NBA Playgrounds |OT| More entertaining & less predicable than the NBA play-offs!

Yup I'm done with this game till they update. Playing against dirk and magic and can't crossover and get a shot without getting stripped. Try going for dunks to build meter and get shoved out all the time. Got Kawhi and can't steal but dirk strips me every time.

Just beat London. The game is so easy to cheese with a good 3 point shooter it's unreal. I got ray allen and clyde drexler in my intro packs and i've been using them to run through the whole tournament.

At this point, i always give the ball to ray allen before crossing half court, as soon as you cross half court they will attempt to steal from you, If you run diagonally right after you cross half court along the edges of the 3 point line, they will miss the steal attempt pretty much every time and then that will give you a second or two for an easy 3.

The lag online is really, REALLY annoying. Some matches are just fine, but other matches the lag is so bad I can barely hit any shots. Everything looks fine, but it's clear that my shots are missing due to lag. Getting "early" no matter how long I hold the shot for. Nevermind the matches when players are teleporting.

It's been awhile since I've experienced lag this bad in a game.

I haven't played an NBA Jam title since I was a kid and boy do I suck at this game. It's pretty fun but I don't understand how stealing works at all, and I certainly can't take the ball consistently from AI opponents. I'm on the first tourney and trying to get 2 steals in the Semis for practice-- but no dice.

When do I press the square/shot button? After I knock it out of their hands with circle/elbows? Just pressing it when they have the ball doesn't seem effective.

Which players are you using?

Dwight Howard and Maurice Cheeks, for now at least. Cheeks has a great Steal stat at 9 so I don't know what could be going wrong there.

How are you trying to steal?

There are two ways to get away from a steal, throw elbows or perform a crossover. Also, if your stamina is below 50% you don't be able to perform a steal. You controller would vibrate if you tried in that situation.

Why is it that arcade games like this can't avoid all kinds of bullshit AI cheese?

I'm going against Ivo and Shaq. Got shaq to move back to his own back court with a few seconds left and he throws up a 3 beyond half court and gets 4 points meaning it was a perfect release

Shaq...perfect release 3 pointer....from beyond half court.

Come the fuck on man. That should be a brick every single time without question

I know what I'm doing in this game but I don't know if I'll ever beat those two.
It's like Shaq and them decided to troll us with his abilities when they cut the voiceover of him.

You perform a crossover by using the right stick, right? Think I understand the basics of stamina. I just don't entirely get the controls and my complete lack of knowledge of basketball doesn't help...

I beat them but as you can see i had to 3 pt cheese it with Ray allen and even then it got taken into overtime because shaq hit another perfect release 3 pt to tie it right at the end

Yeah, I can score on them at will but can't stop them on the other end.
They won't let me block them and I usually am good at that.
I literally haven't seen them miss a single shot.

Pretty much. I was playing the Shanghai tourney game with David Robinson on the other team and he was sinking fadeaway/leaning three pointers all over the place. If you're going to force players to execute with the stats their players have, don't make the AI play by their own rules (or lack thereof). It's bullshit.

Yeah they don't miss. Only thing i could do was to just literally outscore them.

Yeah i agree. It sucks because the foundation is here for a fun game if things were tweaked a bit and it took itself just a tad bit more seriously in terms of being a little more feature rich, cut down on the AI cheese and have the stats actually matter and just have it's own sense of heart and soul.

I think it's cool you can use players from different teams but there should be some kind of perk when you use two players from the same team like maybe those two players get a +2 boost to their lowest attribute or something.

It'd be nice if there were some visual flairs for some of the more well known superstars like if every time Steph Curry or Klay Thompson made a 3, there'd be like a splash of water as the ball go through the net. Another example would be that there could be some kind of special kind of alley oop every time chris paul throws it to Black Griffin or DeAndre Jordan.

I can't see myself playing it very long because the whole thing feels like an unfair stealing/shoving match to me atleast when going against the AI. This feels like Mario kart in that you'll probably get the most fun from it if you play online/with other people.

It's not just AI cheese. Played a game online against a Patrick Ewing who went 6/6 from 3-point land. He's rated a 2 for 3-pointers. WTF is that?!

This game has no publisher

Mad Dog Games is the publisher.

