So how bad is the Switch stock situation?

A friend of mine managed to get a Switch from Toys R Us in Riverside County. She said she was on the mailing list and got an e-mail saying they would get 25 the next morning and it was first come first serve. She arrived early in the morning a few hours before TRU opened up and she was #19 in the line. They were immediately sold out.

I don't see this hype train stopping anytime soon and stock issues, along with hype, are going to continue well into Christmas season and into next year IMO.

I was over in an Irvine Best Buy yesterday and I saw a tower of over 100 switches whittle down to 10 left while I was there in an hour (just window shopping). Seeing this happen right in front of me pretty much confirmed that the Nintendo Switch is not a fly by night thing, this console might be the biggest Nintendo console since the Wii (and the DS).

When Mario Kart 8 is released and especially Splatoon 2, the console will go to beast mode for a long time. Nintendo looks like they have a genuine hit here, at least in the West Coast. The Mobile games and lots of TV/Print marketing tells me that Nintendo really turned their image around.

Cool. Guess this thing should be around a million by now right? In the US I mean.

if they hit 3m shipped worldwide, it would have to be. japan's around 500k and europe is somewhere in the middle. expected shipments are around 2-2.5m though. on the low end, it probably means about 600k-750k. at the high end, it's 800k-1m.

it's still early, but this was what i was noticing in the leadup to the reveal. the october reveal video was also largely positive. not even the lackluster january conference could dampen enthusiasm - the next day, switches were sold out and people reporting from the new york event were extremely positive about the machine.

and that's the main thing - the switch itself is a good piece of hardware. it's a simple idea executed really well, with a lot of little bells and whistles to make all kinds of unique experiences as well. library isn't an issue since it will grow. price isn't an issue because it will come down. people like the system and that's a huge reason it's performing well. and this isn't lost on companies either. the western people may never latch onto it, but for japan, this has the potential to be the next 3ds/ps2/psp/ds.

A buddy of mine was able to find one for his family this evening at Target in Hoover, Alabama. Gray Joy-Cons with Zelda and Just Dance. He said he went in for plumber's tape, and $420 later...

Check istocknow's live map if you want to see Target availability. They blocked the normal inventory counts but istocknow still picks them up somehow. Nearby stores still have a ton. They are probably locked in the cabinet so ask an employee if you don't see any in the case.

Let us know how fast those 120 take to sell. Will be interesting if this weekend's restock goes fast.

Edit: how many of those sold today?

Don't have an exact per day number, but they completely sold out today as soon as the store opened. 25 more units show up as in transit as well, so at least Nintendo is trying to keep up with demand.

I hope so, I have many friends who are buying the switch in the hopes that it becomes a huge center of Japanese gaming development. While I currently don't have one myself, seeing that shift in development would make me buy one in the near future.

120 sold out on a Monday morning in April. This thing is huge.

Yeah, I think everyone is slowly starting to realize what is happening with the switch phenomenon.

So the consensus is it's getting lots of restocks but they are quickly selling out? Hope this leads to a lot of Third Parties green lighting Switch projects.

will there be random lines at gamestops/targets for the rest of the year?

At some point relatively soon supply will mostly catch up with demand, but I bet we will continue to see lines and sell outs around the time of major releases. I think we will see stock issues continue for much of May thanks to Mario Kart. But if you don't have a Switch by the time Odyssey comes out (and maybe earlier depending on what releases in September/October), then you may have to be prepared to do some camping out if you want one before 2018.

There probably will be anyway given the trickle of releases from Nintendo are nearly monthly. Zelda hype has lasted long enough for there now to be Mario Kart hype. The Direct tomorrow and the following months of games like ARMS and Splatoon will just continue the hype-engine and before you know it Holiday craze will be in effect and BAM Wii level of insanity reached.

I must live in a bubble. I don't know anyone who owns a Switch and none of my students talk about it. They're still on and on about Call of Duty and Minecraft. That's the Midwest for you I guess. I've seen a few in stock at random Targets in town.

Wow... the midwest sucks. I have seen switches everywhere and I am in a pretty crappy state.

I got lucky when amazon had them in stock. I just still can't wrap my head around people lining up at gamestop just because they might get a shipment in. its crazy

One of the walmarts on Brickseek near me has -1 in stock. MoFos are OWED a switch.

I've been periodically checking the stock even though I nabbed mine from a 3-unit restock a few weeks ago. I'm just curious how long before steady stock is available, and around this metropolitan, it looks like not soon.

Went to my local Bestbuy this morning and they actually still had 3 left, though they were sold by the time I left. They even had some pro controllers. Though sadly no extra left Joycons, though they had tons of double packs and right joycons >_>

Nintendo is pushing it hard. Tons of ads before every movie I've seen since the Switch launched.

Great exposure to a wide range of audiencessl. I've seen multiple adds before; Boss Baby, Kong Island, John Wick, Going in Style, La La Land, Ghost in Shell, Logan ect...

