Digital Foundry: Why Can't Destiny 2 Run at 60fps on PS4 Pro?

Sorry to have gotten all your GAF tightie whities in a bunch with my post lol....for those who are flaming me, it only makes you look like a dumbass though incapable of responding in an intelligent way. Yes i know..... #thisisneogaf

Anyways...we all have that cynical side of us where the sometimes immediate knee jerk thought is what we come up with, but obviously isn't the truth. I would hope in this day and age stuff like that doesn't happen. No tinfoil hats here, i love my PS4 Pro but it's not my only system of choice.

Isn't there some Sony policy prohibiting PvP games from having a higher frame rate on PS4 Pro than normal PS4? I remember hearing about that at the launch of the pro, and assumed that was still the case.

Bungie is very committed to Destiny feeling the same in PvP and PvE, for better and for worse. I don't doubt that Crucible could hit 60 a fair amount of the time but if PvE can't, then it's not going to happen.

They've definitely discussed this as one of their priorities before. That said, it's a fucking albatross for the franchise. They can't balance anything right, the MP performance is unnecessarily worse, not everyone doing PvE stuff wants to be forced to play PvP, etc. It's a thing that looked good on paper a long time ago and is clearly a problem, yet they charge ahead with it.

The cynic in me deep down thinks that MS moneyhatted Bungie to purposely not code the PS4 version to do 60fps so that they could have that exclusivity on the obvious but not yet announced Scorpio version. I hope that's not why, but it wouldn't surprise me.

As someone who knows nothing about these things -

Mark Cerny said about the PS4 GPU Compute - 'Tasks that can fully occupy the CPU cores will be achievable using just a fraction of the Playstation 4 GPU'

So is this massive bullshit? Or is the Jaguar so bad that the GPU is already full taxed?

Despite everyone trashing this post, this will be one of the posts that idiots fanboys use to say: "SEE! SONY-GAF", "HIVEMIND", etc without any context to the rest of the thread.

I'm certain of this because I've seen it play out all the time by people online who deem this this community to be so stuck up, yet act in a way that so hilariously arrogant that's clear that don't they themselves don't have a dime of self-awareness.

Anyways, this was a pretty pathetic post.

Just a thing though... From my experience, the Pro has been as much about higher res than it is about higher framerate.

Framerate should have been PS4 Pro's #1 priority.

How exactly ? Pro has the shit Jaguar CPU and a 30 % bump is best it could do at 2.1 Ghz.

Scorpio is not much better at 2.3 Ghz, the whining 30 FPS scorpio threads will clog up GAF when it releases....

Most PC CPU and the new AMD Zen do 1.7 x more work per clock, and normally clocked almost twice the speed means most desktop CPUs are doing 3 x the work of Jaguar.

Until CPU technology advances for consoles, they are stuck. I have a pro, all I expected with Jaguar was stable frame rate and better resolution...

I was playing overwatch last night, 120fps/120hz. So good. I wonder if my pc will be able to reach 120 fps in destiny 2 without looking like crap.

Having said that i'm ok with destiny 2 being 30 fps on ps4. Destiny was "good" 30 fps.
I like how solid the experience is all around. The only place where performance would consistently take a hit was during the siege engine part in the WOTM raid.

Playing BF1 on the pro and the fps is not really 60. It bounces around 30 to 60.
Personally wild fps variation is more jarring to me than the game being rock solid 30 fps.

2017 and a new PRO system is running a shooter at 30fps. What a joke

You realise that the developer picks what to focus on and any game they like could be 60fps with the right sacrifices, right? You'll likely be disappointed with the shooters next gen too when the developers use the extra resources for other things rather than framerate.

Don't be so hard on yourself, your post wasn't that bad.

There's no reason to assume anything about me, my gaming habits or anything else based on one post. Have a lovely day.

That mostly applies to physics and lighting simulation. Stuff like networking, which Destiny has to do a lot of, generally has to remain on the CPU. Also the fact that it's a multiplatform title means that can't dive in too deep to custom work for each platform.

The GPU can only execute certain code efficiently. Otherwise we would only have GPUs and there would be no CPU.

Networking / AI / MAIN gameplay logic are not highly parallel, and therefore terrible fits for a GPU.

There's no point in responding to a post as divorced from reality as yours with anything but ridicule, lest we accidentally lend some degree of credibility to pure bullshit. And no, we don't all have some child in our head spouting nonsense.

