Persona 5 Social-Link/Confidant discussion |OT| Laughing Banana is Makoto's husbando

This will be an unpopular opinion, but for Persona 6, I'd like to see Atlus do away with the whole avatar/blank-slate style of protagonist and allow me to play as a full-fledged character who's love interest is dictated by the narrative. Then I could play as someone who actually feels like a leader. And on top of that, members of the supporting cast could see a piece of the action too. After all, romantic subplots can't occur when the main character has his pick of the litter (*cough*Knaji and Naoto*cough*). Would make for a more interesting group dynamic by and large I think.

But like I said... unpopular. That kind of shake up in formula would go down like a lead balloon with most of the fanbase.

I hope it's not an unpopular opinion because this is what Atlus needs to do to push the series forward in a big way.

Having the MC be an actual character would drastically make every single confidant relationship better. Those relationships would stop being one-way streets and start being an actual two-person relationship.

Right now, almost every confidant has the confidant just use the MC as an exposition-dumping ground or a place to bounce ideas off of. It's a one-way street that's very one-dimensional.

I can't pick my wife? Are you out of your goddamn mind? I do love the idea of other party members getting together though. Like come on you can't all wanna be JUST friends. I always get the urge to push Ryuji and Ann's faces together.

Actually this reminds me of a cool thing in Harvest Moon where if you don't make moves on girl x, guy y* will eventually. Then you can still give your character the time to try and woo Naoto whilst crushing Kanji's heart.

*Except one guy who you could save or leave him to die, ensuring one of the girls remains forever alone.

I think we can meet half way between blank self insert and full character with all decisions decided for him. The mass effect model is what atlus should go with for Persona 6. Static last name so everyone can talk to him in voiced scenes (wouldn't even feel out of place with the Japanese setting), voiced dialogue options, dialogue so that it's not just one character monologuing at or talking for the leader, and romance is separate from social links that the player is able to choose as part of the story near the end (I know andromeda changed this).

The last name thing would actually work, considering it's more common to refer to someone in Japan by their family name unless you are particularly close. And yeah the Mass Effect model is absolutely what I was hoping to see in P5, so maybe the dream will actually come true in P6.

Well this is awkward...

I'm near endgame and I changed my mind.

Haru is definitively the best 'waifu'/girl or whatever and overall best romanceable character. Haru, I'd totally take you to the Ferris Wheel over Makoto and Ann.

Haven't finished the link, I'm only partway thtough. But they are a much cuter couple than the current headcanon. She laughs at all your shitty jokes, for christsakes! And she's interested in coffee!!! She'd make a better 'Mom' for Futaba.

This is some bizzaro land where Makoto is the Superficial choice in my opinion and Haru is the more loveable character.

I hope I have enough time left to max her SL.

Sums up my feelings exactly - how late did you start her? I started her link at 11/3 with no Chihaya boost available and was able to complete it fairly easily.

Welcome to the Haru fold.

Maybe Atlus should have introduced Haru as part of the reason why you guys can't use school roof as a base any more.

They could have be her usual adorable & apologetic self when you make some small talk with her (similar to how you could encounter Makoto at the library before they let her take over the story). She could also make small talk relevant to current events — and you could have early dialogue options like with the School Newspaper girl. The dialogue could update with roughly the same frequency

Then as it closes into the time for her to enter the story properly she can hint at some family stuff, and maybe wish that the P-theives could do something.

100% this, I really hope they do this in the remaster, wouldn't take too much to inpliment either.

One or two sightings before getting her as a party member is not enough, I don't know why Makoto got all the love in the story, it makes the other female characters feel like afterthoughts.

Haru only appears so late due to game balance. If she had appeared earlier she'd have stolen the show because the world doesn't deserve a person that's as nice and caring as her.

Absolutely, I can't help but feel like if Haru joined earlier, the gap between her and Makoto would be much smaller, if not reversed.

Oh yeah I remember that one douchebag who wanted to go after Karen. I sure showed him.

Ugh, they'd be so bad for each other.

Makoto and Ryuji would be better because both could learn from each other. Makoto's horizons would expand beyond being the perfect student, and Ryuji would probably learn how to make himself a more responsible person. Futaba and Yusuke had some cute interactions.

Shipping aside, I really hope for P6, your best friend character isn't such a douche. The whole class trip with Ryuji really pushed my nerves. Give me a nice guy like Lucio, Atlus!

Haru's great. Too bad Atlus waited until the end of the game to reveal her and put her behind a max proficiency gate.

