In USA, wanting a gaming laptop around $1500 - 1700, want to play dolphin and ps2 emulators, steam games (Ori and the Blind forest is the only game springing to mind), and convert dvds to decent looking mp4 files within 3 hours tops. I can do the video editing on my desktop, but it takes around 17-24 hours to finish. My newest computer is from 2004, so it is time to upgrade. Any ideas? 17in screen would be preferable since I'm not getting any younger and my eyesight is bound to get worse.

It basically is the competitor to the XPS 15, but better.

It starts at $1,899 though, I'm not a fan of the pricing.

This is $1,799, and ticks pretty much every box you could list.

It's ready to go out of the box.

How does the whole desktop 1060/1070 in a notebook concept work in practice? Both cards consume 100w+ in a desktop, how much performance is sacrificed when they are in notebooks?

not much so long as the notebook has decent cooling (my 1060 notebook has 2 big fans and 3 radiators) ie isnt stupidly thin for no reason

Gigabyte Aero 15.

Funny you mention it, was looking at that and the MSI Stealth Pro:

What kind of editing?

Youtube videos, so heavy video editing, recording, multitasking with a 20+ tabs open. I have a hefty PC at home but I have been traveling frequently. Some light gaming occasionally if I need to try out an pre-release of something. My Latitude E5540 is starting to show it's age so I want something powerful but not too heavy that I can't carry it around a gaming conference easily.

The performance difference is about 5% if I remember correctly.

I have one in my laptop the Alienware 15 R3 and so far everything has been good, if you are doing intense gaming then the fans to spin up pretty loudly but the temp of the GPU has never went over 70 degrees. The bigger issue for most people seems to the CPU temperatures.

Hi guys, could you suggest a laptop which costs around 600-700$ to me, please. My main purpose is for studying and multimedia.
Thanks so much

I'm looking for a laptop to play a lot of new games, stuff like PUBG and Destiny 2, in US, looking for preferably a 15 inch laptop. Budget for the laptop is 2000.

Currently I'm between the MSI GT Series GT62VR with the 1070 card, and the Lenovo Y720 with the 1060. Is Lenovo generally more reliable? The Asus ROG with the 1070 is also appealing.

Any of these better than the other? I'm willing to give up 1070 if the rest of the machine is better and more reliable. I'm upgrading from an MSI GT60, the internal keyboard and mouse don't work anymore, and a lot of the USB ports are very flaky.

Also, any to look into that I did not list?

Both the MSI and Asus ROG should be reliable.

Hi everyone again, so i've shortned my list to two laptops, looking for some insight.

The Lenovo Y520 : i7-7700HQ, 8GB, Gforce 1050ti 4GB, 1TB HDD

MSI GP62MVR 6RF : i7-6700HQ, 8GB, Gforce 1060 3GB, 1TB + SSD 128

So basically, one has a better CPU the other a better GPU, however, from what i've read, the difference between the CPU's isnt as big as the difference in the GPU (which are very different).

Both will cost me around 1000-1150€ which is in budget, the screen on the MSI is much better than the Lenovo, which is a very big plus for me. What do you guys think? I will probably make this purchase beginning next week.

Get the MSI, it has the SSD.

1060 6GB
256 SSD + HDD slot open
16GB RAM
All for 1,100.

Just saw this browsing amazon, it's been awhile since I looked at laptops so im not sure.

No, I don't see any other 6GB VRAM 1060s in that price range.

I'm not a fan of the aesthetics, but the price is nice.

VR worked brilliantly.

I am super happy with the HP Omen. It's like 4 Surface Books taped together.

Also happy that further stress tests indicate I can push it further, but I have no reason to. I don't like DSR so everything I have attempted to play so far has been "mhuaaa"

Outside of DSR, you could just downsample.

In the Nvidia control panel, create a custom resolution of say 2560x1440/60Hz, and you'll be able to select it in game.

Bam, free IQ improvement.

Looks like a good deal but there would definitely be some skimping in some parts to get to that price.

Yeah I looked at some reviews, the screen is pretty mediocre.

Average brightness is 230nit.

70% sRGB, 50% NTSC, 52% aRGB is bad, meaning the colors are washed out.

1. You'll might have to pay tax for it
2. The Lenovo Y720 can be found for less, with 1TB 5400RPM HDD, but you can install an SSD yourself
Check Lenovo B&N section on Lenovos' site (not sure how they actually call it)

5% slower raw performance and 50% less vram, all depends on how future proof you want to be really

I get that, but I wouldn't advise that he spend 200 to 300 extra Euros, for the extra VRAM.

3GB just means he'll be running AAA game's textures on High, instead Ultra.

Just read up and found out that DSR is garbage.

