Also, reminder to everyone that this didn't even got an Oscar nomination for best animated film.
Was it eligible for the 2016 awards? Spirited Away won in Feb 2003, for the 2002 year, despite the fact that it came out in Summer 2001 in Japan.

It was submitted for a nomination but it wasn't in the top picks. Was it eligible for the 2016 awards? Spirited Away won in Feb 2003, for the 2002 year, despite the fact that it came out in Summer 2001 in Japan.
Good post, totally agree!Just got back. It's an amazing experience seeing in a full theatre.
Mightily impressed with the film. The way that they decided to make the characters emotionally connect with each other was done miles better than any attempt at a body-swap romance that I've seen before. It didn't even matter that certain plot devices were convenient or weird, because the emotional momentum of the story elevated it from being a basic fantasy story into something truly special.
The visual storytelling is breathtaking, and not just from a surface-level aesthetics. The film wouldn't have been this emotionally powerful had it not been directed with such care about the feelings of its characters. You really empathize with the wonder, affection, and vague longing that they feel because of the very personal "camerawork." This is Shinkai at the top of his craft.
I want the Blu-ray now!!!!
The movie having an anime opening with the song threw me off. Ive seen opening sequences in anime films where they do a main theme but not like that. Just felt really strange.
Hopefully this year then. Loved it.Was it eligible for the 2016 awards? Spirited Away won in Feb 2003, for the 2002 year, despite the fact that it came out in Summer 2001 in Japan.
Saw this tonight. Japanese with subtitles. Really liked it. The "twist" was great (before that the movie wasn't super interesting), even though I saw it coming.
Which twist. The movie has a number of them lol
They were not, but the English versions of the songs were performed by the same artist.Hopefully this year then. Loved it.
Saw the dub which was solid. Were the songs originally in English?
The nearest theater showing it is 9 miles away and has a showing at 1:30 and 10:15. Guess I'll wait till the Blu Ray.
Funimation needs to do a better job getting theatres on board in greater Houston.

You won't drive 9 miles?
I have by now watched both the dubbed and subbed versions in theaters. Yay LA.
I vastly prefer the dub script to the subtitles, that latter of which fell into some of my pet-peeves about subtitle writing like explaining feminine pronouns in parentheses. Felt amateurish compared to the localization job they did for the dub cast.
They did a phenomenal job of having Taki act feminine when Mitsuha was in control.
Well, watched it a 3rd time today.
Caught it in the morning, so it wasn't that much.
Was trying to get a Japanese showing, but Google never specified, and I couldn't get a hold of the theater over the phone. By the time I got there, I saw it was only the English at the time I had.
Guess I gotta watch it a 4th time.

Traffic's not even bad on Saturday.
There's some CG in the character animation as well. It's getting better I suppose, but I just jumps out at you.I saw it like the day after it opened and thought it was really good. The environments were gorgeous but I felt there were some shots where things were digitally parallaxed that kind of took me out of the scene. That's just something I tend to notice a lot though. It bugged me a bit in Kubo and the Two Strings too.
Hmm, I guess I should catch the dubbed version as well.I have by now watched both the dubbed and subbed versions in theaters. Yay LA.

Think this will end up becoming one of my favorite new movies. What an emotional rollercoaster.
Here in Sweden it received a limited theatrical run with only a Swedish dub. I have to admit this dub was really good.
I still think The Garden of Words and Voices of a Distant Star are better than this film, so there's that. Finally caught this today (english dub). Pretty incredible watch. As someone who hasn't dove much into anime in the past, what are some recommendations for other films like this one?
How did they translate the joke aboutMitsuha in Taki's body slipping up and using atashi or watashi or whatever it was to refer to herself, in the dub version? I saw the subbed version and wondered how the heck they dealt with that one.

Yeah, listening to the soundtrack is just feels turned up to 11. I think I should get the English version at some point too.I saw it again today with some other friends. Two or three of them cried. I even teared up a bit. I bought the soundtrack and damn is it satisfying in my VMODAs.
I need this on blu-ray ASAP,

I haven't seen many feature-length anime films, would this be hard to get into for an uncultured swine like myself? I really like high concept stuff and the buzz around this film has been crazy online. My local theater is showing it subtitled and am thinking about taking the plunge.
