Hiya AZ GAF! I'll second the fuck scorpions comment. I found one hanging from an ac vent in the ceiling before, one stung my dog, and another baby one was in my wife's pants when she put them on which stung her ass.

Hate them.

In my 25+ years living here and 5 different houses, I've luckily never had the pleasure of living with them. The first one I was stung by was in high school at my friends house when I opened up a box from the garage.

Every time I move, I go through a mini-panic wondering if the next house will be my scorpion kingdom.

I found a scorpion in my shoe once, it was like my worst nightmare. Fucking sting out of nowhere, then had to hobble to the bathroom and try to get him out of the shoe and into the toilet to flush him. The little bastard came out of my shoe and landed on my hand and stung me again. He was in the shoelaces somehow where I thought he was in the actual foot part, and the way I was holding the shoe he managed to do that. The chances, I swear

Yikes, stories like that make me check my shoes every morning. I think the last time a scorpion was in our house it was hiding in a blockbuster VHS case, so it's been quite a while. I think the spiders and birds around here eat them.

AZ PROTIP RIGHT HERE:

If you can populate your home with less dangerous species of spiders (Mostly thinking of daddy long legs, but there are those flat wolf-like spiders too) and crickets, they prevent brown recluses, black widows, and scorpions from coming into your home.

This is completely anecdotal evidence btw

Scorpion in the shoes? One of the first things I did when I moved here was get one of those hanging organizers for my shoes.

I've always just had the habit of shaking my shoes out before I put them on. I have found one in there once, but mostly I just see them in the hallway near the front door. Though I also go into the backyard with a black light and a stick and kill as many as possible.

But then you have a spider problem. I have 3 non running cars in my backyard, so I'm used to spiders. I will say, I did have black widows underneath one of them, but now its just other spiders. So maybe it does sort of work.

There you go!

You just gotta be cool with a couple house spiders chillin in your corners.

In Gilbert I had a shit ton of scorpions where I lived. Got stung in the face.

5 years in awahtukee and I've yet to see 1.

That is crazy. Growing up in Mountain Park Ranch I had a ton of scorpions and that is literally on the border of Allwhitetukee.

It varies I guess.

Got into my car looked at the temp gauge 104... nah that can't be right it was in the 80's last week. Bring up my weather app... Yeah FML it is 104.

just moved into new build last month in Estrella, I've seen two scorpions so far so I count myself as lucky, especially since the property borders a wash

They both were dead--I've sprayed the interior and perimeter of the house with the stuff you can buy from home depot + the granules around the lot and outside the house.

I think it's helping

Two things:

Very excited for Comic Con. Like any excuse to go downtown.

Also, if you have not been to Little Miss BBQ, make it a quest of yours to go. You have to get there about an hour early (they open at 11) but it's ohh so worth it.

This was such a mild May, especially compared to the last couple years where 100s started in April.. here's hoping the summer follows suit and we don't see the 100-teens.

I want to go but with the Game On Expo coming soon, that's where my money wants to get spent. Think I'll skip this year so I can buy more retro goodness.

I was just in downtown Scottsdale for the first time and it's really nice. I felt like I wouldn't be mugged. I'd been to a part with just a bunch of ugly ass white business buildings and car dealerships before and thought Scottsdale was overrated, but all the brick & plants downtown made it cozy.

Anyone dressing up for Comicon? My wife and I are going as Lara Croft and Indiana Jones mashup, then Misty and Ash the next day. Our kids will be the Red and Pink Power Rangers, then Squirtle and Pikachu the next.

Indeed it is , some really good restaurants too. Shout out to Los Olivos and that little Italian seafood place that seems straight out of Goodfellas. I lived right near old town when I went to U of A ( I'm weird ). Did you take a ride on one of the golf cart taxis? Scottsdale quarter is also pretty cool for shopping on the north side .

This is a thing that I never knew existed and now must absolutely go to.
I recommend it! Plenty of stalls to buy retro games and other merch, and, if you are interested, they hold some fighting game tournaments. Last year a kid wearing a charmander cosplay entered in the Street Fighter V tournament, it was really adorable. It's just for fun so it doesn't feel that bad to lose to better players either.

A random dude and I duked it out on Puzzle Fighter and it was a blast. :D

It was bound to happen. This thing gets bigger and bigger every year. Be safe everyone.

The show is expecting 110k people to show up this year over all. 106k last year.

