Mr. Shifty |OT| Shift Happens

BTW the CEO has responded:

https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSw...y_mr_shifty_look_at_how_the_devs_are/dg8556e/

"I'm working with the team to get a patch submission done either tomorrow (Friday) or on Monday."

1 claim I am willing to say is a straight up lie:

1) He has played 80 hours of Zelda and hasn't "seen any issues." Whether in docked or handheld mode, I legitimately do not think anyone could play 80 hours of BOTW and not have any framerate issues whether it's in the major dense areas or from knocking enemies off cliffs/high heights.

Concerning Shifty, he says he couldn't get the game to drop below 25fps which might be true, but the game does have framerate issues (and I don't think its a 'happening to some users only' kind of issue) and seemingly even more so in the latter half of the game.

Sounds like some wishy-washy PR talk.

I'll say it again - Don't trust Tinybuild's lies.

They're horrible. Cluster Truck launched on consoles without the option to Invert Y. People on Twitter asked them if they'd patch it in, and they basically said it was too much effort. Then, they patched the boss on PC because it was stupid, and they didn't patch that on consoles either. Then the extra Halloween content came out and they didn't patch it. They seemed to make sure they didn't specifically say where it was coming to, too, and didn't answer any questions about if it was coming to consoles.

Months later someone asked if the status of the patch and they said they thought it was already patched. It's definitely not patched in Non-US locations and they don't give a shit and just don't respond.

They may talk nice now, but they've been super flip and uncaring in the past.
This is discouraging to hear, but they have now promised a patch submission by next week. That's a solid timeframe. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until then.

Let's see if they can fix this.

Saw a really interesting Aussie doco called Play to Win a few months ago on the making of the fruit ninja games, and the teams attempts to try and recreate that success. Amongst all of that, a couple of their most talented devs got disillusioned with the direction of the company (churning out f2p stuff) and split off to make games that they wanted to make.

The result was this game. It looked and sounded really sweet at the time and I made a mental note to check it out, if for no other reason then to support the people behind it. A little sad to see it has a few issues, and hasn't received the best reception

If the framerate issues are as bad as this thread suggests, then I think I've made a terrible mistake. 👀

There are moments of slowdown but - in my time with the game - I never had it negatively impact my enjoyment with it. Hopefully the patch in the works remedies the frame rate problems because the game is damn fun.

It figures that the one game in years I just randomly buy on a whim and don't research beforehand would end up being a mess.

A part of it is that Nintendo loyalists, especially after the past few years, have seen some shit. This makes the fanbase prone to extremes; if a game is setting an example they feel other developers and publishers should follow, they will champion it like no other console userbase. Fast RMX, Snake Pass, Graceful Explosion Machine (the devs confirmed today that sales are exceeding expectations) are just some examples.

On the other hand, if that same fanbase feels exploited or disrespected the outrage is swift and intense. The response to the RiME pricing is one example. And here, I think a lot of the negativity is down to how the developers initially addressed the complaints. Framerate can be forgiven, but blaming it on the hardware and deflecting onto the sacred cow that is Zelda were just not good moves.

I remain confident that they meant no offense, but this is why PR is so important and often hard to get right.

If they actually do it it probably means it doesn't cost anything to patch Switch titles, or they believe that it'll be worth it for those Starved Early Adopter Dollars, because they've literally given no crops in the past.

So, is this game good? I need something new on my Switch.

Have you played Hotline Miami? Do you like arcade like games that can be picked up for a few minutes?

It is a clone of Hotline Miami that is more simple. I enjoy the game but the slow downs can be a drag, After playing for 4 hours yesterday I got used to them but honestly we should not have to get used to something that should not be there in the first place.

I like the game and think it is worth $15 for the Switch.

Thanks!

Does ist have replay value? Like highscores or secrets?

Unless you're really, really good at the game or keep it permanently paused on your Switch/PC, you're not going to make much progress if you can only play for a few minutes at a time, sadly.

(yes, I think the lack of mid-level saving both HM and here is bullshit, sorry)

You are correct it is bullshit. I won't disagree with that. But the game is still fun and I look at it as stages anyways.

Game just crashed a second time towards the end of stage 15... So frustrated but I still enjoy it.

Same, in the very begin big it had a frantic frame drop happen to me twice, after that itbhadent really been all that bad, been playing 100% in handheld mode so far

The slowdowns do not bother me as much as the crashes. Almost 20 minutes trying to beat one of the final areas and the game crashes for the fourth time on me, making me replay the whole stage.

sigh...

Similar thing just happened to me on the Switch. Crashed on what I assume is the final sequence of the last level, or at least very close to it. Thanks to the lack of in-level saves it cost me about 40 minutes of difficult, finicky, slogging progress that I do not care to make up again.

