Simply put, they lost their cash cow when Connery left. Replaced him with Lazenby for X number of films. Got a good film out of him, but it was a major disappointment at the box office coming off Connery's films. Then their new Bond up and quits. They have no choice now but to overpay Connery to come back, and then they had to recast again. That is a disaster. 3 Bond actors over 3 films in 5 years, with OHMSS only raking in about a third of what Thunderball and Goldfinger did in North America.
Moore brought stability.

It also feels like Bond is doing a job a spy might actually do, and it doesn't culminate in some supervillain's implausible lair (which then explodes). I'm rather fond of it myself.I'm partial to For Your Eyes Only. Doesn't feel like a Moore film for the most part.

Ok, I'm with you. IMO, I think had he not quit, Lazenby would have settled in and the series would have been fine, but who knows, right?
The Bond I grew up with. Obviously he had some stinkers, but Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, and The Spy Who Loved Me are all-time classics.

It wouldn't be my ordering, but those are definitely the best films of the Moore era. Even the lesser ones always had at least one great element in it that was poking out from the nonsense (that goddamned amazing car flip in The Man with the Golden Gun, everything that came out of Drax's mouth in Moonraker, the finale in Octopussy and Walken's delightfully loopy performance in A View to a Kill).
Connery is 87 this year
Lazenby is 78 this year
Dalton is 71
Brosnan is 64
They are all getting up there. Craig just turned 49.
You're mixing him up with Barry Nelson, who... also died at 89. Huh.
No, that honor belonged to Barry Nelson, as the US TV program Climax! adapted Casino Royale for one of their episodes. I haven't seen it myself, but I have always wanted to since they had Peter Lorre as Le Chiffre, which is pretty tantalizing casting.
Is anyone else going to do a Bond marathon in memory of Moore?
I should, which reminds me I still need to pick up the most recent Bond Blu Ray Mega Set.Is anyone else going to do a Bond marathon in memory of Moore?
I'll also say Christopher Lee is a wonderful villain in MWTGG, and Moonraker's obvious Star Wars bandwagon-jumping is cheesy in all the right ways.
Also in AVTAK, Moore has a sex scene with GRACE GODDAMN JONES.
