There are 802 Pokemon.

I want to a see a reboot where Nintendo has to pare down the current 802 Pokemon down to 150, and all of the others are no longer considered canon.

I imagine governments will be toppled and societies collapsed in the ensuing chaos.

Of course it won't be just the original 150. They will pick and choose the surviving mons. And then reveal them one day at a time, like the Smash Bros Dojo.

So these designs are bad... because they could potentially lead to designs you do not like?
except they're not - they're icicles

and no you can't go "but that's just lore", they literally showed designs of vanillite being an icicle, so it's actually not limited to the lore and shitposting with "oh I can make a crappy design and put some lore in it", these pokemon were actually designed with lore in mind that they don't have to rely on them to stand on

It could have been a better design. That's the whole point of the argument.

In case no one's brought it up yet:

Pokemon's new slogan is "Train On." Not "Gotta Catch 'em All."

Pokemon isn't about collecting every Pokemon you can anymore (yes, that is one of many things you can do, it's not the draw of the game), it's about meeting new and old Pokemon and battling and capturing them. It's about battling and trading against other people, about exploring a world and going through an adventure with your Pokemon by your side.

Basically, Pokemon is about being a good trainer, not about "catching them all." And as far as the gameplay goes, I would lose interest in a Pokemon game without new Pokemon. The series has never been mind-blowingly great in any real way, imo, not the visuals, not the story, etc. Remakes are the only time I'm okay with there being no new Pokemon because there's usually been a fairly large jump between the original games and the visuals and storytelling of the remakes.

So all in all, no, there can never be too many Pokemon, imo. Pokemon is only as interesting as it is because there's something new to discover in each game, and the idea that there are too many Pokemon to collect is irrelevant, as that's not something that is necessary for someone to enjoy the game, as opposed how to clearing the game by beating the Champion is necessary for players to do.

You guys I know some of you have your little 150 hay day stuff but don't be forgetting Mew just because it wasn't available in your region.

Imagine if bug and ghost types were real... Yeesh.

was more worried about what humans would be doing to them, but I guess ghosts are usually depicted as existing just to torture people like your average Japanese horror.

poke-bugs are less disgusting looking than what we have irl though
compare joltik with an actual tick :S

I mean there are some Pokemon I don't like.

Toucannon for example.

He's just a fucking angry Toucan!

Well I dunno, some Bug-type Pokemon are way too big for their own good lol

Something about his face just makes me laugh, like he could use a hug or something. Love his design, and also that his beak can apparently get very, very hot...

Come on, a giant ass bee with drills? Nobody wants to run into that shit. Or a moth that can burn you alive.

I stopped playing/caring after Gen 3. The Pokémon were getting too ridiculous after Gen 3 and it appears that trend has continued.

Those 3 generations have a special place in my heart though. ❤️

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
I feel like you and joe just like most things Pokemon related by default and we'll never agree on anything negative

Magnezone is a UFO which is more interesting

not really, as I said I don't like a bulk of Gen 1, HG/SS is overrated, I particularly don't like many early gen designs, etc.

And yeah Magnezone is great.

It could have been a better design. That's the whole point of the argument.

Yeah it could be, but that wasn't the point of the argument, or if it was, you're executing it poorly.

is there a gen you think has as much universal appeal as say, pikachu, mewtwo, charizard, vulpix, eevee etc from gen1?

As much? No. But like, that's where it all started, so not surprising. That being said, I always felt like everything after Gen 4 has had a more mixed reception, except maybe Gen 7 thanks to stuff like the Alolan forms.

Someone should do that iconic minimalist square color swatch thing for all of them like that thread about Street Fighter II and ARMS characters:

Just to be ridiculous and see which ones can be recognized.

Wouldn't work because they aren't all similarly shaped.

Yea, the closest to Gen 1 always felt like it'd be Gen 3 and 4, with it leaning towards Gen 4 due to how nice/popular the starters, Lucario, etc. look.

Six also has this badass

It got a slot in Smash because Sakurai was convinced it'd be a popular Pokemon

He was right.

Also the XYZ anime did it lots of favors by having it front as center as hands down Ash's best Pokemon ever

Gen 3 and 4 have them, hell I'd argue you have Mimikyu now and yeah Greninja

see Gen 1 it's less of "universal appeal" and more of an "old guard" i.e. they came at the right time and the right place.

It's why I think MMPR/Zyuranger outfits are crappy but they have universal appeal because they hit it at the right time in US.

the fusion mode is so dumb looking, but I guess kids like it or something
Pikachu is obv his best, and probably always will be

Forgot about Mimikyu, yeah that one is the most recognizable Gen 7 Mon.

I remember lots of people sharing that promotional song about "Ghost Pikachu"

I don't have any problem with the ever-increasing number, but I would really like one more generation with a whole new set of 150 like Black and White did. As someone who's been around since the beginning, I'm just not really interested in training my eleventh Gardevoir or whatever; I've spent enough time with the old guys. It's part of the reason I'm not really interested in the remakes of old gens, and why I wasn't into S/M until the second island when I finally managed to fill out a team with new Pokemon. What am I going to do with a Ledyba, y'know?

I don't know the exact number but less than half of all the Pokemon are fully evolved. The number of "species" is much smaller.

God I hate Lucario. I hate how much the Pokemon company tried to make him "happen"

tbf he isn't the worst example PC pushing a pokemon

i really don't think you should be praising Mimikyu for being a good design, it's a good idea sure but the design isn't really much

I really should make a bingo board for pokemon GAF threads because it's always the same posts, different day.

"Only the first 151 count."
"This new pokemon/design is shitty."
"They need to stop introducing new pokemon already."
"[Gen 1 pokemon] > [Gen 2+ pokemon]"
"Gen 5 was the worst gen."
"Gen 5 was the best gen."
"Pokemon needs a reboot. OG mons only"
"Popsicle LOL"
"Trashmon LOL"
"Imma let you finish but Gen 2 was the GOAT."
"The designers have run out of ideas."
"DAE pokemon is too complicated these days."

etc.

I can't wait until we reach 1000 mons! :D

I'm not sure how you're going about defining "universal appeal." Gen I designs are, in reality, not fundamentally different from other generations in design ethos. The only thing that makes Gen I "universally appealing" is nostalgia. Otherwise, other generations' designs have the same fundamentals.

Too cute.

eh, its real body is so horrible it has to wear a mask. Its just a jealous potatosack pokemon made for hipsters to claim they like it more than Pikachu itself.
you can look cute too if you cosplay :)

im not entirely serious but it is funny the extent people go to hate on the mascot

if they made something more appealing than pikachu they would have made detective mimikyu instead
they really did strike gold with some of them to the point where they try desperately to clone them each gen

Lucario happened on its own--people were legitimately obsessed with the thing back in Gen IV. TPCi just took advantage of it from there cause might as well. Zorua/Zoroark is the example of them trying to force the magic to happen again and it just kinda... not.