And here I thought it was just downsampling, not using an expensive filter that hardly looks great.

Is anyone here from Brazil or any other country in South America?

I'm thinking about selling my desktop (i7 - GTX 970 - 8GB RAM) in order to buy a notebook with a 1060. However, machines like the Lenovo Y720 can cost up to 2500 USD which is way out of my budget. Can anyone recommend me any stores around here with better prices?

Yeah you should really just create non-native resolutions, then select them in game, as I described above.

This is the benefit of the laptop not having Optimus, true downsampling.

I you link me to some stores, I'll try to help out.

I know technology prices in Brazil are really insane.

I'll give it a go sometime.

I was gunna set up SGSSAA + MSAA in a few games but I don't think the image quality is worth the inconsistency I'll get across games...

Might as well ask here. Anyone else have problems with World of Warcraft on a GT73VR 6RF? My 1070GTX driver keeps crashing in that game and i have done pretty much everything outside a windows reinstall to fix the problem.

Yeah OSGSSAA can blur the image. Looks great sometimes, not so much in others.

It's also pretty inefficient.

I have the same machine, but don't run WoW.

You may have tried all of these things, just want to get them out of the way. So:

Has WoW always had this issue for you?

Is it crashing in a certain scenario, or after an amount of time?

Do you have any overclock running? If so, tried lowering or removing it?

Have you tried turning off G-Sync?

What driver are you currently using?

Has WoW always had this issue for you? Only on this current PC

Is it crashing in a certain scenario, or after an amount of time? Seems rather random, sometimes in a few hours and sometimes in ten minutes.

Do you have any overclock running? If so, tried lowering or removing it? I tried underclocking and without overclocks

Have you tried turning off G-Sync? Yes, i tried with no G-Sync

What driver are you currently using? Eh.. The newest "games ready", but the problem predates the current driver. I could try an even older one though, worth a shot.

I also have an issue with the screen not turning on sometimes when starting up the pc from both sleep mode and otherwise. Though i doubt they are related.

I suppose there could be some driver fuckery going on but i cleaned up the registry of GPU drivers and reinstalled them and nothing changed.

My budget is R$ 4,000.00.

Cheapest laptop I can find with an Nvidia 10 series, is the Inspiron 15 7000, and that's $4,647 with a 1050. There's no way to land a 1060 within your budget, at least not buying it in Brazil.

What are your options, as far as importing? Are there heavy taxes?

I'd try an older driver, just for the process of elimination, and always use the clean install option under custom installation.

Only having crashes in this one game complicates the troubleshooting. Definitely check eventvwr.msc, I'd like to know exactly what errors are shown there.

Just for the info, what mode are you running? Turbo, Sport, etc?

Yes, taxes are heavy here.
The Razer Blade on Amazon US for example:

Price: $2,099.99 + $2,066.99 Shipping & Import Fees Deposit to Brazil

Guess I will have to stick to my desktop for the moment =/

Jesus, that is insane.

What if someone in the US bought a laptop here, then mailed it to you?

Haha!

Yep this was the biggest issue for me too. I have the same laptop and I posted about it on page 179.

To sum up though, absolutely use Display Driver Uninstaller first and then install the latest Nvidia Drivers. My Dark Souls 3 used to crash on any setting I tried it other than everything lowered, until I did this. Now I can even push it to 45-60 on 4k without a crash lol.

And update your vBios to this one

Also, G-Sync may crash your games sometimes at least in my experience especially if the voltages and clocks jump around alot which happens in every mode except Turbo.

So yea, even after I clean installed latest drivers after using Display Driver Uninstaller and updated my vBios which resolved plenty of my issues, Ghost Recon Wildlands would still crash after like 15 seconds in-game.

That's when I switched on Turbo mode and tried it.

And it ran perfectly, although my temps went up near 80 C, so I turned on Cooler Booster and was seeing temps of 62-64 or so. Minimal variation in CPU clocks seem to matter alot in intensive applications.

So I've since tweaked my Turbo setting to 3.7 ( default max Intel turbo) from 4.0 for long sessions of heavy gaming and disabled the +200mHz GPU default turbo setting memory overclock, as I don't wanna push it for a gain of like 10 frames unless experimenting. I also keep my GPU on an underclock of -150mHz using MSI Afterburner as I've seen a further drop of 3-4 C in GPU temps while no noticeable change in fps.

And someone posted on MSI forums that his GT73VR crashed anyhow after like 3 hrs of gaming, so he dropped his turbo setting to 3.9 from 4.0 and it has been stable.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: Actually, using on battery is pretty stable too for heavy apps although with nearly a 3x performance drop. And a poster on MSI Forums had more stability on running at max GPU clocks (1645mHz) using overclocking, although I wouldn't advise to try this first.
