Do you eat food from gas stations?

Surprise: anywhere that's dirty and doesn't clean their shit can give you food poisoning or botulism.

Gas station or restaurant, some places are just filthy.

There are probably some gas stations that are far cleaner and safer than some expensive restaurants and grocery stores.

When I was a little kid my dad told me that he was hanging out at his friend's convenience store and the soda machine wasn't working, so he popped the front off and the whole machine was full of mold.

This isn't that unusual for outdoor soda machines, they accumulate a lot of moisture from the refrigeration. The soda inside is usually not touching anything but other soda cans or bottles though.

Brother's Fried Chicken here in LA is legit.

This, and Krispy Krunchy or however the fuck it's spelled. And whatever's at Racetrac

Nearest Buc-ees is like Lafayette or something. I've never stopped. I didn't know they had watermelon fudge though

I'm in Westchester County in New York. Half of the gas stations around here have convenience stores with delis inside. They'll make you a sandwich with Boar's Head deli meats and cheeses, they'll cook you eggs and bacon on the grill, they'll have soups and other hot lunch choices, and all of it is actually good.

I had two friends with me a few months back and we were about to take a road trip. I drove past the Dunkin' Donuts (seriously, does anything there actually qualify as "food?") and stopped at my usual gas station deli: at the Exxon, 750 N Broadway in White Plains. They looked at me like I had 3 heads, but after hot egg & cheese sandwiches on freshly-baked deli rolls, they were believers too!

AMPM food is pretty legit. I've had their hot foods often and I haven't keeled over yet. But I mean, if the station looks kinda run down and shady I wouldn't be as brave.

Depends on the gas station. Like other places, some are good and some I would never buy anything I'm supposed to consume from.

However, some gas stations are actually pretty well kept and have some surprisingly good food selections.

I don't eat prepared foods from gas stations here in the US, but I had a lovely time consuming a plethora of foods from 7/11 when I was in Japan.

That fried chicken *drool*.

Edit: 7/11 isn't really a gas station as much, but kind of in the same vein.

Edit 2: Actually local Chevron's have Aztec Grill and they are freaking delicious!

When I was younger, on a 3-day road trip to Mexico to visit my grandparents, I bought a 7/11 hot dog. After a couple of hours on the road, it gave me cold sweats and knocked me out cold. I was told the next day that I was so gassy and they were incredibly smelly that when we got to the border the Mexican officers working told my parents it smelled like they had rotting meat in their car and that they should hurry to where we needed to go so we could dispose of it.

Since then I have never trusted gas station food.
Wow, I think your anecdote ruined my appetite for several weeks.

Yes, all the time.
I have to admit that even our worse rural gas stations seem to be in better shape than most of the privately owned US gas stations. (I have seen some toilets in florida which had shit stains from the toilet seat all the way to the shop floor itself..)

and to be fair: The guys from the gas station in the article just had very very bad luck.

It's more likely to get struck by lightning than getting infected by (food related) botulism bacterias these days.

Only when I'm hungry. And even then it's packaged food like chips or cookies.

And even still the potato chips taste worse than the same brand at a grocery store.

My Racetrac has some good deli subs, pitas, wraps, and fresh bakery goods.

Some QTs have awesome coffee/ fast food counters to them.

So yeah.

I eat $1 sausage bis cuts and spicy chicken biscuits every day from 7/11. Their nachos were special treats I gave myself in college.

7-11 gives out coupons for free wings and wedges every few months. I've tried those as a result and they've been decent once and not great the others. I haven't gotten sick but it doesn't build confidence in trying other foods.

That said this past weekend I got a slurpee and watch a strange looking family fill slurpee cups with nacho cheese and chilli.... they were eating it straight. Some people I just uh.....

Only coffee and prepackaged foods.

Some of the gas stations in my area have sushi, lmao

Oddly the 8-4 play podcast guys say 7-11 sushi is good.... they live in japan. I'm still afraid to try it.

I work 1A to 7A and sometimes if I don't bring lunch with me I have to go out to pick something up. My options are:

1. McDonald's.
2. Gas stations.
3. Run to Meijer and get something to make.

If it's after 4 I will go to a gas station because McDonald's only serves breakfast at that time and I hate their breakfast food when I want a burger.

The gas stations here though are actually dairy outposts, and a Speedway which has like its own fastfood court inside.

Wawa is pretty good.

Yeah, from Wawa. They have good sandwiches.

Sheetz, WaWa, and Quicktrip yes. All others, no.

Only Wawa, cause that's the best shit on the planet

Wawa expanded here recently and I'll buy subs and stuff from them, but it's not exactly a typical gas station.

Gas station in the OP looks sketchy af.

Only at Wawa, but I'm not sure if that counts, since it's the best.

You guys know what's up! I'm visiting my cousin in June and I can finally have some Hoagies again! Wawa is love, Wawa is life!

Depends on the gas station. RaceTrac, QT, 7-11, Buc-ees, etc? Sure. These places have standards and imho don't really qualify as "gas station food". But I won't go much beyond that. You can find a good unknown place that has kick ass food, but for the most part a random local gas station.. no thanks.

There used to be a place by my wifes job that sold incredible breakfast sandwiches and also great Mexican food. Closed down and became a 7-11 :\

I think gas station food in general ranks right up there with Taco Bell in terms of what it does to your insides, though. I won't eat any of it if I am going to be on the road for a long time. The Czech Stop in Texas is the only exception.

This Chevron near me used to have some damn good hotdogs,
Only stopped buying them because they started costing the same as legitimate hotdog places.

Yeah I drive all around Texas and into the South regurally on business, and occasionally head north a bit. If I was going further west then Texas or to the Northeast or Northwest I fly. But when I am driving, I use a certain level of intelligent discretion on what I eat. I would not even stop at the place in the OP unless I really needed gas. And if I did stop there, I would buy packaged foods from well known brands. I am not going to buy a slice of pizza or a Taquito that could potentially have been there for a week. That is just common sense. A sealed pack of Doritos beats out a Turkey leg in that situation.

There was a sushi restaurant that sells these $20 CAD sushi boats.

My entire family and my friend's family got food poisoning except me. Everyone was projectile vomiting and shitting evil from the bowels.

Sushi wasn't even that good....

Sushi restaurant closed down eventually because people got food poisoning from there all the time.... >.>

Edit: Also RIP to the person who passed away. Fucking sucks to die from eating goddamned gas station food. What a terrible way to go.

Lol I have thought about making this thread before. I love gas station food .

Roller items like taquitos and hot dogs

Sketchy tamales from a rice cooker

Old pizza

Cold Premade chicken patty sandwhiches with cheese

Milk shake machine

Hot breakfast sandwiches

Give it all to me , except nachos . I've never had those and probably never will . Too basic .

Edit: almost forgot ... fresh donuts

Does every petrol station in America have hot food on sale like this?

In UK they all just have juice, crisps, sweets, like a mini convenience store.

At motorway stations you'll have KFC/McDs/BK outlets, but no weird dedicated petrol station food guys.

So that's what my wife was telling me earlier tonight. We were heading home and I told her I wanted some nachos from 7-11, and then she told me how some dude died while eating nacho cheese...

But anyway, yeah. I usually stick to 7-11's though. And if it's a random place I will stick to corn nuts.

not too often ...but there's a nearby gas station that sells the best banana loaf i ever tasted.

some good fudge there, too. both made locally.

very fresh, very good.

If a long distance bus makes a break, it's usually a pretty decent gas station / relax area. I just go for coffee and sealed food that is delivered but not made there (sandwichs and such).

Any decent mid tier gas station will have stuff like hotdogs and such at the very least.
