Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

do you guys know
if the budget for this game is bigger than CSOTN?

I honestly would have not minded a completely 2D (with minor 3d elements ) like SOTN
if that would have been the case , would the game be complete already or no?

Uh, 2D is still a lot of work, and it depends on how you do it, how much you care about quality, etc. Maybe if they only used ugly Flash-style "puppet" animation it could go faster? But it'd probably look bad.

And remember than the PSone an DS Castlevanias were recycling sprites (and probably enemy behaviors) going all the way back to 1993. They have to make all of that from scratch now.

This is also a big game, and big games need a lot of pre-production work, concepting out all the monsters, environments, setpieces, etc.

Where the heck did I get Deep Silver from? Lol.

Deep Silver registered the trademark when the campaign launched, which people found in the public record.

They never actually announced that they were publishing it. But everyone just kind of assumed that was happening based on the trademark and the publishing deal for Mighty No. 9, which was also represented by Ben Judd / DDM.

I don't know the details, but I guess in the intervening time they negotiated a better deal with 505 Games and now they're the publisher.

I'd actually expect they're going to be pretty quiet until E3.

505's meeting room has a pretty large Bloodstained section in it.

I specifically meant there'll be more press from journalists who talked to him at Bitsummit; I know at least a couple were able to snag an interview, it's just a matter of waiting for them to return home and/or transcribe anything.

Based on the little Japanese press I've seen from him out of Bitsummit, I don't think he'll have much new to say, but he did say their reveals are planned around E3 and other western events because that's where the backers are.

So is Inti still working on this? The latest update mentions Dico, and I don't know if I've heard of them before. I've only been following the KS updates though, so maybe it's been mentioned in an interview or something?

Does it? Damn have I become so hard to please? :/ Besides graphics, I've also found the MC's animation to be quite floaty and the boss reveal a bit bland? Must be just me. Can't wait to scratch that itch though.

Don't worry it's not just you. Having played every GBA/DS Castlevania I was sure looking forward to the idea of this thing, but execution is just nowhere in the same galaxy.

Did anyone else who backed the game get an email from Fangamer about a tshirt offer? It's saying "Sold out" when I pick my size. Lame.

Thanks for the heads up; I wouldn't have noticed.

If it helps, there is this text on the order page:

If your size is sold out, don’t worry—we’re putting a second backer-only run into production right now! Sign up to receive one e-mail when your size is available again. (You’ll still get your backer discount.)

Man, I would have been more tempted if it wasn't for the price. Just a tad too high for my blood, even with the discount. Call me cheap!

I want one of the shirts too, but I don't feel like risking having to pay just as much as the shirt on import duties.

Man, I want to like this game. I really do. A new quality IGAvania would be awesome...

But I just can't get excited for this. I know this is a Kickstarter project and I should have my expectations in check, but I just don't find the overall production appealing, be it the visuals or the audio. It all looks and sounds incredibly bland to me. But the worst offense is the gameplay: why does it look so painfully slow and floaty and boring to me? Maybe it's because it's in 3D, or because the trailers and gameplay sessions we've seen are not representative of the game, but I don't know... IGAvanias have always had more oomph than this, haven't they?

Nope. They felt and played exactly like this.

I think it's fair to say that in some things haven't translated over perfectly well in the move to a 3D engine. I think a few tweaks to the character movement, speed, and animations would go a long way. It's a year out though, I'm sure everything will be nicely polished up by the end, based on how things have progressed so far.

I'm suspecting the 3D engine (or the way it's being used anyway) might be a culprit there, yet. It just feels different.

About the bolded: that's the thing though. Everytime I hop back into this thread, sometimes months apart, I expect the game to be much more polished and promising as a result. Yet, everytime, I go "that's it?", like every improvement falls flat. If I'm honest, while I'm sure the improvements are there, I just don't notice them. It looks, sounds and feels as bland as it did when it was first unveiled. A more polished kind of bland, I guess, but bland nonetheless.

Trying to replicate the feel of a 2D game in a 2.5D engine has always seemed like a daunting task to me. If Bloodstained even gets close to achieving its goal, then I'll be impressed.

For now I completely understand why people aren't that excited. In a way, the gameplay is exactly the same but you can't just pull off a 100% translation of the experience of 2D. There will be sacrifices, and in the end I just hope the product delivers as much as possible on the vision of its creative team.

Jepenese and Kickstarter just hasn't been a good match, I think this game will disappoint many fans. For those aching for an amazing Castlevania game, I highly recommend the recently released Castlevania The Lecarde Chronicles 2, it's not developed by Jepenese but it's definitely as good or better than all the DS castlevanias.

Wasn't this thread closed? Happy to see it was re-opened.

Can anyone hook us up with a link to an article giving their impressions to this game's E3 2017 demo? They took it to the convention but it was shown only to press with appointments, and not available to the general public like last year's so reading impressions has been difficult to find.

Also, knowing this is sort of a passion project, with IGA being able to develop the game unrestrained, makes me expect more of it. We've seen things like, say, Breath of the Wild going back to the roots of its series, and being massively praised as a result. A friend of mine whose favorite game is Ocarina of Time said BotW might even surpass it. Well, in much the same way, I've been expecting Bloodstained to reach the height of Symphony of the Night, or maybe Aria of Sorrow. My personal favorite is Circle of the Moon btw, I'm just weird lol.

Played this in AX last year, genuinely enjoyed it. Although the most exploitable mechanic I've used playing that game is a jump cancel attack where doing a series of mini jumps while attacking in midair increases your attack rate. Curious if the devs fixed that.

Why would it be "fixed"? Seems to be a fairly deliberate choice to allow that.

Thank you! I didn't even notice, I almost never bother with in-stock notices. They're always useless on sites like Amazon and such. Can't hurt to submit it and hope though.

Have you played CastleVania before?

Really hoping they make the E3 demo available to backers again. It was great to have a hands on last year, even if very early.

I still think the game is on track for my expectations of it, and actually looks rather good.