The show is beefing up security like crazy. Hours before its even open today, and I i've seen at least triple the security everywhere that there is normally. I'm sure more will go on shift when the show actually opens.

The convention is taking no chances anymore. There will be plenty of undercover security as well from now on as well.

This is supposed to be a fun event for everyone to express themselves and share in the joy of others, and some people just want to watch the world burn. Its really sad :(

Fantastic thread.

I've been thinking of moving to AZ but I just don't know where.

I've lived almost my entire 41 years in southern Indiana and I am done with winters. If I never see another snowflake in my life I would be ecstatic. I have developed seasonal depression during the winter and it gets worse every year. I can no longer take dreary day after dreary day for months on end. I was almost suicidal this past winter because of it.

I was in AZ back in 2007. Visited my sis in law in Scottsdale and drove up to the Grand Canyon.

I'm just not sure where to live. My wife is a small town kind of girl. But she's also an ER doctor and the breadwinner. I don't believe they have hospitals in the middle of small desert towns so I'm not sure where she would work. I work in real estate and can always get my license out there to keep doing what I am doing.

I've looked at a lot of the smaller towns that look appealing, like Sedona or Prescott. Somewhere in the central of the state in a valley where you can escape the oppressive heat.

Any suggestions ?

Prescott is a good option. Not far from Phoenix, Sedona or Flagstaff. I know people that live in Prescott and travel in to Phoenix to work. May be an option for your wife.

This is good advice. I'd also add Oro Valley/Catalina Foothills/Sabino Canyon as a viable option as well. Not as cool weather as Prescott but definitely much cooler than Phoenix. Also, Tucson is a quick drive (15 minutes or so ) and has a huge medical community. Moreover, it is substantially cheaper than Prescott while still maintaining that small town mountain community vibe. To clarify , the Catalina Foothills area is to Tucson what Scottsdale is to Phoenix ( ie nice restaurants and community and such). If your wife is really a small town kind of lady, it's hard to imagine her enjoying a commute into Phoenix as the driving/traffic is a turn off for people who enjoy a slower pace to life .

Cave creek even is a decent option. Close to hospitals in Scottsdale/ anthem and has a nice smaller town feel I guess.

It is a western town though so be aware of that. (Rodeo bars, western stores etc)

I've got a brother in Arizona, and some of the stories are bonkers.

He's a bit of a gun-nut, and he says that he can basically go out of town onto state land, and shoot to his heart's content.

Arizona-Gaf, I ask you: is this legit? Can you really shoot willy-nilly on state property out in the open?

Yep, do it all the time.

As someone from California, this is insane to me. The idea that someone can step out of town onto state land, and shoot basically anything with no regard for warning others, or safety is mind-boggling. I understand, and approve of going to shooting ranges, but Arizona sounds crazy.

Now, this is a knee-jerk reaction, and I am sure that the number of people injured by random gunfire is minimal...I hope.

The thing about deserts is that no one likes to go there. So you're pretty safe to shoot to your hearts content.

And if you are the type to go off in the desert in the middle of nowhere, you're likely there to do something loud (shooting guns, riding quads, setting off fireworks, etc.) so people will figure out if there's someone in close proximity.

Well, typically you go down into a wash so you are shooting at an embankment or hill of some kind. There are informal yet established spots that the locals know for longer range target shooting.

I'm not going to pretend that the rednecks don't get wasted and shoot at god-knows-what, but normal folks do follow an informal protocol.

Just took a weekend vacation to Prescott last weekend. Absolutely beautiful city. I'm usually down on Arizona, but I'd definitely like to live in ether Prescott or Flagstaff. Tucson sucks.

It's not like its open season. You have to be a certain amount of miles away from major roads and residential areas. Plus you don't shoot on flat land, you should be using something like a mountain or hill as a backdrop so the bullets go into the ground, not an unknown distance through the air.

If you have any basic intelligence, it's easy to be completely safe.

I once got there at 11:30 and they were out of all the brisket and pulled pork....The warning is real and the wait is worth it.

This sounds a bit better. The way my brother described it, he basically crossed the freeway onto state land, and shot into the desert.

It sounds crazy but then look to see how many accidents have ever happened. I've never heard of one. It's very open and you will know if someone is near you.

While I agree , there is a certain charm to Tucson's scummyness. Also Tucson has a ton of outstanding restaurants and foody type places. Like i said , i have no problem recommending Oro valley, catalina fooothills , and sabino canyon area . All fairly nice and hugely different from the "in the cut" vibe Tucson exudes.