If anyone's wondering, I went for Hifumi. We played shogi, made out, and I got to summon Lucifer. Not a bad deal.

Also, if this game is going to make the logical leap and say that all these grown women are totally down to date a high schooler, why not just go the extra two steps and let the game have gay relationships? I'd find it far more believable that any of your male confidants would be into you more than these older women, including your teacher.

Ah well, it's something we say with every persona. Maybe next time.

About to begin NG+, I assume getting all confidants maxed will be easy with the NG+ bonuses? Or are there any tips I should know to ensure I become Mr. Popular?

1. Have a persona with an arcana corresponding to the social link's arcana when you hang out with them. You'll have money and personas registered presumably so you can just summon a cheap one from the velvet room real quick.

2. The Fortune link can speed up the process

3. The Temperance link can buy you time to do social links, thereby also speeding up the process

Unfortunately, I think to the average Japanese person, the impression would definitely be that a teacher banging a student is more likely than male highschool students having a homosexual relationship.

Remember that entertainment is a reflection of society, not the other way round. Very rarely do works of entertainment lead the way in changing people's thoughts about societal norms, but rather the change has to occur first and be accepted, before most entertainment tags along and introduces these ideas into their work. Even then, it often lags behind on reality.

I looked up Futaba's romance scenes last night beause its not something I'll see on my own and I'm pretty convinced she's the best written character in 5 and easily one of the best in the series. She's great.

"I read about this guy who dated his teenage step-sister. It was rad."

Sorry, couldn't resist. :p

I like how Tae's rank ten relationship is basically 'well, uh, you're a minor... but what the hell, why not.'

Haru is the best.

Also Hifumi's S Link is excellent. Really love how grounded it is.

I wouldn't know. Since I'm not a deviant, I asked her "what do you think?" and as a responsible adult she backed off.

What's interesting is so far with her and Becky, I didn't even have to try hard to friendzone the relationship because just picking what made sense auto directs the relationship to a non-romantic one. I guess you'll have to REALLY want to get in their pants to go that route. On the other hand, the Makoto thing was really naturally integrated, and you basically have to turn down the relationship if you don't want it, rather than forcefully establish it.

Chihaya is the first one to show signs of being thirsty for young ones, since she literally asked if I'm into older women. Wtf!

I won't judge people.

But just ignore my shocked and disgusted face when you talk about how great it is dating your
younger step-sister that can't go outside if you aren't around. Yup. Sounds great. Totally healthy relationship. I mean, it's not as if she's romancing the first guy that she felt she could rely on. Not at all. Nope.

@duckroll I think Chihaya must be like 19 years old. Which, well, shouldn't be that bad.

I agree with this. Blank slate protagonists suck, and I'm glad that Joker has the feel at least of having a personality compared to the soulless husks we get in games from other series

I feel like Joker is trying to be this jack of all silent protagonist with some uniqueness and kinda fails at both. Make him a fully unique character, make him a complete blank slate, or go the mass effect route and spend some money making him a flexible unique character which is what I think atlus wanted Joker to be.

My main problem is that he says too little. The character has an actual personality that's often shown in cutscenes, in a lot of his animations and even in quite a few dialogue choices.

I think they should reduce the amount of romance options too. Not every woman in the game needs to have a romantic route. Having fewer options but fleshing them out and integrating them better would be great. Maybe having 4-5 options would be better than over 10.

Ohya's romance is the most f'd up since she keeps bringing up the age gap and even makes a joke about how the protag will probably eventually dump her for a younger, hotter girl. I feel like of all of the older romances, she's the one who more implicitly treats it like a fling. :p

That's impression I got as well. No older than early-twenties given what her backstory is like.

I agree few options and more story about the couple Like witcher 3

How old was Chihaya again? Was she older than MC? Despite being an extremely skeptical person IRL with a low tolerance for fortune telling stuff, I absolutelty loved her Confidant link.

I think it'd be cool if they found some middle road approach to the calendar stuff. Like, don't remove it, but allow the narrative to take the lead when needed and bring it back when there is some free time.

My take is 19 since:

She sounds like she left her hometown as soon as she finished High School to go to Tokyo.
She had problems finding a job due to various reasons.
She was found by that sect guy and I think she says she's been working with them for a little over a year?

Man reading the thread makes me feel like the odd man out. For romances in Persona I went.

P3 Fukka
P4 Naoto (Nobody will top her IMO)
P5 Ann

I'm like the one in few that made these choices right?
