show me the absolute WORST character design you can think of

Man I don't think you guys are diving deep enough. I don't know where to find better pics but Omikron has to trump most anything posted in this thread with half its characters.

I just don't bother participating in these, but I seriously don't get what's so bad about the Sonic Boom interpretations, separate your thoughts of them from the game, they all look fine. They come from the fighting game school of character design where the most important traits of the characters are made clear from the design immediately.
Knuckles - he's big and strong, he exists to punch things
Tails - he's the fucking mechanic, he makes gadgets and does the plane. This interpretation is way better than any other interpretation of him in the series, besides maybe the OVA where he has the aviator helmet, which fits him well.
Amy - actually improving upon her by making her have a proper battle outfit, her hammer is always featured
Sonic is the only one it doesn't matter for because he literally just speaks for himself. He was changed merely to fit with the others, and not a single part of it is offensive

also "What The forest Taught Me" you know you can quote multiple things at once? no need for 3 in a row posts.

Japanese female character design: the thread. If most Japanese devs would try designing their females as actual people instead of fuck toys to be stared at by pervs their designs would be more likeable and relatable. Ironically I think Terra from FFVI is probably my most beloved female character design of all time, tasteful and beautiful with an underlying sense of tragedy and sadness chased with divine power to her, but it just seems like Japanese female character design has regressed heavily since the 90's.

Well said!

I think you are letting your dislike of the game cloud your judgement. Regardless of what you think of the game, new Dante could not possibly be described as horrible. You might not find it exciting, but it's not horrible.

I do wonder if the reason the design gets so much hate is because it's basically the only male character I can think of designed to look hot and sexy for women / gay guys.
Lolwut? Dante has always had a large female/gay following. That's literally the stated reason he has an open coat and no shirt in DMC3 and that there is the ability to take his coat of.

New Dante is a self insert of the character designer.

Maybe not THE worst, but the Garlean commanders in FFXIV:

latest

Overdesigned, especially the helmets. Take note of the monstrosity on the left. His weapons are two giant shields with guns on them....guns that point downward.

Ah yes, New Dante, the Dante designed to appeal to gay men... Coming from the devs who mocked the original design by implying it looked gay, which in their very mature minds equals to something bad

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is a solid "Persona-ripoff" JRPG. The cel-shaded graphics look cool and the Digimon designs are fine.

The character designs, though:

Here we have the main character, a textbook example in character design. He has goggles(?), but never wears them. Dual fanny packs. A glove on one hand. And belts, that just are. Wow. On the right is the female version, which appears as though they literally took the male MC, changed the hair, and forced in boobs. Poor girl looks like she'll be going through an awkward puberty for the rest of her life.

Now let's look at some support characters. The guy on the left is a "hacker", which apparently means he wears a blue onesie under a hood. The woman is essentially your guardian. Her shirt is unbuttoned because...?

I will end with this man, who, yes, is also a main plot character. There are even more designs, but I think by now my point has been thoroughly made.

Pile bunkers are a thing. Not necessarily a smart thing, but not a dumber thing than other fantasy weaponry.

So progressive. Old Dante from 1-4 was way more attractive anyway (2 has the best design despite the worst game) so even if they were going for that they failed. The new Dante is so unsettlingly greasy looking.

I've got this one.

Horace from his series of ZX Spectrum games.

I can understand the in-game character being bad, as 8-bit computers were pretty limited, but that's the packaging art.

Lol is post #45 a spoiler for the new game? I haven't played either but it's a prickish move it isn't common knowledge.

If it is common knowledge, I'll take the L.

Papa Nier?

He's on the boxart of the first game.
I guess I thought it inferred his relation to Automata's protags. Didn't realize that was his name/title(?) in the original. I'll hang my head in shame.

And again, this is my ignorance not knowing if any of this is common knowledge.

Tales of Berseria was my first Tales game and honestly, part of the reason I dropped it partway through was because I just couldn't take the protagonist seriously with that outfit. By the time I realized I could change to her Villager clothes, I had already stopped caring about Velvet and her story.

Depending on which version of Nier you got, the protagonist was either that guy you saw, or a much younger anime pretty boy. His relationship with one of the principal characters also changes, so people use that as a way specify which one they're talking about: either Father (or Papa) Nier, or Brother Nier.

Papa nier is his nickname because the game launched two versions. One in Japan, one in the west. In Japan the character was the sort of typical young JRPG hero, while in the west he was a few decades older and uglier. It changes the game's main relationship from siblings to parent and child as well.

Ooooooooh. Guess I should play these games.

Now I know what you're thinking "Spyder, mah boi, are you out of your mind?" But rest assure you reader, I think Zero Suit Samus sucks as a design. There's nothing there. All she is is an attractive blonde girl in a skin tight jump suit and that's my type don't get me wrong but considering this is the premiere kick-ass female in video games, I expect something else to give up that vibe, not a copy paste of a Dead or Alive character. It's bad for what it represents; a kick-ass female character, now sexualized to hell and back by her fans, and her creators. Keep her in the suit, preferably the Fusion Suit, that shit's awesome.

I wish they would have stuck to the more realistic design they used in Prime 1.

Yeah cause "A fantasy based on reality " means they have to wear something like Tidus's outfit or Kuja's? It's supposed to be realistic and practical.

I didn't say that they had to look like Tidus or Kuja... That is a blatant strawman. However, since you mentioned them, I will say that I only think their designs are marginally better. As I said before, I think they are painfully bland. I am happy they work for you, they don't work at all for me. They could have done SO MUCH MORE with the theme of "realistic and practical". As is, they landed more on the side of unremarkable and boring.

That'd be an unfortunately large number of designers in Japan.

That was the first design I can recall encountering that made me feel genuinely uncomfortable. I have seen a lot of character designs that have made me roll my eyes, but that is the only one that made me uneasy. It just seems pretty messed up to design a child to just barely have their breasts and their vagina concealed... So very, very wrong.

i think her zero suit juxtaposes her normal chozo battlesuit aesthetic really nicely. not only is she a stoic, immovable bad ass that can do anything, but shes a hot babe, too. shes like the female version of superman; that strong, attractive, awesome power fantasy kinda ideal figure. you also get to see how nimble she really is

its easy to abuse, i.e. other M, but i think its neat overall

These are all from different games. They look like FFX NPCs. Everyone is completely overdesigned, and it lacks any sense of artistic or thematic cohesion. I can't tell anything about the characters or the world they inhabit. Compare this to something like Final Fantasy VII, a game where you instantly get a sense of the character's personality and the atmosphere of the world simply from their designs. Even something like FFXV, a game often criticized for its artistic direction, still manages to convey a sense of the game's setting and atmosphere. These pictures are just visual gibberish. The faded color palette does it no favors either.
