Just wanna share a fun bit of behind the scenes trivia with those who aren't following the thread in OT - the NES cart at the beginning of the trailer isn't special effects, it's an actual hacked cart. :D

I'm somewhat of a Dracula snob so I was almost in pain when I went to see it. Kate Beckinsale at her absolute best kind of helped, though.

If I don't like a movie, whatever. I'll walk out of the theater disappointed or with a "well that was garbage" mindset.

When I left Van Helsing it felt like I had just paid money for physical abuse.

That was Trevor, you can see he has the exact same clothes on.
🙁

Oh.. :(

TBF He's always been neglected in canon. Lords of Shadow had more references to him than the Iga games.
I mean, a descendant of his was the partner of Julius' student after the Sorrow games. So there's that.

Poor Grant Danasty. They even cut his equivalent in Julius mode. Hammer gets no respect either.

Cross post from a Reddit post of mine but I've done some quick investigating on this after getting excited from the teaser.

As a big Castlevania nerd I'd like to point out that this looks like its based on Castlevania III, Sypha, Grant, and Alucard are all dead ringers for their more modern versions especially for Alucard wielding a sword in the teaser. This is exactly what I wanted to see for this series when it was first announced so my optimism has shot up, this is canonically the first Belmont to kill Dracula.

I've done some more digging and apparently the writer is Warren Ellis who is an English comic book writer and from some digging I've done he's been sitting on a script for a trilogy of Castlevania III movies since 2007. There's an old blog post from that year that has him talking about the specifics of the script and feeling like he'd need to cut Grant DeNasty from what was then a movie, but the teaser clearly has a knife throwing dude so that might have changed. Also in the blog post he name drops Lisa as being an important character which strikes me as him knowing the source material really well extending past Castlevania III. If anyone remembers in Symphony of the Night, the Succubus illusion is that of Lisa or Alucard's mother and Dracula's wife which in the lore is the whole reason he goes on his conquest across Europe is because of her burning at the stake if I'm remembering correctly, which is exactly the set up for Castlevania III or whatever this animated series looks like it will be covering.

The knife dude is just Trevor, I think Grant's cut which makes the blog post hold more water as being the current plot for the series. Very excited for July now even still though.

tl;dr Castlevania nerd thinks it looks promising and might be very faithful to the game series.

Thanks for the extra info. Makes sense going to use Castlevania 3. Extra main characters, and it's the first time Dracula dies after all. Hope we'll see some background on Dracula.

Not sure how much they'll adopt the game lore. Considering the fact we know this show is 8 episodes over 2 seasons, that seems quite small to focus an entire episode on Lisa, the deity Dracula "manipulates" for dominion over demons, or the devil forgemasters.

Well they didn't say Konami lol.

I think the idea is that Konami lets a good developer make it. Get rid of the rights. Something. Just about anything.
besides Platinum im not sure what other developer would be a good fit
i hope its Platinum :D
But yeah i don't see an easy choice that would fit with the classics and be high quality. LoS went a bit low.

Just saw this on Twitter and man, I'm impressed. I had 0 hopes but it actually looks quite good... Let's hope it's not just the teaser.

That's pretty accurate. Only movie that I hated more in theaters was Scott Pilgrim. I think I'm too damn old to understand it.

Does this use existing characters from the franchse? I see this trailer and feel like I have seen this before.

In all fairness i'm not sure what I was expecting.

I hope they start Lisa at the stake burning and Dracula reaction to it. And when Alucard shows helping humans they'll show some background on how they lived as family. That's what I'm expecting. Not much else really apart from Lisa backstory. The devils forgemaster I really doubt it.

I loved LOS so maybe I can't relate there. Didn't like LOS2 that much. Parts were great.

I mean, so many developers out there. Someone could do it.

Apologies!

No prob Bob.

From Software. Souls combat always felt to me like a good 3D take on the combat of the stage-based Castlevania games. This, along with the environments, made it so Souls filled the gap that Castlevania left behind for me to a great extent. A From Castlevania with the colors, sound, and sense of humor of the series' past sounds pretty good.

LOS is my favorite of the series after 3. 2 was great in the castle sections, not so much elsewhere. 1 had the classic CV feel, a lone warrior on a one-way trip to stop evil. Fucking loved it.

Dracula Untold was a pretty good LOS movie, too.

Yeah, I thought LOS1 was incredibly epic. A few minor problems but I thought it felt like a good take on the medieval style.

has this re-sparked the debate on whether you had to pus down your NES cart to get the game to work or not yet?

this looks like something i would totally pass over if i was browsing netflix, BUT its Castlevania, so ill probably give it a shot.

If the show had more planned episodes, I would prefer a two-parter on the death of Lisa and how Dracula obtains power. Prior to her death, he is mostly a vampire, but it's after she dies that he begins using his powers for dominion over many demons, and per the original story in Dracula's Curse, colludes with a deity to do this. That deity is probably the longest-running hole in the original lore, and that's pre-IGA (though he kept it in his canon.)

I'll give an Engrish translation of this bit, as it's often overlooked by Castlevania fans. This is from Dracula's Curse manual...

During the Dark Ages, there was a man who was feared by all. A man who has stopped being human. His name was Count Vlad Tepes, otherwise known as Dracula. His territory was located at the outskirts of Transylvania, at the Wallachia territory, where he used a taboo art to resurrect an evil deity. The deity granted him power and in exchange, he summoned several apparitions from the spirit world in order to scorch and massacre the entire nation of Wallachia with darkness.

I do kind of wish they would have used a different style since I'm allergic to anime, but realistically I don't know what else they could have done. I would have liked to have seen designs closer to the NES games, as I'm not a fan of the direction the series went from SOTN on. That style probably wouldn't translate well in motion.

Gotta say, I'm pretty excited for this. If it really is an adaptation of Castlevania III then I'm all in. That's my favorite game in the series.

Yeah From,i would agree but i don't see them ever working on Castlevania specifically.they work on their own stuff mostly,Bloodborne is the closest you might see to a great 3D Castlevania.

Anyways this C3 series looks wonderful.can't believe they are making this from an old NES game we need more animated action goodness :)

Eeeeeeeeeee, I'm so fucking psyched for this.

Castlevania used to be my favorite game series before Konami dumped all over it, and while it's not a new entry in the game franchise, you best believe that I'll gladly take this.

I'm speculating that a second season may be based on Rondo of Blood, and if successful, the potential third season will be SoTN since those stories are directly connected.

It's anime stylized but it's being made by a western studios, so best of both worlds imo.
