A note about Persona 5 Streaming From Atlus

Saying the game just plays once is being really dishonest. It's an 80 hour game, there's many games you could beat many times over and not reach that length. if someone can sit through a whole playthrough of Persona 5 they deserve an award in patience.

It's not dishonest, it's the truth. Watching a stream is a legit substitute to buying and playing the game oneself as opposed to something like FIFA or Overwatch, where streams are of a complementary nature.

I'm sure that would be a key point if there was to be a legal clarification on stiff like this.

Is it really about spoilers though? I think they are just framing it that way because it's really about losing revenue to people who will just watch it rather then buy it and play it.

Yeah. I don't think this actually has anything to do with spoilers. More like they are afraid it would hurt sales( which of course it really wouldn't) and they are using the spoiler thing as an excuse.

If people want it spoiled they will look for it. If they don't want it spoiled, they will avoid streams and videos. Pretty simple.

Oh - that actually makes a lot of sense.

Atlus could ask for no spoilers in the video titles (like people apparently like to do on YouTube and in most cases not with bad intentions, just because they're fucking stupid) and this would solve whatever issue. Why the fuck would I enter a video saying it's after 07/07 if I care about spoilers?

Holy shit I'm mad lol

Guys.

Guys....

GUYS.

Maybe this is their attempt to inadvertently make more people stream the game in order to get more exposure for the game. Maybe they want the opposite effect.

Atlus doing a good job of taking the crown for most backwards video game company in 2017. Good on them for winning an award.

If this doesn't actually hurt their sales in the slightest (or if it actually helps) I wonder how many other companies will think about it. I think it's bizarre and most likely stupid to be antagonistic to streamers in 2017 but the assumption that this hurts sales is kind of just that. This also has nothing to do with spoilers but that's some decent spin I guess

Wow.

How about "I'll do whatever I want with my fucking property that I own"?

Fuck you, Atlus.

If they don't give consent for you to stream it on twitch how is it any different than a tv broadcast, film, etc. I think it's garbage on their part but you don't own the rights to stream it?

As if any twitch streamer is gonna follow this garbage.

They will if people actually get suspended? There isn't a Streisand effect here, folks accounts will get suspended and less people will stream it if that's the road they want to go down.

These people don't exist, or are so small it isn't worth it.

Many games have become as famous as they are thanks to the internet. Atlus is killing any chance of that happening.

Well I wouldn't say they don't exist or are so small, I mean you can't really measure or prove that statement.

For instance I was planning on buying Horizon but I was really busy and didn't have the time to buy it. So I started to watch a stream of it and was really interested in the story so I couldn't stop myself from watching. If there wasn't a stream then i would have been more likely to buy it but now that i have seen the story there really isn't any reason.

Also for story based games its very hard to go out of your way to buy them when you can just watch it online. While your not getting the full personal experience if its a game with choices, it still makes someone less likely to buy it. Its like being able to watch a full movie online rather then going out to see it. I don't really understand why video game media has a different precedent especially when it comes to story games.

it's also funny that they released this now despite western copies having been sold for nearly a week ahead of launch

and yet horizon sold through 2.6 million in two weeks

Boy, they're a bit touchy about spoilers. Comes off as pretentious and tactless.

It's also super annoying that I get a notification from my PS4 every 5 minutes that recording has ceased because I've entered a blocked scene. I'm not even streaming. I suppose I can change the recording settings, right?

Had no plans to watch streams or do streams and won't change my plans to get it and play it.

Buuuuuuut this sounds stupid and really old way of thinking.

It's downright surreal how hard the irony is lost on them.

Or worse, they're completely aware and just don't give a shit.

You have nothing to back this up. Meanwhile there are plenty of games out there that are what the are today thanks to the internet.

See: Undertale, Minecraft, etc.

No game is the second coming of Jesus Christ that the story needs to have this much god damn bull shit surround it to prevent folks from learning about it.

Wake up and smell the coffee. If someone wants to avoid spoilers they will avoid spoilers by not going out to find them. Some people get spoiled no matter what, because the internet is the internet.

However, Twitch is FREE advertisement for a game that can net you 10's of thousands of eyes and get you more sales really quick especially on early release of a title from hype on a good streamer.

Guys are morons.

Arguably, Persona itself is so popular in the west due to the internet. The Endurance Run and word-of-mouth have done tremendous good for the franchise's popularity. Atlus is ripping off their nose to spite their face.

I don't understand feeling the need to protect individuals that actively seek out and watch streams from spoilers.

If they're watching, they probably don't care all that much. I'm not watching specifically because I don't want to be spoiled.

I'm sure releasing the game 7 months early in a different country has caused 10x the amount of spoilers for people looking forward to the game than streaming would have

AtlusJP makes zero sense

Well it depends on the game, you can't say that every game will equally be effected. Of course small indie games and online games with communities benefit a lot from streams. That's why you have departments for those specific studios designed to reach out to streamers and twitch viewers.

I mean I am not defending atlus because I watch streams, I can just understand their reasoning. Also again I have always found it very strange that I can "experience" a game without actually paying any money.

Daily reminder that the P4 Endurance Run by Giant Bomb only sold more copies of P4 than anything else.
As if any twitch streamer is gonna follow this garbage.

I would argue the streamers are the people that are more okay with this anyway. I feel bad for the people who do the LP video format thing.

Don't believe for a second that this is about spoilers.

Amazing - this is worse than it originally seemed.

Should have kept quiet instead 😂

No way in hell is this about spoilers.

Just shows how backwater they are.

Looks like I'll be streaming the fuck out of my playthrough of this game starting tonight. Atlus can fuck off with the content strike threats.

I seriously think they just don't understand the irony of it. Maybe it's just the suit at Atlus that didn't play the game that are making these rules.

Honestly, either is pretty bad. Being out of touch or just not caring.

Persona is one of those games. I cannot tell you how many games I've bought because I saw someone do an LP of it.

The vast majority of people who watch LPs aren't doing it because they don't want to pay for a game.

You are using your personal experiences to project onto the rest of the internet.

Looks like I'll be staying off the internet til I finish the game (once it gets here..)

This is just going to make people want to spoil things.

A lot of this is the company not understanding streamers HELP sales. I never had played a Persona game or really even heard of them until Jeff and Vinny did the Endurance Run of P4. That directly led to me buying P4 Golden and now the Take Your Heart edition of P5.

By letting people watch a Let's Play, you might be losing a tiny number of sales upfront (most of the people who would watch an LP probably weren't going to buy the game anyway) but you're helping to build a larger audience down the road. P5 is a direct beneficiary of that effect from P4, and shutting that down is incredibly shortsighted.