Unlike you, the slowdowns do very much bug me. I'm sure the developers tried their best to maintain performance but the slowdowns and hitches are actually insulting to me as a player and consumer. Blighttown on the 360 was the last time I felt utterly disregarded by a developer in this way but this situation is actually worse and doubly so due to the unforgiving nature of the game. That I put up with such unacceptable performance for so long is a testament to how incredibly fun the game can be but continuing to play it in its current state would be unadulterated masochism as far as I'm concerned.

It's a shame because even with the problems I think I like it more than Hotline Miami.

I'm super interested in this game and could easily play this on my PC w/ my 980Ti, but I'd really rather play something like this on my Switch and it doesn't sound like performance is too hot. So I'll wait and see what pans out. If they can give me solid performance on the Switch(60fps) I'll pick it up sooner than later, if not, I can wait for a Steam sale and just play it on PC whenever I get the time.

So the Switch version has some frame rate issues that get pretty bad at points. I figured the devs would just eventually patch this. Then I read this in Polygon.

Polygon said:
When that same user reiterated that Mr. Shifty’s frequent stutters was disappointing, the studio instead pointed them toward the more stable Windows PC version.

I get that they're a small team but that's definitely disappointing.

Had this on my Steam Wishlist, but I might just remove it. If I get it in a Humble Bundle one day that's fine, but I don't see myself buying it.

I was really looking forward to this game. Looks like I'll be waiting for the patch. Nothing more frustrating than lost progress...

I've just finished it on the Switch and the performance takes A LOT of hits on the last stage. It took me 3h24min to finish it. I don't think I will play it again anytime soon and maybe US$10 would be a better price for what it offers.

I wish the game offered more incentive to play again. Beating your time/death total isn't a compelling reason to replay the game.

Just finished the game. Really really enjoyed it apart from the obvious performance issues and the really pointless narrative. The barebones narrative being exacerbated by the awful dialogue (Nyx being the worst).

The core mechanics is really fun and the way the game kept adding new enemy types was nice.

Game is fun and probably worth the small entry fee, 0 replay-ability though but hopefully it continues to be supported in some aspect instead of being dropped immediately after launch.

Switch patch coming this week?

What the CEO is saying that implies some switch units have problems that are causing the framerate drops sounds very suspicious to me.

The only thing I can think of that could be causing differences is possibly some people have it installed on microSD vs the internal storage, and even then I don't think that should matter?

Also physics tied to framerate sounds ridiculous. With those graphics framerate shouldn't even be an issue.

The game is definitely enjoable even with frame drops, but they did a really bad job with communications after the release.

Hope the patch will improve the performance, because is a really fun game IMHO.

Had a bug yesterday. Took the Switch out of Rest mode and the game was unplayable, it was running at a sub 10 frame rate. Closed the application, started it again and it was solved.
That had never happen to me with Zelda or Fast RMX.

The game is frustrating near the end stages. It's still a worthy purchase if they indeed patch it.

But I tell you what, the responses by the devs on Twitter turned me off from ever supporting them again. You can't take a shit on your consumers like that.

So I finished the game yesterday at 4:38.

I really enjoyed it, the frame rate hits we insane at later levels, by never made me mess up, so I didn't turn me off. However, I experienced two crashes, one being the last level, and I feel that is unacceptable. I know things happen, but crashes are a big no no. Add that to the lack of mid level saves add it's quite the blow.

Which is too bad, because the have us really fun, so much fun, that despite my annoyances with the crashes, I went right back in.

Smaller companies who are going to make themselves visible to the public should have someone take a class in PR. It seems like people feel attacked when patrons bring up issues with their game and give defensive, deflecting responses. No one is asking them for a perfect game, just if it can be a bit better than it currently is.

I finished it after 2:47 hours. It's a really fun game and I would gladly play more, but biggest problem is that there are really few contents.

There is no score system, no collectibles and no modes outside the main quest, so after you finish the last level you have nothing more to do.

I would suggest to devs to add an "Arena mode" with online ranking, a score system to help replayability and improve framerate. The game also would works great with only one joycon, so a coop mode or a versus mode would be awesome.

But first of all, they have to improve the framerate. 30fps would be fine and some drops would be acceptable, but there's a lot of stutter and in last levels framerate drop really low sometimes.

Has this been patched for the Switch yet? I really want to try it out but the negative impressions have me hesitant. I can deal with bit of framerate issues unless it's truly game breaking.

This is the Nintendo fanbase in a nutshell, for best and worse heh. Wii U really did a number on some imo.

On topic: Sucks to hear about the performance. After seeing one random Switch vs PC comparison video, I thought it was just 60 fps vs 30 fps. I'm still interested in this so when the patch drops I may pull the trigger. Good luck TinyBuild!
