Polygon - Exclusive: 19 Minutes of PHANTOM DUST Remastered Gameplay

We're in 2017, standard have been raised regarding quality or even comparable remaster of old games. Criticisms are warranted.

Criticism is fine, but the current state of the assets is likely effected by the budget and the total potential market for a niche game.

The fact that this game exists at all, in any form, should be celebrated. Picking over little details that should be brought to some arbitrary "modern standard" likely doesn't reflect reality.

where's mah kingdom under fire porting?

Sega has some intersting games still stuck on the platform Jet Set Radio Future, Otogi, Panzer Dragoon, and others.

Adam also said this. But i dunno it doesn't seem like it's anything other than a port graphically.

I certainly see no "wizardry".

Darkside's game was probably bad so they cancelled it.
Not hard to imagine.

I like to learn more on the dev's side and say that MS had too many demands and not enough budget. Especially with them having a completely unrelated cinematic made and calling it a 40hr sp jrpg.

Will buy it since I've always wanted to play this game, but it looks like shit, they really make zero effort. MS really stopped to care about their games library.

Actually Phil didn't even know this was being worked on for quite some time. Someone internal to MS did this as more of a passion project and just kinda showed it to Phil one day saying "Yeah it's almost done too!".

Yeah, and keep the price around 10 bucks. That's a bit more fair.

Polygon pretty much called it that in the title of the video.

But Microsoft Studios Publishing creative director Adam Isgreen Called it a re-release, it's not that hard to grasp.(Polygon pls correct the title)

I never played the OG, and was kind of hyped for the other project that got cancelled. If it has a reasonable price, i might try it out, games with spells just tend to interest me :)

It doesn't look like shit. Given the time and budget they were given I think it looks pretty well made. There is some bad textures and animations but hopefully a successful product will allow them to do some stuff with it.

Haha holy shit that's awesome. This definitely seems like a small internal project with no resources wasted.

I understand it's just basically a straight up-rezzed port, but I wish they added some main character animation, he looks incredibly stiff. I've never played it and will buy this day 1 though, still looks fun.

if y'all think that this is "below 2017 standards" for an old game release you should check out some of these Digital Eclipse NES ports and M2 2D arcade game ports

Zero effort would be leaving the game to die on its original platform, which this is anything but.

People really out here talking about remastering Phantom Dust like they did Halo and Fable, but forget to mention Phantom Dust didn't sell a fraction of a fraction of what either of those titles did, and most people aren't even aware of the games existence in the first place.

They don't have full source code access. They would probably need more funding and time to get the ability to completely alter the game. Also he said the way the assets were handled by the engine was very weird and would require some work to figure out.

Looks like a game from that time period.

I'm excited to play this for the first time.

I see some people aren't taking into account when the game was released, the fact that it's basically an "up-res" port, and that they're not changing the gameplay (one would hope/think). I suppose we'd get the same reaction with a lot of PS2/OG Xbox game ports if people hadn't played them though.

I've heard great things about it.

So I never played this game let alone heard of it but Austin Walker's short video earlier in the year on Waypoint got me interested.

So this video is giving me some real Soul Sacrifice vibes. Like in the way that you prepare yourself with spells before you enter an arena and collect new spells. I adore SS so if this is anything like that I'm going to be in love with this game too.

The graphics are definitely rough but it looks pretty clean considering it was an OG Xbox game.

Also the guy running around is out Syphon Filtering Syphon Filter.

I can certainly empathize with how anyone who doesn't have any prior affiliation with PD would look at that footage and think it looks straight up horrible.

It's a port not a remaster and it looks fine for what it is

I never played this game and it doesn't look that bad to me for a game from two generations ago

I see it as a "love letter" to OG XB fans that enjoyed it in the past. It's probably going to be their e3, "available now for free" moment on stage. I'm happy that those fans will get to play it again. I'll probably give it a try.

If so, why did your team actively work against the devs (Darkside game studios) and have the game cancelled?

Plenty of reasons why games are cancelled, we just heard the developer side of the story, but likely there were good reasons to cancel it too.

