Press Reactions to Wonder Woman

Jumping the gun a bit on the certified fresh rating, I know, but I'm willing to tempt fate a little. An image looks better than a "It's good" quotation.

Holy shit we're at the point where the film is being screened and we're less than a month from release and reviews are coming in and people are still

still

stilllll

On that "yeah, but she doesn't look like my comics" shit.

Like, she's already been in a movie and we're still getting it.

(then again, the Star Trek threads are still coughing up lensflare lols so I don't know why this is hitting me sideways)

Bobby I expect better from your ass. Actually read what I fucking said and what I was fucking responding to. Nowhere, fucking nowhere did I even criticize Gadot. The exact opposite, in fact. I criticized the idea that wanting a Wonder Woman that isn't small and thin is purely a matter of sexism.

You're supposed to be smart. I expect better reading comprehension from you.

You said you would have preferred the comic book version of Wonder Woman

I responded to that.

What part did I miss there.

Can I bring up how much I dislike the "bracelet explosion" power?

Just seems too over the top. Might just be I don't like the effect they used.

Might also just have flash backs to the BvS fight scenes where I couldn't see the action over the flood of energy fx.

Early reactions are always positive and I don't know why anyone pays attention to them.

no they're not? BvS's press reactions weren't positive :/

this isn't the fan-screening where everyone with a twitter account creams themself about how Snyder-God has destroyed the MCU with a cinematic masterpiece >_>

Maybe hold off on this until after it actually receives such acclaim?

Maybe I should have made a 'fresh' version of the gif, but certified isn't exactly a high bar to clear. It just needs 75% of people to like it.

People want to like the DCEU. They also want to get behind a female lead superhero. If WW is actually good...well, like I said, I'm willing to tempt fate a little on this one.

As much as this really tired talk about Gadot's body has been, they did try to go with a diverse group for supporting Amazonians.

(I imagine there'll be a cliche response about how Gadot should look like them)

covers? Tina Guo is the original artist who played the Electric Cello and has mentioned she is writing some songs for the WW soundtrack
Ah, didn't know. Thanks for letting me know. The original poster didn't specify that nor did the description of the video.

Literally the only way to get "I'm upset she isn't like the comic book" out of my post is to ignore the entire context of my post.

It's like walking into Superman and coming out saying the film asserts that people can fly.

Like no, really, Bobby. What's the thesis statement of my post? What is my assertion? We all learned the basic structure of a of a paper in elementary school. Here, let me help:

Thesis - Criticizing Gadot for being smaller than you'd like Windy to be isn't inherently sexist.

Supporting paragraph - This is how I personally like to see Wonder Woman.

Conclusion - Gadot is fine, better than I expected, but there is reason for people to want a bigger Windy.

Hold on now, too small and too skinny are perfectly legitimate criticism having little to do with sexism.

This:

Is how I personally like to see Wonder Woman. With some bulk and muscle. She's supposed to be an Amazon after all.

Gadot's fine in the role, better than I expected, but there's nothing wrong with wanting a Wonder Woman who isn't scrawny.

This post is like 2 years too late lol

It's nice to want things after the fact.

Literally the only way to get "I'm upset she isn't like the comic book" out of my post is to ignore the entire context if my post.

I'm not ignoring the context of your post. I'm speaking generally about the fact the larger conversation is still even happening (the context in question). You voluntarily joined that conversation in an attempt to help explain how someone could still be in that conversation without necessarily needing to be a sexist.

Which is cool I guess, but I'm more or less mocking the fact the entire conversation is even still happening.

You happened to be the one still trotting out scans from a comic as a comparison point by which you believe Gal Gadot could/does fall short, so that got referenced.

I went back and reread your post.

You assert that you prefer wonder woman to be more bulky than what Gal Godot is.

You use a picture of a comic to illustrate the look you want.

I am ASSUMING that you want to be interpreted to mean that you just want someone bulkier than Gal Godot.

However, you are using a comic to illustrate your preference.

So, as a third party, what exactly did Bobby get wrong?

So many parties taking a personal vested interest in seeing this movie's succeed or fail that it's difficult to take any of this seriously. It's exhausting.

Don't give me that shit, Veelk. You know how the English language works.

I could not give you that shit.

