Kotaku: How To Fake Your Way Through Conversations About The Hottest Video Games

Sorry if old.

Overwatch

What it is: A team-based competitive game where players control cartoony heroes, all of whom shoot each other with outlandish weapons.

What they’ll talk about: The way Blizzard has tweaked the balance, which usually draws complaints. Whatever new hero has been unveiled, usually in a splashy animated short.

Uncontroversial Statements:

“They keep buffing and nerfing Dva and I can’t keep up!”

“I stay away from competitive play these days. Too much salt.”

“I just wish people would stay on the payload!”

“All I know is, Hanzo is the worst!”

“All I know is, Genji is the worst!”

“I’ve seen some really good Overwatch cosplay over the last year. The work these people put in! Amazing.”

Don’t bring up: Anything related to how attractive you think a character is, or with whom you think they should be sleeping.

Eject button: Say that you played Overwatch a whole bunch last year, but don’t really anymore. Too many changes to the meta.

A good reference guide for Gaffers

Why would anyone ever want to fake that? Seriously, I can't envision a scenario where someone would need to do this.

I'll tell you something about e-sports though, something that i think applies to overwatch as well, is that, if you think about it, most of the time, usually the player who makes the most points is the winner, and that means they're probably the best player

People who want to be seen as "cool" because video games are a thing. It's sad, but I do know people like this; I was having a conversation with a friend once when Portal 2 came out (we were talking about meeting online for co-op) and someone came up to us, said "Portal? Yeah, the cake is a lie, man" and then tried to convince us that they'd played it. If only there had been some sort of cheat sheet/reference guide for them back then...

That's just stupid.

I'm not going to talk about anything I don't really give a fuck about even if it's video game related

You'd be shocked at the amount of people that do this bullshit, and it's not just with games either.

Not that it makes sense, but I think it's because they want to act like they are part of something or know what they are talking about.

You never been or seen anyone accosted by fans of a tv show when you say you're not watching it? Or had to deal with an annoying cashier at gamestop? Some people prefer to have those type of conversations ended in the fastest and least socially awkward way possible. I imagine some people would like to show some interest in others' hobbies as well if they're trying to get to know someone.

The BotW weapon degradation is a perfect recent example. Jump into the OT and talk about how you don't like it. It's like throwing gasoline on a fire.

What it is
Click baity trash journalism about video games and popular culture (nerd stuff).

Uncontroversial statements
"jason schreier is the only good thing about them"

"Are they not banned on GAF yet?"

"They're not as bad as Polygon"

Don't bring up
Hulk Hogan sex tape and being black balled by publishers.

Eject Button
Tell people you haven't read their latest breaking news because you read it first on GAF last week.

maybe i follow the wrong people on Twitter but isn't this like half of Overwatch's appeal right here

also y'all need to lighten up. it's a comedic article.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
I enjoyed it, particularly because I've only played Overwatch and Dark Souls out of all those games and yet I feel intimately familiar with all the faux talking points.

You've really never experienced a situtation where a bunch of people around you are talking about Hot Topic X you have no experience with and had to just nod along?

I mean, it's a joke, but it's not exactly hard to see what what they were going for, it's a pretty common scenario that's the subject of a lot of similar jokes like the oft quoted IT Crowd picture in here.

As long as no one does this in real life. So much cringe by those that fake knowing about things in a conversation.

I don't understand this reaction to the article at all.
It's a small little comedy piece. Not meant to be taken seriously at all. Why all the super negativity? Didn't we just have a thread about being nice to one another?

I thought the whole reason people read GAF was so we could fake our way through conversations about games we never played.

Just me?

Yep. Yep. They're definitely encouraging this and clearly not just making a quick humor article.

That's cool, but they can't then turn around and ask people to take their next article about gender issues or violence in video games seriously. Nothing wrong with being a parody site like the Onion, but you can't have it both ways.
