FT: EU and China strengthen climate ties to counter US retreat

the most infuriating thing is this isn't the choice of most americans, its a product of our fucked up political system which gives more power to people who are idiots. We're not a true democracy and the flaws are dooming us.

The USA economy is so fucked. The next recession is going to be a killer

Yeah I base this on nothing more than my feelings and reading news coverage about technology... but it feels like we've turned a corner on the fight for climate change.

It's still early and we're still mostly fucked; but literally, the entire world except the GOP (and Nicaragua and Syria) has decided that we need to do something about climate change.

Renewable energy is like 5 years away from being completely mainstream. And the US will be left behind...

Nicaragua isn't in it because it wants more action and views paris as too weak.

Syria because they're in the middle of civil war.

Literally we are the only climate denying country.

Canada getting in on this?

Good job, EU and China! Saving the planet!

Well they're trying anyway. Unfortunately, the amount they would have to cut to counter the U.S. increasing pollution will be very difficult if not impossible. After all, the EU and China still have their economies to think about and will continue to pollute as well, even if not as much.

Trump is going to point to this as a win. He's basically holding the planet to hostage and it's sickening.

"We'll deny climate change is real and just do what we want, and the rest of the world is going to have to pick up the slack. So we won't have to shoulder the cost of fighting climate change! MAGA."

I hope the rest of the world sanction the shit out of the US.

China can't do that without crippling themselves. They won't do it.

Even if you've purged Trump, Americans might just vote a worse-Trump within a decade.

If people didn't learn their lesson from Bush, I'm not confident they would learn it from Trump.... Or at the very least, the lesson would quickly be forgotten.

That was just the baby boomers doubling down. Trust me when I say the youth in this nation have wised up and are taking a much deeper interest in politics.

And we haven't even seen consequences happened to Trump yet. Bush had an economic crash, but it happened too late to really affect how he's viewed. Imagine if the rest of the world isolates the US in trade and policies and tells them to go pound sand, kicking out their troops and such.

As a US citizen, I would support teaching the ignorant that the US cannot do it alone. Companies and Corporations cannot run the show.

How can the President justify ignoring every science authority in the country. Trump's piss-poor leadership that runs in the opposite direction of all evidence really is one for the history books. If we can make it long enough to put out an edition on his foibles.

It's not just the president though, it's the whole party that gets support from half the country.

The Stubbornness to accept reality will literally kill a lot of people in the future.

I'm seriously thinking of just teaching chinese to my children as a 2nd language. Might be useful in a future business world.

China is so ready to take over the position of the US on the world stage.

Make America Great Again couldn't be a more hollow slogan.

quoted for truthness. And here's the kicker: analysts are expecting the next recession to pop off within the next months as the morgage bubble is already back to it's 2008 pre-collapse status. The next recession's going to be on Trump's watch. Imagine the size of that L. Just picture it.

US already shot themselves in the foot if thats his thinking. The new economy will belong to China and the EU, and they'll reap the rewards

It won't be as good as you think because they would fucking blame it on Obamacare

I would like to take a moment here to quote myself from the "Merkel said the US and UK are not reliable partners any more" thread:

me said:
Saying that Europeans are going to give up the US for China is a real stretch, but you can bet your ass they're going to make a big show of joint environmental initiatives at the very least, especially if Trump pulls out of the Paris agreement.
I think I'm either a genius or this was extremely predictable and Trump is giving up any possible form of leadership or credibility on this issue.

Said it about Australia, push comes to shove with Trump, a few people might end up shocked to find Australia starts leaning more toward China. That Europe is leaning more toward China doesn't really surprise me.

China is following Trump around and mopping up on all the dropped issues to win favour. More and more I suspect the US is going to have a lot of cleaning up to do when the next Government moves in repairing relationships with foreign countries.

Win-win for Europe and Asia, really. The chance to upend one of the major pillars of the American economy while letting the US export them a finite resource in the short term.

Just because Trump lives in the 80s doesn't mean the rest of the world is. The American and Saudi Arabia axis is a losing proposition in the long run.

While I am not the biggest fan of china on a lot of political fronts, I will admit they have been very good on the subject of climate change lately. This is positive news and I hope these kind of agreements will lead to america getting less influence on global politics.
