Alamo Drafthouse hosting women-only Wonder Woman screenings June 6th

It's bandwagoning this internet talking point and trying to get a bunch of women who like to feel they're being political to pay to watch a shitty superhero movie.

It's not political in a way where it makes the world a better or worse place. It's political in that it's targeted advertising to marks that try and define their personal brand with political movements.
The fact that the Alamo is willing to piss off some manbabies is encouraging. It means companies and marketers don't have to listen to them when it comes to appealing to women. It's proof that they don't have to be afraid to market more towards women. And if you think a company like the Alamo doesn't care about it's audience you must not know the Alamo's reputation. In fact I don't buy the whole "corporations are out to control you man" cuz all your doing is downplaying this. Companies are finally realizing women have money. Also, all of this is going towards Planned Parenthood.
Can someone explain the Entourage joke to me
From what little I've seen and heard it's about a bunch of white guys who fake their way into Hollywood just so they can party and bang hot women. It's the most dudebro-ish show and movie that has almost zero appeal towards women.

Hmm? I just made two effortless posts.

Anyways I'm talking less of this particular GAF thread and more of people in general, in real life discussions, in the past few years.

And I'm not saying that by defending something like this people dont defend real issues. I mean that people inflate trivial issues to seem like a big deal. An example being how going to the cinema was never a male-only event and that this isn't progress in any way, just a publicity play.
Isn't it just people critiquing this event the only ones expecting social progress as a result from this? Cause everyone else just sees it as a fun time to hang out with their girlfriends to see a good movie.

This is literally all it is for most of us. Instead, we get to hear and see even more grandstanding. Posts that are like a master's thesis style breakdown that completely lacks the self-awareness needed to realize they're still doing it. It further demonstrates that its about them the whole time, except with verbose window dressing.

Exactly.

I posted the Alamo's original promotion of this thing which didn't even mention the Planned Parenthood proceeds (and of course this post wasn't responded to by the original person I was addressing.) Of course, offended men would be the ones applying a completely made-up goal post to the event before critiquing it from the very angle they fucking made up because they can't see women's-only events- something that dares to excludes THEM, to say THEY'RE not the center of the universe- as existing for the hell of it.

We all know the common nerd sentiment that anything that isn't just for men is "AGENDA DRIVEN." Minorities reminding others of their identities is in and of itself a political stance and part of the special snowflakes' greater intent to shove political correctness down the throats of the good ol' boys, the knights of free speech, the crusaders of "equality," the rational men who just want to enjoy art "as intended."

So next time I do a costume jam with my girl friends, I'll be sure to listen to a lecture from a man on how it won't solve sexism and thus I should be ashamed that I'm falling for capitalism disguised as progressivism.

Extra bonus points if he's white and straight.

I'm no American, but I'd visit the hell out of Alamo Drafthouse if I'd be one. What an amazing twitter account.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to the assholes who have bought tickets just to see what happens.

One of them on twitter compared himself to Rosa Park for fuck sake. Who knew that this is how you get people to engage in social issues.

I can't speak to the rest of the chain, but the location near me is amazing. It's always my absolute first choice when I go to the movies.

But not women or men only nights.

I am fine with this screenings. But I think that I have to reconsider my view on NeoGAF as a very liberal board after reading this thread. Or topics like this are luring a special kind of people

Yes there are also only Men and Women nights in Hamburg. UCI did this many times.

Given what people have said about the Alamo, them dudes are about to get their feelings hurt.

And they deserve it. They want to do nothing more than ruin this event (which is for charity, btw) because WAH WAH You said I couldn't GO!!!! Fucking wastrels.

Uhhhh, OK? Thanks for your donation, hope you enjoy the movie!

Who knows what happens when they show up. But at the end of the day they're giving Alamo money to give to planned parenthood...

???

Great plan. Sure showed them.

Maybe this is Alamo's true objective. Get guys who're too insecure to see a superheroine movie to buy tickets out of pettiness.

I think this is awesome.. I don't know why I was surprised when I found out about the backlash though. Told me cousin about this and she thought it would be cool and was interested in going since we have an Alamo Drafthouse nearby where we are at.

I LOVE IT!

Alamo is the best!

I mean Guys who get upset by this are embarrassing. Man the fuck up!
I hear ya on that! What must go through the mind of a guy living in today's society to even be remotely upset by something like this. I don't even wanna waste the mental energy required to figure out some embarrassing mindset like that.

Once again, this is pretty damn awesome and glad Alamo Drafthouse did this.

I am going to make it through this year if it kills me
I was curious why this is 18 pages then I remembered the alt-right and MRA of our current bully-ass government which makes intimidation and harassment a-ok.

Male fragility in action. Can't let women just enjoy watching a movie with other women without wanting to butt in.

Hard to believe anyone's still talking about this. Come on, GAF. 18 pages?

(However, I've no idea if Stephen Miller in the post above is anyone of note, but what a pathetic specimen)

Are these showings distinctly marked in the ticketing section on the site? My cousin wants his bachelors party to be a three-day Austin Drafthouse movie marathon, and I don't want to be a dumbass who shows up from Canada with a stack of tickets for a women-only showing.

I foolishly decided to read some of the replies. The obtuseness of the men (and some women, to be sure) supporting this is astounding. All "Rah rah" and "Fuck yeah" over the adult equivalent of a child throwing a tantrum over not being invited to a birthday party.

Yup. They clearly mark which screenings are for the women only events.

Yes, they're marked- the women-exclusive showing is called "Wonder Woman for Wonder Women."

This does not affect me in the least, but I think it's a silly business decision to essentially turn away (and offend?) half of their potential customers on that day.

When I heard about the event, I thought "oh that seems fun and clever." Then I heard about the backlash and couldn't believe it. What a bunch of pathetic babies. Just makes women want to be around men even less. These idiots.

This "controversy" has probably netted them more eyeballs and interest than just showing the movie.

The irrational hated people seems to have about this was funny at first, but now I'm just hoping some psychopath doesn't cause violence at one of these.

It's a fucking women's night. Who fucking cares. Anyone crying over this can always go watch it at another theater or even *gasp* a different showtime.

This thread got sanctimonious real quick. It switched from men whining because they can't go to a single movie theater in Austin on a Tuesday evening for a particular screening of Wonder Woman. From there it morphed into people lecturing about how women engaging in these events are really hurting feminism because optics™ and there are more important political things on the table they should be doing instead. Because no one is allowed to see a fucking movie anymore. Yikes.

At least they are transparent enough that I can see through their bullshit concern trolling and see the real issue but yeah I agree.

We have an Alamo draft house here in Phoenix. I'm gonna have to check it out I suppose. I've always heard good things.

Yes, I do agree with that. But as a business, you try not to make decisions that could potentially offend a large percentage of your audience. This doesn't offend me in the least, but clearly it has other people.
