The Verge w/ Phil Spencer: "PS4 Pro is a Xbox One S competitor, not true 4K system."

40% ?
By then new CPU's will be out so I'd guess a lot more than 40%.

Yep; a (ry)zen-based APU will be significantly (like, a lot) more powerful than the (boosted) Jaguars. Wouldnt surprise me if we`ll see something 3 to 6 times the performance per watt.

If you go by DF, there is a big difference between the 1440p games on PS4 Pro, and checkerboard 2160p games like Horizon.

So even if a game like AC Origins isn't native 4K on XOX, it could still look quite a bit better than the Pro version.

Yeah, but I recall reading that the 1440p/2160p difference is less jarring than for example, 720p or 900p compared to full 1080p.

And yet most impressive games were on ps4(pro). Get some good developers phil ...

I'm day one for Xbox X I love tech. But I don't think anybody will see much differences.
1st party PS4 will be better looking as devs are better.
3rd party will be 1800-2160 cb vs native 4k
I honestly don't see any difference.
Wipeout looks the same. Games like Titanfall or horizon are crystal clear and looks native. 99,9% of people won't see anything. And I'm playing on a 65" oled very close from the tv.

I have my PC and second Pro hooked up to the same 4K monitor (a Wasabi Mango) and even at 3-feet away it's hard to spot any difference between native 4K and checkerboard 4K. You have to know what to look for, and even then it's nothing the average consumer will ever care about.

“I do think we have an opportunity to get better in first-party and to grow,” says Spencer. “We've got great support from the company to go do that.”

Hopefully they do go out and do that.

I'd be in the dick
This is going to bite them in the ass once we get games under native 4k on the Xbox One X.

Talking shit about reconstruction techniques is also weird since their own documentation for the console recommends them for certain situations

Can't wait for the eventual.... "But why are all the 4K games only 30 FPS? THIS IS BULLSHIT!!"

God... what a glorious day that will be on GAF.

Well that's not true at all..

The Division is native 4K on PS4 Pro, with enhanced. Shadows and reflections and it's one of the best looking games in existence. Let a lone open world.

(Which reminds me, where the hell is the DF video on that? It's an amazing achievement, would love to see an analysis.)
Nothing I've seen says it's 2160p.

The X is closer to the PS4 Pro than the original Xbox One is to the PS4 percentagewise.

Ummm.... No?

1.31 is 71.12% of 1.84.
4.2 is 70.00% of 6.

Unless you're using common core new math I guess?

Depends on the size of the display.

The difference between 4K and 1440p is like 4.5 million pixels. That's twice as many pixels as a 720p and 900p display combined.

So the difference is massive, but the ability to perceive the detail gained is diminished unless the display is a lot bigger.

...

I do feel genuine respect that MS really are firing with all guns blazing, but for me it's simply not enough. It's too late.

I don't feel like MS is coming out guns blazing at all. For that to really happen they need a bunch of exclusive GAMES to show off the X1X.
And I've seen no multiplat game that I wouldn't be perfectly satisfied playing on the Pro on my 60" KS8000 rather than the X1X version of it.

and an Xbox One X is a general consumer competitor with that price point for that shit CPU

What you getting at here Phil? You scared it won't sell?

You only say something like this if you believe the masses care about "true 4K". The majority of people don't even move from the default picture settings on their new TVs.

I agree with you, first party titles on the Pro will continue to rule the visuals field after the XBX release as well, they got the budget and the talent and that's more important than ~30% more power.

Random rhetorical question that will be ignored...but why do so many people read one thread title...have an immediate emotional reaction...and then post a badly thought out one-liner along the lines of "Gah! Drunk!", "Gah! Liar!" etc.

Are they doing it to make themselves feel better? or because they think they've seen some hidden truth and no-one else has so they need to tell the world? or some other reason...

This behaviour exists in every internet forum on pretty much every topic....there must be some deep-rooted driver of it.

Because most people dont take it seriously.

The PS4 Pro competes with the S on price, but that's it. In every measurable way the PS4 Pro is the far superior console, and unless you need a 4K Bluray player - the best value as well.

The PS4 Pro competes with the X in every other way. PS4 Pro has the price advantage, XB1X has the horsepower advantage.

The PRO is $399 and given the XbOX $499 pricing, I'm sure Sony feels no compulsion to drop the price. Even still, the PRO and Xbox slim as currently priced do not compete on price. The PRO is $399 and the XBox One slim commonly $249-$299 depending on included HDD size and game.

At the higher end, PS4 Pro has the price advantage on the XbOX while as you say offering less power, but also doesn't have the 4k player. Ps4 has the first party lineup, the XbOX is positioning itself as the best( technical-wise) place to play your AAA third party stuff. The value proposition will vary from one prospective buyer to the next.

yeah thats correct, but I believe the quote I'm referring to accounted for scaling, 1440p scales much better to 2160; its its basically the step between 1080p and 2160.

WTF?! What an arrogant thing to say. Xbox S can't even run games in 1080p. I guess shitty Microsoft is back. There go hopes that they would try to combat Sony as a market leader...

Whilst I think the Xbox One X looks like an awesome piece of tech, I feel they would have been better suited to doubling down on the Xbox One S for now. The hardware at the moment really isn't what is holding them back, so releasing another model just seems misguided. I feel they would have been better holding the X back a year, and market it as more of a generational leap.

Microsoft's PR site says they will put the 4K label on games that meet the following criteria:

https://news.xbox.com/2017/06/11/new-packaging-icons-xbox/

Ha! So there's the truth.

Native 4k, dynamic 4k, other techniques... MS is going to advertise it all as 4k. Because it's only convenient to say something isn't "real 4k" when you're trying to drive home marketing buzzwords. Good to know. These are exactly the same as Sony uses. Theoretically, the X will hit native 4k more often, but they're already laying out the fine print. A conclusion that should be obvious to anyone who actually pays attention to the tech and isn't trying to fight a fanboy war.

in terms of specs he's correct, will devs show that massive difference? we will see

There is no massive difference. If anyone thinks xbox one x is going to blow away Ps4 Pro they are going to be sorely disappointed.

The Multi platform developers will not want to alienate their other fanbase too much so while I think there will be some differences it will not be a major gulf. The first party games will be the ones that shine on the consoles and frankly I trust that Playstation's first party developers will do that better.

Odd comment to make, must be talking about the price. Nothing new here though, xyz company gonna PR.

He kinda did, he responded to the question:

"Are you not worried about being $100 more expensive than the PS4 Pro?"

My take is that he answered a specific question and is talking about the + $100 price setting compared to Pro, and then went on to explain why $499 is justified, but every one jump on The Verge's clickbait-title like the quotation is something he announced on stage.

I admit I raised my eyebrowse too when I read it, but after reading the full interview I can't say Im taking it that serious, like most people in here seems to do.

Man this 4K marketing around One X is getting kinda icky.

Esp that shot from the MS site of what "4K" actually means. Like, how can you call it 4K if it's dynamic resolution, as in, the resolution changes, as in, not 4K (all the time).

He's over his skis a bit to call anything they're doing "True 4K' esp when he should probably be caveating that statement every single time with *for first parties, because I highly doubt we're gonna see native 4K on all third party stuff.

I like you a lot Phil, but acting like the One X and Pro aren't competitors is kinda crazy. You can say that as much as you want, but your customers already see them as direct competitors.
