Sony X800D well - reviewed, 4k+HDR TV with low input lag

I'm getting a lot of banding in Gravity Rush 2 and Persona 5 on this TV. Is there anything I can do about that? Ive had it for half a year but I think I'm just noticing it now because there's a lot of large sections of flat colour in these two games.

Everything seems to be matching up correctly in terms of settings (full colour space in game and full colour space on tv, etc)

Make sure you have smoothness and clearness set to off.

Also know that all VA based panels will have a little bit of color smearing (or banding as you call it). That's why OLED's are godlike. Next to instantaneous pixel response times.

This TV averages about 12ms. Which is pretty damn good for a VA panel.

Only TN, OLED, and CRT TV's have fast enough pixel response times (sub 5ms) to where banding won't be noticeable.

PS: Reponse times does not mean input lag.

I've used a lot of different Android devices and haven't seen an interface this slow. Still, everything else on the TV is great, I'm glad I bought it.

Believe me, other OS are not necessarily better. Tizen on the KS8000 is ten times buggier than this. This is just slow, but that is because Android TV is not optimized for TV. This new update fixed a lot of what made the OS poor prior. Popup displays, smaller boxes, but there is still too much going on, and it seems like the os isn't properly developed for each model. They released it for like 6 models at once. Hopefully they can smooth some of this out.

Android is a POS. I'm never buying anything with Android ever again.

WebOS is better. But this is easily better than Samsung OS. The only thing Samsung OS has over this is flashy UI. But it is a buggy piece of crap barely supported. Android TV has more utility. This is honestly on Sony. They need to fix this update and tweak it to be faster, less memory leaking, maybe get rid of some of the bloatware that runs. I have disabled a lot of crap, turned permissions and notifications and things off.

The apps is what really saves it.

Hey man! Yeah, I did a standard reset and factory reset. Didn't help. Tried reinstalling drivers, DDU, etc. Wasn't helping at all. Then when I'd try to install the latest NVIDIA driver, it'd crash and then Windows wouldn't boot unless in safe mode. LOL What finally worked is after doing DDU, d/l'ing the NVIDIA driver via Windows Update, which was from a couple months ago. After that, everything was back to normal. HDR on my PS4 Pro also seems to be behaving correctly now, even though I didn't change anything. So bizarre, but for now, everything seems to be working. Whew! :)

Yeah, crazy, after windows 10 update my PC worked fine for a few hours then just lost picture and I couldn't get it back. Had to use DDU as well and reinstall the drivers, that worked, but now I've had some occasional black flickering when playing games at 4k.

Also, on PC, everything seems to be set to limited instead of RGB no matter resolution or Hz, changing between the two in Nvidia control panel changes nothing, and I know for a fact that wasn't the case before the update. Picture is definitely set to limited now with no ability to change it. (x900e)

rtings says the Smooth Gradation settings can help with banding, they were talking about TV viewing and not gaming, but it's worth trying

So I stated a few months back that I felt the cable that goes into the back of the tv was loose. When the guys repaired my set they took off that piece. The power cable is supposed to move around like that. It is just a holder for the cable. The cable has a lot of slack and there is a white connector further in.

A question for those with NA X800D sets. If you go to menus and try to rename your tv. How does Google acknowledge the device? My tv now says Bravia 4K GB. I swore it used to say Bravia 4K TV. But maybe I am wrong?

I disabled a bunch of apps (why is a car game installed by default and why is it always running in the background?) and all the stupid recommendations (home screen now says "No recommendations available at this time") and now my TV is a lot more responsive.

Does anyone use Amazon prime video?

All of a sudden hdr content is really dark and looks like it has a sepia filter over it. Goliath is the worst offender.

I've checked all the picture settings and nothing fixes it.

Are these maybe dolby vision rather than hdr 10? Would that have any effect?

The hand tour is the only one that looks normal but it's still considerably darker than it used to be.

How do you disable apps?

Oh, I see. I disabled Asphalt Nitro.

No. Like you, I started noticing it sometime back as well with dark areas in Nier. Seems to be normal going by the replies I've gathered on AVS forum. I guess some people are just more sensitive to it than other people are.

Just noticed the a1e series is out

Only tv I will buy to replace this one

Will wait for 75 inch and black Friday though hopefully get it for sub 4000 at that time

Home > Settings > Apps

Home > Settings > Home Screen > Recommendations row and disable everything.

Now I can't see how to get app icons back. I have Netflix installed but once I took off that recommended row, everything is gone.

I truly despise android tv...

Maybe I misunderstood you but nuking the recommendations shouldn't affect the featured apps and app rows.

I force closed Sony shelf hoping it would leave me with only what I have installed and get rid of a bunch of useless icons.

Looks like that was a bad idea as you lose have your icons.

Guess I have to deal with bullshit ads on my tv because google. :(

Oops, just restarting the TV should fix that hopefully.

As for ads, do you have the US model? I have no ads anywhere.

How are you having all this trouble lol. Only ad I've ever seen was from Es file explorer and I uninstalled it instantly. My tv is also responsive and quick.

Rebooting did bring it back once I re-enabled notifications.

The ads I'm talking about are things like "google play games", "photo sharing plus", "directv ready", "PlayStation video", etc. I didn't install those and I don't want those icons on my screen.

Any way to get rid of them without nuking my installed apps?

I'm in the same boat, i'm still on my 55W905 and honestly i still love it. But i'm itching to jump into HDR and getting a scorpio or Pro this fall. Gazza, seems like it's been a worthwhile upgrade for you?

