Square Enix: Final Fantasy XV "greatest contributor", fastest-selling FF (6 million)

That PSN price mistake must have cost them millions.
I would think Sony would have to reimburse SE for the lost money, though I'm not an expert so I don't know for sure.
So theoretically the tail on this thing needs to be 4M?

Weren't they saying it needed to sell 10M before it released?
No, that was always a personal goal for Tabata and his team. Later interviews revealed SE wanted at least 5 million otherwise FE on console would have ended.

With the PC release and the GOTY versions for consoles with all the DLC's it will reach 10M. Tabata saved this flooded ship. Now Sqenix, give us more mainline FF please.

Holy crap, an ffxv thread that isn't all salt? I'm proud of us gaf, I knew we could do it!

Well deserved, and I'm looking forward to Prompto and Ignis dlc. Do hope the next entry is more complete at launch and rushed a little less in the second half.

(Edit) for those frog haters, the secret was headphones. Even cheap ones would help you find those croaky bastards in just a couple minutes.

but my opinion is based on 20 yrs of playing FF so I think it has some merit.

Except in the real world this is not how opinions are considered more or less valid. I've been eating pizza for twenty years but if a pizza chef told me my taste was shit and I should try something else I might consider it.

Great game has great sales. No problem at all!

Also this is why SE are going to keep making DLC for the game. They would be stupid to leave money on the table by not having post launch content for consumers to buy.

There's still the eventual PC release and definitive edition with all of the DLC.

7 milions seens like a safe bet.

Considering they are planning more DLC than Gladio/Ignis/Prompto Episodes, i wouldn't be surprised if we don't see a definitive edition this year.

Also, congrats to SE. Can we have Kingsglaive The Game now?

Because of hype and fanboys, the best Hitman ever gets kicked to the curb, and a middling Final Fantasy sells.

The gaming industry just shot itself in the foot again.

I'm glad this game sold well. Well deserved. Final Fantasy XV is in my top 3 favorite Final Fantasy games. And if SE delivers on even part of the potential of those story updates, it may move up the list even more.

EDIT: and I'm not ashamed to say if SE released an FF XV-2 or more DLC next year, I would be there day freaking one.

Congrats!
Does someone know if Promptos photography are helping to sell the game? I once posted some pics on fb and some (non-gamer) people showed interese

The game sold well and It's a great thing for the employes. Glad for them.

Lets hope that they can keep that playerbase.

Saddly, I won't be a Day 1 buyer anymore. I wasn't satisfied with XIII and this game just wasn't for me, it sadden me because I wanted to like it so much. But oh well, I can see that many liked it so, good for them.

Episodic release is a good way to make your game bomba. FF VII Remake might flop too because of this.

Lesson learned by SE: Story content doesn't matter, just create a world with generic quests and slap characters on it and you'll sell 6 million.

The real reason it sold that many was the long wait and insane hype. Not deserved, but at least the FF franchise isn't dead and there is hope for the future.

I think the marketing blitz at the end was one of the biggest factors. Anecdotally, I know a lot of people who have never had interest or even knew about FF that picked this up.

After many years, this is the first game I have cared to plat. After 90 hours I had a blast. Sure the story was rushed and still irratated with Tenabrae. I expected it to be a thing.

However the combat, and monsters carried it for me. Never once got tired of it. Was so fun. Magic at first was wonky and different but it turns into some overpowered fun shit. Still don't understand people whining about it affecting party members, was never a problem even before the accessories.

Can't wait till they hopefully get a full fledged story and I can play another 90 hours.

Lots of people said it bombed before the sales numbers made them quiet down. And now people are moving the goalpost to subjective things.

Nah fam hold that

People were saying that because it was $35 in less than a month. I'd still classify that as a bomb because it tells you that the game was massively overshipped.

Man, I'm glad for Tabata. He's directed some great games over the years and doesn't deserve to have shit thrown at him.

I guess that cash influx still wasn't enough to save Hitman...

This is not how it works unfortunately, they can make billions out of FF and still decide to get rid of Hitman, such companies won't hold a dead franchise that is losing money just because they make a lot of money in general.

Eh, they should have made a 60$ game and released it full. Absolution did well in spite of it's quality, so a better game would have theoretically done even better. It just proves how difficult it is to market the episodic model. When the first reveal to the public just leaves people confused, then you fucked up hard.

Final Fantasy II exists. If you don't like FF15 that's fine but don't go swinging around big claims like that.

Final Fantasy II (Japan) was a lot of things, but that leveling system was anything but forgettable. Now if you said FFIII, then you might have a case. Even then I vividly remember trying to beat the last dungeon without saving.

Me as well, a fully fleshed out WoR weird be nice. I love all the love letters to FF6, but they seem so hollow at times.

I thought FFXV was a decent atempt to put together a game that was clearly in trouble. They did a lot of things right but overall I still think FFXV is like a 7. What they need to do now is build off of it and make something truly great. Nintendo got me into video games and Final Fantasy made me fall in love with them. I want to love Final Fantasy and in order to do that they need to 1. Fix the mess of a story FFXV was and 2. make the combat system more fluid and less janky. I shouldn't be falling over every 10 minutes in battle.

Good on Square. Need to go back to the game at some point and give it a chance again. Still on the tutorial mission.

Hmm they will probably get to 10M quite easily especially if PC version is coming up, 7M is more than a bet, it's like saying that tomorrow the sun will rise.