You perform a crossover by using the right stick, right? Think I understand the basics of stamina. I just don't entirely get the controls and my complete lack of knowledge of basketball doesn't help...

Yeah crosser is just hitting the right stick in any direction. Just get close to someone and hit the steal button a couple of times. You'll run out of stamina, but that's how I get most of my steals. Sometimes I'll wait for a crossover, then go for a steal.

Yeah that's insane. At that point there's no reason to even have stats. So effectively everyone is more or less the same which is a shame because they have a ton of great stars in here that should all feel unique and different

Yeah, 3's are ridiculous. Difficulty for 3's needs to be increased and the difficulty of layups and jump shots need to be decreased. It's a joke how easy 3's are

I agree that 3's need to be toned down quite a bit but layups and dunks are easy. You have to keep an eye on your stamina bar and if it's below half, you're going to do a layup which means you should press the shoot button for half a second. If your stamina is above half (yellow) then you should hold the shoot button for about a second. It's weird but I've been able to consistently to do layups and dunks since I figured that out.

Really starting to get annoyed. Just had someone come back and win after I was up a good 20 points because of that star power-up and Dirk. I couldn't push or block his shots because of that stupid fade-away, so he was able to score 24 points in 3 possessions, then got a lucky 4-pointer to take the lead.

Been playing this with people at work on breaks, loads of fun in 2 player - the AI is just cheese however. I Have not played a basketball game since NBA Hangtime on the N64! Tabletop + single joycon works allot better than I thought I would, glad I got this for the switch. Anyone have experience playing 4 player on the switch? How is that? Considering 2 more joycons!

If they do this (make 3's harder), then they need to make the shot release timing more user friendly. Right now it feels inconsistent as hell. They also need to do away with timing for layups and dunks. The way they are both random grab bags in terms of execution, it's not fair to expect the player to need superhuman reaction to gauge the appropriate time to release the shoot button.

They gave Kevin Johnson a fucking 2 for dunks? What the hell?

Cool that George Mikan is in it though.
Is that too high or too low? I don't remember KJ being a prolific dunker.

Think i regret buying this already... not sure but i think they have somehow made a game worse than all of the Street series, the Nba Jam updated version and even nba hangtime stuff?
Have yet to try it with friends but i have the 360 version of nba jam on xbone and i feel like they are just going to trash this and say lets play that instead if we want an arcade ball game... Maybe Im missing something but that inbouding time is just ridiculous and slows the game down way too much..

Edit: Alright that was a pretty hot take i guess, after playing a bit more it is quite fun and addictive. For what it costs and what its trying to do i think its actually pretty good now. Just some things like the inbounding and the whistle blowing every inbound are maddening..Any idea why they did this? Surely there is a better way to slow the game down. Even if they halved the inbound time it might be ok?

This alone should give him at least a 4

Made it to the last tournament, Oscar Robinson and Pippen are cheesing me. One game Oscar gets like 8 blocks (I've only ever been blocked once by the AI up to that point in tournaments). Next game they steal the ball instantly on the majority of my possessions. That first game they won from a buzzer beater too haha.

Touche. I don't think I ever saw that highlight, or at least I don't remember it.

His isn't the only auspicious rating in the game. Vince Carter's dunk rating is something like 5, but I remember him being a dunk king. I'll never forget that time he dunked over some 7 foot guy during the olympics one year.

He's 1000 years old now and mostly shoots threes.

Got it yesterday, got Epic Durant and Stockton in my first packs and even though I got legend Chamberland and Mtumbo, they don't come close. Although I do use Mtumbo when I have a blocks challenge.

I definitely regret buying this. Won't be picking it up until some patches fix this game. AI opponent is worst than anything I've played in NBA jam or street.

I rolled Stockton and Grandmama through the first half of the tournaments, but I slowly started to need to switch it up to find better matchups.

Using Mourning or Malone right now with Allen, may try Westbrook because his dunking is nasty but I like to have a decent blocker.

Dirk might actually be the best player in the game for that reason. My only.issue with him is that his fade away will sometimes cause him to take really deep twos instead of the threes. I used dirk to win all of the tournaments, I used him along with mike conley.

Ewing is dirty (so much so that I've only used Mourning once after I got him). I usually use him and Curry if I just need to win, but I like trying other people as I get them.