I upgraded to an X900E from a W905A and I can tell you the X900E is superior in almost every way. My X900E has better blacks, can get brighter and has zero uniformity issues. Motion performance is about the same, maybe a little bit better which was disappointing as this was one of the reasons I decided to go with the X900E over the X930E.

The only thing the W900A beats the X900E in is input lag. I noticed it right away but after 3 days or so I have completely adapted. If you aren't sensitive to input lag and really want to get into 4K/HDR, get this TV. Otherwise I would wait next year for the HDMI 2.1 TVs as the W900A is still a very good 1080p performer.

That is just part and parcel of Android TV. They are not ads. And you have to go to Apps, and then the ones you hate, click force stop and disable or clear data. Some you can't get rid of like Playstation Video because of Sony. Just like you can't get rid of certai apps on Tizen and LG WebOS. But Android TV gives you more control over everything than any other television os. I have turned off all notifications, revoked most permissions, disabled all non essential apps. Turned off all discover crap, hidden all recommendations.

If you are doing settings, can you check the rename feature for me. Don't rename but click change and see what Google says your tv is. Does it say rename your 4K Bravia TV or 4K Bravia GB.

Does anyone know why I can't select a higher output color depth, RGB, and Full range when outputting a 4K res? PS4 and XBOX One can do it just fine. I'm able to use/see these settings when I lower the resolution.

EDIT: Nevermind! I somehow was using an old HDMI cord! Switched it with a different one and everything is good now!

Oh those. I wouldn't call them ads but I disabled a few of them. Frankly now that my TV is finally running smoothly I am quitting while I am ahead.

Just an FXI. I tried my 8bitdo controller with this TV and it worked just fine on the latest firmware. It's great for using Retroarch for Android all built into the TV.

I did have to map a return to retroarch menu button to the controller's power button.

Thanks for the responses guys. All my settings look correct so I guess it's just how the TV is.

It's only really noticeable if the whole screen is taken up by a single colour, so it's not too bad.

I'm finally saying goodbye to my 10 year old Toshiba 42z3030d, it has served me very well.

Moving onto the 43X800D, should be getting it on Saturday. Only have Xbox One S to hook into it but after E3 I'll see what Sony are doing with PS4 Pro, definitely want to grab one so I can play Detroit. I will have to catch up on the thread for calibrations and tips, any pointers will be much appreciated.

Can't wait to join the club.

Was meaning to post a couple weeks ago about this but didn't get a chance.

Upgrading my Win10 to the creators update messed up my display big time. Issue being that the drivers did weird things with the TV. Also the new updated introduces HDR to the desktop. Why?

So.... this is what happened. After Win10 updated a few times it finally went to a black screen. Thinking it was hanging i left it for the day and coming back to the same black screen i figured Win took a dump. Restarted and came into win that looked all messed up. Not knowing what that was all about, restarted back to a black screen. After a few reinstalls, updating my drivers to the latest ones made my desktop go back to that weird ass colors and on restart it would go to a black screen.

Solution? Uplug the tv and plug it back on the HDMI and it would recognize it.

Getting rid of the HDR and weird display it was doing? Set in my NVidias control panel to

RGB 8bpc Full dynamc range.

I have yet to try a game that uses HDR, but i don't think it will be taking the advantages of the 10bcp or 12bcp that i had set previously. Maybe i'll try to run RE7 and see how it looks.

Anyone else had this issue upon installing windows new update?

I Know this has been asked before but I have the 43" version and due to the peculiar 100mm(w) x 200mm(h) VESA holes I am struggling to find a suitable wall mount for the TV.

Are there any particular brands or wall mounts that you have used successfully or am i just left with the option of SONY SUWL450?

The nougat update for the UK XD80s will be rolling out in waves starting tomorrow, or you can install via USB as of tomorrow.

I just picked up Mass Effect, and the HDR is completely broken. Can use YcbCR420 at 10BIT For HDR at all. Screen turns greenish. Can only have it at RGB with no HDR for it to even be playable. Shadow Warrior 2 has been broken for me as well.

Bingo. Its broken all around. You have to be in at least 10bit HDR, but its not working properly with the current drivers.

Been playing with HLG HDR and it actually can make some games look way better. It correctly deals with skies and makes it so you can see through windows while indoors. It even helps bring out some detail lost in bright highlights. I recommend booting up Assassin's Creed Unity to see what I mean.

Just messing around, and I super know that it isn't correct or "right". I just think it's really interesting as it helps paint a picture of what HDR can do for whatever you try it on.

Edit: Seriously. I just tried GTA V and HLG makes the clouds look nice and the stained glass windows of Michael's front door actually visible. Y'all should give it a look.

Has the Twitch app ever freeze the TV for y'all? It's happened twice.

It didn't freeze before latest update. I also can not get picture on auto and have to keep it at source or I can't see anything. Hopefully Sony fixes these issues. But they have always been shit with software and updates. It is why each set got this giant update rather than customized for each set.

Has this been pushed to the X80? If so then I hope TV stations start using it to broadcast with too.

So be honest people: Do you think this will be the best Bang-For-Buck 43-Inch 4K TV in the UK by the time Scorpio rolls around or should I wait to see what else comes?

The price tag is looking like £630-ish so far and I'm willing to cap out at £650 or £700.

Price seems to bounce around, I got mine for £521 in December from Tesco Direct (they no longer stock it though apparently).

I'm bummed that I cannot get it. Zero chance to get it at my territory. :-/

I have to wait a year for successor of XE80 [as usual it will start with 1000-1100€ price] and hope it will be good [at least it will have HDMI 2.1 and hopefully VRR]. :-/
