Best Ninja Games

Mark of the Ninja is fantastic.

I'd like to also mention the N series, which I'm going to count, dammit.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Ninja Gaiden Black, Shinobi III, and Shinobi PS2 are my top 3.

Mark of the Ninja is the best western-developed ninja game, but it's like... a 7/10 sorta game.

This game never gets any love but Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword game on DS is great and its cheap.

Glad to see someone mentioned this already. The game is legit and people usually don't care about it.

It's also the direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden Black.

Raikoh is a samurai, not a Ninja. But I agree that Otogi games are awesome. Sad that they are not backwards compatible on 360.

As for stealth games I guess Aragami counts? Edit: Beaten on this one.

Also, if you're looking for something different, you can be a ninja in Bethesda's Fallouts and Elder Scrolls.

In Skyrim, I roleplayed as a Riddick wood elf w/ hair. Instead of carrying daggers, he would summon them.

It was imperfect because, even if you had silent casting, attacking with summoned weapons, even while sneaking, made noise. It gets a bit stupid tho when you no one can see you point blank and you're rolling around like a hedgehog to get everywhere.

But the point is that they can be perfectly serviceable ninja sims with the typical breadth of content a Bethesda game offers.

On that note, the Riddick games are basically ninja games compared to stuff like Splinter Cell or MGS. You can get them on GoG or Amazon in the Dark Athena package.

Ninja Gaiden
Mark of the Ninja
MGS: Integral/VR Missions
Batman Arkham games

In particular, Mark of the Ninja is incredible. A must play from last gen.

Shinobido 2 for the Vita is esssentially Tenchu on the go. Multiple endings, literally endless missions, 14 mission types, two playable characters, incredibly robust and deep alchemy system, it's wonderful. The only thing it's missing is a mission creator. And the best part is that it's completely portable

Edit - those saying otogi aren't wrong, but I view Raikoh and supporting cast more as samurais than ninjas, but they are phenomenal games that deserve more love

Sadly, pretty sure Riddick was pulled from GoG last year due to Atari shenanigans ;-;

One of my favorite little ninja games is a decade-old Japanese freeware stealth platformer called Nikujin. Lots of great 2D stealth killing, wall-running, and boss fighting packed into a small handful of easily replayable, well-designed levels. Seeing the thread title got me to replay it now for the first time in years, and while there's a little bit of jank, it remains really satisfying.

Developer Ikiki's site is now pretty much nothing but 404 errors, so it's tough to find a way to download it nowadays. I've been able to carry the 1 MB .zip between a few different computers, but if there's a currently working link (or a way I could upload it somewhere stable), that'd be swell.

Ninja Gaiden 2 (and Black following closely behind) is probably my favorite. Amazing combat.

Though Shinobi PS2 definitely deserves a special mention. It's a perfect mix of platforming and action with a good sense of pace and urgency. It feels more 'ninja'-y.

Aragami is a good stealth game, but you don't really have ninja movement or crazy techniques.

Tenchu 1 is really good but difficult to deal with, having tank controls and PS1 draw distance.
Tenchu 3 I just really like. Tons of guard layouts, and even the very linear levels let you work through each section in a variety of ways. Fatal Shadows is good too but can be frustrating due to the enemies automatically turning to face you at points in their patrols, which is just the worst kind of cheating stealth AI.

Wish I could play Shinobido 2. First one had some really good ideas but the levels were often too empty or too crowded, and not enough variety.

Ninja Blade is decent... it's like the only option on PC beside Mark too.

edit: I guess Revengeance counts as a ninja game. It's pretty good.

Definitely chiming in on the Mark of the Ninja and Nioh (if you decide to build your character as a Ninja). Strider 2014 is pretty good too.

Also I would love some Ninja Gaiden remasters/hd remakes on the PS4/PC/XB1.

Ninja Gaiden is literally the very definition of this thread.

Nothing else comes close.

Now if Tecmo/Team Ninja did a sequel where the game was mission based, and building a town. While you could raid villages using stealth and still retain the great combat (with improved bow and arrow) then that would beat it out... Just.