Or you could stop being obtuse out of stubbornness. My post was explained how, even if you didn't mean, it, Bobby could have interpreted it that you wanted Gal to have a comic book figure by the fact that you used a comic book image as an example of what you wanted.

I do know the english language and it's full of bullshit that obfuscates meaning inside out. You can either accept that and try to clarify yourself when people mistake your intention or you can just stall out the conversation by getting pissed at people for misinterpreting you.

You're choice.

Your posted explanation literally requires skipping over the very first thing I said in my post in order to work and I'm the one being obtuse?

Anyway, people seem to be really liking Gadot's performance specifically, and the rapport she has with Pine, while Jenkins appears to have balanced the interplay so it never feels like Pine is upstaging her.

The comparisons to Superman: The Movie are heartening, especially as they pertain to Gadot's performance.

Again: Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe didn't quite realize they'd been given the beating heart to their series after First Avenger came out, either. It took a little bit.

I'm hoping that's what this is with Diana.

"Hold on now, too small and too skinny are perfectly legitimate criticism having little to do with sexism."

What does this have to do with what Bobby is responding with, which is the incredulity that it's a conversation still ongoing?

That. Is. The. Point.

To get to that incredulity in response to my post, you have to decide my post is saying "Film Wondy should look like comic Wondy."

To make that decision, you have to ignore that the thesis statement of my post is "Wanting a bigger Wondy isn't inherently sexist."

And to do that is to ignore the context of my post.

Thank you.

But...you are saying that.

You're just also saying it's not sexist to say it. Which no one was seriously asserting it was. The guy you were responding to was mocking the idea of how feminists are going to make think pieces on her size, but the way it's written clearly denotes that he's joking.

But even if he was serious, that doesn't matter because you're still saying that "This comic book Wonder Woman is my wonder woman." So Bobby's response of "Are we still talking about this shit" still makes sense. He's not taking anything out of context, he's just ignoring the causal reason for why you made that assertion, which isn't necessary to include.

Saying "I like Wonder Woman bulky like this comic" doesn't lose any meaning when taken out of the context of "I like Wonder Woman bulky like this comic and I'm not sexist to do so"

But...you are saying that.

No, I am not. It is not remotely what I said. You have to contort my paragraphs into all kinds of bizarre shapes to make what I said sound remotely like that. And, in fact, it still doesn't work, because as someone else has pointed out, there have been literal dozens of Wondy designs over the years, plenty of them scrawny. My preferred design 7s neither recent nor classic. It's 14 years old. Would it have been easier to comprehend if I used the animated version of that same design? (Doubt it).

Furthermore, I don't even proscribe that she SHOULD look like that. I specifically say "this is how I like Wonder Woman." So no. In no way does that post resemble that statement. You have to WANT to have they argument to get that from it. Or at the very least be primed to.

Eeeeh, nevermind, not wading into that convo.

Hey Anton.

What you think about the possibility the DCEU now has their own Cap?

But it's Diana Prince!

Did you ever think it'd be a possibility that Gal Gadot would be the one to put the DCEU on her shoulders? And is it less or more plausible than the concept of Chris Evans doing the same before First Avenger dropped?

Eh, would rather avoid comparing Wonder Woman to that undercard ass movie.

I'm hoping for something a little more than a film only a cult following within the fanbase will have anything to say about.

Which is why, instead of whining about it and stalling actual discussion for several posts at this point, you should have jumped on the chance for re-clarification when you clearly saw that your intended message wasn't getting through. You saying you prefer WW as bulky doesn't preclude the implication that you think that's how WW should be. And that's all there is to it. You are acting like there is only one clear interpretation of your post, when the very fact that we are having this discussion proves that its not. You can either deal with that like a normal human being and try again, or you can lash out at others like you're being persecuted. One of these is the mature response, the other is not.

Bobby, it's still Snyder directing Justice League.

My hope for the DCEU has always been isolated to this one film, Wonder Woman. I hope it's good and if it is, awesome. But if Wonder Woman is going to become the heart of the DCEU in the this film, it's probaby going to go into cardiac arrest in the next one.

Your post is confusing to me because it seems to reference a reality that is alien and strange to everyone else's.

Welcome to discussing film with DCEU fans.