You dont look any better disrespecting people like this though.

Its just an opinion in the end folks lol.

I dunno, I'd say he does. This is what you're defending, I don't know why you'd hoist that mess onto your shoulders.

I'm still confused why the debate is whether Pro or Scorpio can run it at 60fps, and not all the consoles. I said in other threads - the PVE excuse, fine. 4v4 PVP? Come the fuck on. Bungie either has a really poor engine or doesn't care. I bet you this game is going to run like shit on anything but the best PCs.

For PVE I get it, heavy loads on CPU. But for PVP? I doubt there's as much strain on the CPU in a 4v4 game as there is on a 20x20 (Battlefront) one.

I'm not saying Bungie is intentionall sabotaging the mp, numerous examples show that 30 fps in mp can do just fine. It's just that why blame the whole thing on the lack of CPU power? (I know the CPU in both the base and the pro is dog crap, but again, Battlefront shows it's more than possible to achieve)

Why not just say that it was a design choice. It'll probably play just fine, but I just refuse to believe their (bungie's) reasoning behind 30 fps.

*sigh* we already had a thread on this exact video, and like all Destiny threads, it went just as poorly, but in a different direction.

Not in this world.

"Hey this PS4 Pro can do 4K resolutions, I'm sure that looks great with our 4K TV!"

"Framerate? What the hell is that?"

The average gamer does not care about framerate, it would have been silly for them to market it as such. Graphics sell games, not framerate"

It's crazy how DF has clarified and pretty much be the representative of these mid gen upgrades. I will always wait for DF to clear things up.

Well the thing is, Andrew House states that PS4 Pro was their answer to PS4 owners leaving the ecosystem for PC gaming and I think frame rate has a lot to do with the decision to jump from console to PC.

So, really, I'm not sure how this implementation of Pro would prevent someone from making that decision.

60 fps will never be a standard. And as we progress into this gen we will see more and more 30 fps games as devs push the hardware limits.

The Pro and Scorpio exist almost exclusively to address the small but growing 4K TV/monitor market.

Pretty obvious that most devs would prioritize their efforts there, instead of trying to squeeze the life out of CPUs that were underwhelming in 2013.

I don't want to play the backseat dev here. But i believe 4x4 pvp @60 fps is doable. But bungie is aiming at parity across everything in consoles. So...

Maybe console players just aren't ready for the advantages you'd get with 60 FPS, but on PC you'll have people playing at 30hz, 60hz, 144hz, 16:9, 21:9.... etc etc.

Anytime I die in BF1, I just assume it's because the other guy is playing at 144hz and I'm still at a plebeian 60hz =)

- Those hoping for 60fps on Scorpio are likely to be disappointed for the same reason

At least read the OP.

I'm pretty sure the op didn't have the summary when he commented. But yeah it's kind of obvious he ignored the video too.

Battlefield 1 in that video dropped to the 40s for PS4 Pro.

Yeah 60fps is a difficult target to achieve.
Also, doesn't BF1 use dedicated servers vs client servers for destiny 2. That could also be why the game is 100% 30 FPS
My 4K HDR TV will smooth that out with game-mode on no problem!
I'm pretty sure game mode on most TVs removes any smoothing the TV would apply for quicker response time

Yeah. For me framerrate is second to none. I was expecting PS4PRO and Scorpio to be able to run at 60fps.
PC is the right place to play destiny, definitely.

Despite anybody that actually had their feet planted to the ground telling people not to expect games to run at 60hz on those consoles.

Was expecting some polemics in this thread, but not this! LMAO

Dude, just watch the video or read the OP resume, it won't hurt. If the game is CPU intensive, not even Scorpio may handle it at 60 frames per second. And even if it could, they probably would choose not to do it so they don't hurt the regular XB1 / PS4 users experience.

I sometimes wonder what is like not being able to enjoy a game because it runs at a lower framerate

Most people aren't saying that though. I played games in high school on a severely underpowered PC at like 15fps, sometimes going below for stretches, and still had a great time. 60 is better though. Games should shoot for better when possible, especially for something that affects both visuals and gameplay. A game running smoothly at 60 with less shiny looks better to me than one at 30 with more shiny.

To be honest i like how standardized the console experience is (supposedly).
