The real kicker is that all those kinds of threads can immediately be closed by the very resounding, empirical answer of "No."

That is really quite depressing considering the Cannes film festival thread didn't even get to page 2.

Gaf really isn't a good place to discuss cinema unless you are interested in superheroes, Star Wars or Nolan.

The movie thread has great discussion about all that sort of stuff dude

Remember: There are people here who actually think MCU movies are better representatives of the film medium than Moonlight.

But back to the matter at hand, this summer is looking to be as bland as the previous one, so I actually do hope WW stands out somehow, especially with its subpar predecessors.

The GAF pecking order is:

DCEU >= Star Wars > MCU > Everything else in terms of generating conversation based on what I have seen.

Thor 2 World is the most trashed on, and polled movie in GAF history. Seriously I don't think there is a movie thread without someone mentioning Thor 2 World.

The Logan/Guardians/WW combo is one to give as an example of how much variety can be had in the CBM spectrum and how the whole "fatigue" argument doesn't hold up when the genre label could be applied to almost anything.

How? Baby Driver is apparently the strongest Edgar Wright movie yet, War of the Apes, Dunkirk, Logan Lucky

All of that looks so good. Better than anything last summer (for big movies) surely.

How many GAF members get to go to Cannes? Those are basically a lot of films where all we can say is "yep. Looks good" for the next few months. And that's ignoring the audience size differences between art films and blockbusters.

What will really blow your mind is that this is a gaming forum, where everything from climate change to famine is lumped together with Star Wars, Nolan and superheroes in a Offtopic section.

I think everyone in Israel is waiting for the movie to see Gal Gadot. It's actually a really big deal here, for an Israeli to star in such a high-profile Hollywood movie. I'm going to the screening on May 31.

It's evening now in TLV, and this is written in Azrieli Towers. From right to left: "We're proud of you Gal Gadot, our very own Wonder Woman"

Realistically it reflects the audience size for these movies. Hollywood blockbusters naturally draw a larger audience than what's shown at Cannes. It is what it is.

That said, I'd sacrifice all these comic book movies in a volcano to see Lynne Ramsay's new movie with Joaquin Phoenix.

1.) I've been a big Nolan fan, but I'm not feeling Dunkirk at all. Somethin' ain't right for me
2.) Fuck me, Baby Driver is next month? Well shit.
3.) Apes is mid-July - that's an eternity for me. Also I'm working on the OT, so need to figure that one out.

Some months earlier
Say whatever you want about the quality of the MCU as a whole but I can think of at least 3 MCU movies that are better put together and a bigger accomplishment than Moonlight. I know some MCU films have gotten some recognition for their technical achievements tho so it's not like the Academy hates them.

But since these films are under the superhero veneer, most of the Hollywood elite disregard them as nothing but mainstream schlock. Also, Marvel is so big right now, a lot of people probably don't think they warrant any additional attention. You have to remember that the Oscars are about promotion as much as anything else, so a lot of people are going to vote for the films the audience SHOULD be watching rather than telling them about the relative qualities of films they've already seen.

Keep that in mind.

Film as a whole is represented by a wide variety of genres, but I think it is better represented by movies that engage the viewer emotionally.

To get things back to discussing reviews, maybe:

Gadot's Diana is stunningly beautiful and filled with a quiet, unwavering strength. What makes her so endearing is that she is absolutely unaware of just how beautiful she is. This isn't to be mistaken for naivety, though the world of mortal man is somewhat bewildering to her. Instead, Diana shoulders the burden of learning about the tragedies of The Great War with grace and a determination to make things better.

There is never a moment where Diana's beauty or womanhood is used as a plot device. Sure, characters comment on how drop-dead gorgeous she is, but it never puts her at an advantage. Instead, her unwavering conviction is the main driving force of the plot. Even when Diana is inevitably confronted with a situation where she's dismissed as ”just a girl" with nothing meaningful to contribute, she deftly proves the doubters wrong. Most importantly, she does so without malice

Going to need the receipts on that one. People praise and defenf his cut because they believe it gets way too much shit. Not because it's some masterpiece of film. Except maybe Bleepey

You don't need receipts on people claiming BVS is some master class of film making. You know it's happened. Lol don't be that guy.

I'm just gonna hope for a better score than Alien Covenant

Because this is almost certainly a better movie than Alien Covenant

And I haven't even watched it yet

I do? What else do I know? I mentioned Bleepey because it's the only one I remember. I definitely don't remember anyone comparing it to Moonlight

I'm really happy this its looking like this movie will be great, but I REALLY hope is that JL turns out to be at least decent. That would make me ecstatic.

I'm hoping that they learned some lessons from the BvS situation.