Really diverse audiences and great exposure.

I think that means someone returned a defective unit.

Or at the very least, has terrible taste in video games. CoD and MineCraft? BARF.

I haven't seen any Switch consoles in the wild around here (seacoast area New Hampshire), but the local Best Buy and Walmart seem to always have at least a few sets of gray Joy-Cons. The last time I was at Best Buy - to pick up LEGO City Undercover - they had four charging grips and one Pro Controller. I think I've seen a set of red & blue Joy-Cons *once* at Walmart since launch.

What's awesome is that since we are getting close to Mario kart and seeing stock and Zelda hype continue to be hard th and go through Switch may be able to handle itself for the next few months(wih Arms and Splatoon 2 coming soon)

My thoughts exactly. Nintendo said it would be up to them to entice customers to "come back" to the Nintendo brand ie: make it a popular piece of hardware the water cooler talk is all about.

It seems like they've done it. I love it. I've got BomberMan R, Zelda:BOTW and 1, 2 Switch all on cartridge. Then I have Lego City Undercover, Snipperclips, Fast RMX, Shovel Knight Treasure Trove, Metal Slug, Metal Slug 3, Snake Pass, No More Heroes and Graceful Explosion Machine all digital.

I love my indies and make sure I support quality indie titles, especially if they develop for Switch(and means a double dip for me if I already have it on PC).

E3 I think most of us(at least I am) are looking for more "solid" commitments from the bigger third party companies. We know Ubisoft is already on board(Assassin's Creed please!), Take 2 is supposedly porting Mafia 3 and LA Noir, EA has FIFA Soccer but I expect to hear or see more support/games from them. Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 1 and 2, Unravel and Mirror's Edge would be good port candidates imo(I'd love to see a Battlefield game on Switch. Perhaps a remake of the original Battlefield 1942?), Take Two/Rockstar the rumored Red Dead Redemption re-make and part 2 would be killer scores for Nintendo. And contrary to what Randy Pitchford was talking about, hope to see Take 2 release some form of Borderlands I.P. on the system(heck, the Vita version of Borderlands was great!). Or even the recent Duke Nukem 3D: World Tour would be a nice fit.

So as long as Nintendo keeps moving systems and it's a huge hit(it seems to be heading that way), you *don't* want to be the company who isn't supporting the system imo.

If you're in South Jersey looking for a gray Switch. Best Buy (Deptford) had at least 7 in-stock when I was there earlier.

I have never seen one in stock in Pittsburgh. Not that I've been looking incredibly hard, but I find myself walking through a lot of Targets, Best Buys etc. and the display cases are always completely empty.

McKnight Rd Best Buy is the only place I've seen them in DA BURGH. It was just 3 consoles though and they were in the Online Pickup area (not being held for anyone though, they were available for purchase).

Got mine off Amazon a few weeks ago.

So I have the opportunity for $300 in Amazon credit or Gamestop credit. Which one should I take if I want to buy the Switch as soon as possible? Neither seem to be getting restocks as often as TRU and Best Buy.

My friend got his Switch for friend in China situation fixed on this restock wave, from him I can at least state that most of northern chicagoland where he went has been stripped clean again.

He's going to be looking for one for himself when he gets back in a few weeks.

I would set up a nowinstock alert for amazon. Gamestop gets like 1-2 units in a shipment at most because they are a tiny store with a tiny overall allotment.

For Canadians on the prowl... Amazon.ca seems to have some stock in.

I don't see this hype train stopping anytime soon and stock issues, along with hype, are going to continue well into Christmas season and into next year IMO.

We will see... but it sorta sounds like Nintendo is making a push to stock shelves and reports of sightings in the wild are increasing. I don't see how Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2, and Arms are going to carry the hype for long (nor do I see those games selling ungodly amounts of units). I think Nintendo needs to have a very big E3 in order for what you are saying to come true. Otherwise, I think stable stock will be a thing in a month or so (which is a good thing).

Think you may be surprised at what Mario Kart could do for the Switch.

Just a feeling but I think when people are taking there portable Switch and playing against a mate it's just going to have a domino effect and push sales.

Or I'm completely wrong! (probably this...)

I don't think Kart will support download play, it's too big for that, but yeah in general if two friends are playing Mario Kart, you will want to get IN.

So US Amazon hasn't had stock for at least 2 weeks now and Target doesn't even list the grey version on their website. Seems odd given people have been listing so many places getting units in.

I have tons of Amazon gift cards, so I am waiting for plentiful stock. I can wait, whether now or 12 months from now.

Give him the money so he can pick one up over here. Fairly easy to get one in Europe if your looking hard enough

Retailers aren't getting much stock. I can't recall any recent game system launch which had this small shipments after launch. Unless we count the Nintendo Classic Mini.