I did get Kevin Johnson and Clyde Drexler which was awesome. Oscar Robertson is pretty good too.

I have Durant but I feel like good small forwards/PF get the shaft in this game, because they'll never have as high of stats to be the big for my duo, and they aren't fast enough or good defensively to be my point. I'm sure that will change once I get Pippen.

Im having trouble getting the ball back after blocking my opponent's shot online.

I have come to accept that everyone online is gonna just spam 3pt shots but its really not fun to block someones shot twice in one possession and not be able to get the ball back. Game has potential but they gotta do some tweaks, fix the stats and add more content.

I'm done too which sucks because I was enjoying the game for the most part but did post a few complaints that need fixing in a previous post however they better update the cheap AI. I can't even get passed the chris Paul Blake griffin game. Constant steals, I can't even move, knocking me down on almost every dunk and they never miss a shot!! Complete bullshit

I feel like looseballs in this game are weird in general. Jumping to get rebounds feels woefully imprecise.

John Stockton is a 10 in 3 pointers and steals. He's the cheese god for me. I'm blasting through the game with him and Wilt Chamberlain. It's insanity. I got them both in my opening packs and haven't went back yet.

Shot release timing is very consistent. What changes is what kind of shot you take and the stat ratings when you switch players.

Pick a player with a 3-pt rating at 10 and the shot release timing will be exactly the same as someone else with a 10 rating, but different compared to someone with a 9 rating. Also, squaring up to the basket and shooting is a different timing than taking a leaning shot.

KJ should have been at least a 5 in dunks.

Touche. I don't think I ever saw that highlight, or at least I don't remember it.

They should've used Raptors Carter. Some of the older player team choices are a bit odd. Wondering if the NBA had any input on that. Robert Parish on the Bulls, Carter not on the Raptors, Morning on Miami instead of Charlotte (this one is debatable, but still)...

I definitely regret buying this. Won't be picking it up until some patches fix this game. AI opponent is worst than anything I've played in NBA jam or street.

I think I lost 2 matches throughout my entire tournament run. IMO the problem people are having is that they're trying to play straight up instead of spamming 3s and steals. Throughout all of my tournament games, I can count the number of dunks I went for on one hand.

Im having trouble getting the ball back after blocking my opponent's shot online.

The way loose balls work in this game, watch the white circle on the ground. Once that appears the players will start looking in the air at the ball. You basically need to box out the opponent. After a certain point your positions can't change no matter what you do. Just move between the opposing team and the ball before that point comes and they can't get the loose ball.

Okay something about this last update made steals completely broken online. I'm assuming this is a lag issue. Whoever Player 1 side is (which I assume is the host in the game) basically can steal at will. I played a game on the Player 2 side just now and literally every single time the other guy attempted a steal it was successful while my attempts would not work at all. Played a second game and this time I was Player 1, and now all my steal attempts were near 100% successful. Ended up with 20+ steals with Curry, which is beyond stupid. Opponent was playing aggressive D and only ended up with 4 steals. This makes the game unplayable online. Wasn't experiencing anything like this before yesterday's update. Steam version btw.

How is this game overall and on Switch in particular?

My buddy wants to play online but hesitant to drop $20 since I'm not a huge fan of sports games but the NBA Jam vibe looks fun.

Yeah, I was just as confused. He ended his career in Chicago, but he's a Celtic for any fans of that era.

Zo's best years were in Miami with Tim Hardaway and Riley. That's not debatable lol. Charlotte didn't win him a ring either.

He spent more time in Miami and had a better team around him, but he was more dominant in Charlotte since it was basically just him and Johnson. Miami did better than Charlotte, but Zo had similar numbers on both teams. That's why I say it's debatable.

All that aside, it would've been nice to get alternate uniforms for some players. Putting newer players in retro uniforms would also be fun, especially since the retro uniforms are already in the game anyway.

I definitely feel the host advantage, but haven't had the steals issue on console. I know the patch was different for PC than it was for console, so that may be the cause.

I mean, I felt the host advantage on shot timing before. Hitting 3s was always a bit less consistent online, but this is something else.

My player would immediately get stripped off the inbound pass 9 times out of 10 before I could even perform a crossover and I couldn't do the same thing to him even though I was trying.