Did people even watch the video? The guy straight up said it's a re-release with better assets. He didn't call it a remaster.
Well, practically 99% of the remasters are just that. Ms had a better track record of actually reworking the assets though, it's a shame they couldn't do it for this game, but I guess it's due the game being kept Uber wraps until close to announcement, and likely they didn't have that much more success over games that didn't have the same treatment so less reason to do a complete makeover.

So hyped to finally play this again!!!

Any details on what they're doing for the dlc stuff? I'm not expecting new content but people seem to be mentioning micro transactions.

Oh, wizardry. I see now.

It looks about like what I expected. It looks like more of remaster than a port, but you could convince me otherwise.

Only thing confirmed is a DLC starter pack that allows you to make an arsenal immediately rather than post chapter 3.

List of skill contained in said starter pack can be found here.

That link mentions it's free, I'm just confused because some posters said there are micro transactions.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Watching the video its like watching someone who isn't great at character action games trying to sell you on the DMC series. You get the basics but none of the really cool or interesting stuff is shown off. Its not a great video in general but it doesn't do the game any favors, some of the later game power combinations felt like I was playing a Hunter x Hunter game in terms of how creative you could get.

This isn't a remaster.

This is a port that benefits from running on more powerful hardware.

There is a difference.

This isn't a remaster. It's an up-rezed re-release, like the Dead Rising 1-2 and Resident Evil 4-6 re-releases.

It being a port doesn't prevent the fact that people have updated expectation on what a rerelease should be.

Criticism is fine, but the current state of the assets is likely effected by the budget and the total potential market for a niche game.

The fact that this game exists at all, in any form, should be celebrated. Picking over little details that should be brought to some arbitrary "modern standard" likely doesn't reflect reality.

It would be the case if MS didn't cancelled the planned remaster. It being rereleased is fine but the perspective has been shifted because of their actions.

The DLC mentioned in the video was a free starter pack for multiplayer. Then a paid pack to access all of the skills for multiplayer, and that was it. They never mentioned adding any micro transactions at all in the video.

A shinier coat of paint would've done a much better job at cultivating a new audience based off these responses, so I will never forgive Microsoft for canceling the reboot and condemning this series back into obscurity again. Phantom Dust is amazing and deserves far better than all this half-hearted stuff.

If you're looking for real-time combat with actual strategy in terms of deck building, playstyle variety, and making tactical decisions on the fly, please don't overlook this game. There are ideas in here that I still haven't seen resurface anywhere else, like abusing environmental destruction to permanently change the rules of a match.

It'd be pretty easy to look at any TCG played with the most basic starter deck you can imagine, and say it looks boring.

Trust me when I say that the mechanical depth and interaction behind all of the cards you can fit into your deck in this game is nowhere near fully-represented in this video. It's especially evident in that the only card types you actually see them use are aura particles (which just increase your resource pool, i.e. mana/energy/whatever), direct attack skills and a couple defensive skills.

I feel like the best way to promote this would be to get a few veterans from the old Phantom Dust community, and record some matches of them with commentary from people who really know the game and are good at explaining it to those unfamiliar.

MS never canceled a remaster.

There NEVER was a remaster.

The game that was canceled was an entirely new game in same world, or at the very least a complete reboot.

This is a port of the original title.

And you can say your expectations are whatever, the fact is its a port and all the comments are complaining it doesn't look like a remaster, something it never was.

It is what I expected but also what I feared.

I had hope they would do some rework, just like Crash Bandicoot. It's a shame it's not the case.

I won't be buying it. Never played the original and I'm sure it should have been pretty awesome back then, but nowadays it looks rough both graphically and mechanically.

The shitposting in this thread is embarrassing. This is a game from 2004, what did you expect?

I'll see how much it is priced before seeing if I would try it out or not. I gotta understand this cuz it doesn't make sense looking at the gameplay. We shall see. I do see this getting released on Game Pass though. $10...sure, i'll sign up to try.

I don't mind the graphics.

Mechanically there still isn't really anything like Phantom Dust on the market and it was far from clunky in terms of gameplay. So unless the developers totally botched the job it should be rather amazing to play.

Looks worse than it did on the OG Xbox. Would've preferred if they just ported that version with chump change and HD upgrade. Hopefully more people play and pay the micro transaction so we can get a proper Phantom Dust 2 sequel.
