Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Thread: Everyone wants it, no one uses it

Even though Microsoft published it Koei-Tecmo might be holding it up as they are seemingly uninterested in signing off on BC. There have been 0 Koei BC games and only 2 Tecmo published BC games (both externally developed indies) despite both being quite prolific on 360.

Koei Tecmo was after NG2

Perhaps Team Ninja's Yosuke Hayashi wants to prevent players from experiencing what many see as the superior version of Ninja Gaiden II - which wasn't produced by him. Who knows?

i'm kinda disappointed that no OG Xbox game was announced in the batch, though.

seems like it will be reeeally slow for them as most expected.

Why are some games like Mass Effect 2 and 3 disc only? I prefer digital, it's more convenient.

I doubt many copies of something like blazing angels exists in the world either, why make that BC when most people won't even be able to try it

Holy shit... VOOT AND Radiant Silvergun.

I'm running out of games to wish for!

I'm surprised they keep picking rather unpopular games instead of the most requested...

Don't make me smack you...

The most requested games are typically those that are easily available on multiple other systems and are in no real danger of being lost to time. The XBLA version of Radiant Silvergun is basically the only means of playing the game that doesn't involve a Japanese Saega Saturn and a $200+ trip to eBay. Priorities are correct.

What's interesting about all this is right before E3, Code Mystics (Phantom Dust HD) tweeted out a question asking people what game from the OG Xbox they should work on next (from what I remember, Metal Wolf Chaos of all games won by a landslide). So naturally that might lead you to believe they are working on OG Xbox BC as well, but that seems to be mostly internal from what we have heard, plus the work done in the footage we have seen of Crimson Skies is minimal compared to what we have seen from them previously.

So is MS planning on remastering (HD, Xbox Live) some games with Code Mystics while also releasing straight ports themselves?

I am pretty sure it's got nothing to do with that. There hasn't been a single Koei/Tecmo developed 360 BC game, not even Hayashi's NG3. If this continues it's safe to assume it's company policy to not sign off on 360 BC rights and that NG2 isn't going to happen.

It'd be good if they give games dependent on XBL the Phantom Dust treatment, and just release others as is. Maybe also do the same for games that would otherwise run into licensing issues (Sega had to pull Yappie Feet out of Jet Set Radio, so something similar for Jet Set Radio Future would be preferable to a single song preventing the game hitting BC).

That could be a possibility, since OG Xbox titles will have no LIVE functionality. I can see specific titles being picked to get "remastered" so to speak.

Would be really nice if these titles replace the original versions that get the greenlight to the program. Like, if Crimson Skies were to be fixed up by Code Mystics, that version would replace the barebones XBox port they currently have up.

Or, maybe Code Mystics has a hand in helping OG XBox emulation working?

Both of these are a longshot though.

How is Ubi releasing all the AC games on BC and still no sign of Splinter Cell: Blacklist?

And still no Max Payne 3?
Splinter Cell Blacklist was a big underperformer and the franchise isn't on the public radar as far as the rumored sequel right now

We have no idea if the Max Payne franchise will come back so that's also likely not big on the radar

I'd guess when it comes to AAA games, I'd baselessly speculate that the franchises with known sequel buzz in the air are more likely to be worked on

They're releasing the stuff I want, and skipping the stuff Etta wants as punishment for him being a dick about Daytona USA.

I feel bad for the rest of you that want Splinter Cell and Fable Anniversary... but you can blame him tbh.

I'm still waiting for The Darkness. You can get this atmospheric gem only on console and I would like to lend it to a friend who recently got an Xbox One.

Does anyone know if there are multiple versions of a backwards compatible games that can be downloaded? For example when a game is censored in Germany and I own an uncensored Austrian copy of the game. Will it download the censored version of the game based on the country I set up my XboxLive store account or will it scan the version of the actual disk?
Unless of course all backwards compatible titles only have one international version.

Can't find any explanation to it anwhere.

Edit: Nevermind, it's based on the disc region.

It doesn't hurt to shoot an email to the publisher and developer to get it on the program quicker. I send weekly emails to Koei-Tecmo in hopes that one day they'll actually start signing off BC games.

Just hit some friends up and group up to annoy Phil Spencer and Major Nelson till they cave in

Hey, it worked for BLOPS2. It just took an ungodly amount of time

Well at the very least Code Mystics is currently still involved with Phantom Dust HD updates, so who knows. Maybe their experience getting the game up and running without it's source code gave them some valuable information nd experience with the system, so it would be nice to see them work on other titles with issues like that.

This is a real shame. It's a console-only game, and it's also the superior version, so I would really be happy to have Ninja Gaiden II and Ninja Gaiden Black as BC.

Maybe they are planning a remaster? But yeah, it's about time they start releasing the SC games in BC.

You really want to get upset and confused? ME2 and ME3 are available digitally on XB1 through EA Access. Maybe there is a technical reason for that or maybe it's their sinister way to keep schlubs like me subscribed because I prefer digital as well.

Why does BC have to worry about licence issue? They are still old games just making it playable on new console through software emulation.

I'm betting BLOPS2 dropped on BC when Activision wanted it to, not in response to the nagging.

This isn't like BC from some generations where the 360 chipset was included in each X1. The games have to be emulated through software. Emulating the 360 on the X1 is difficult and the emulator has to be tailored for each game. Therefore, each BC game has to be converted into a downloadable XB1 package along with it's custom emulator. This means that every BC game can be considered a "release" on the XB1 platform. Since the original agreements and paperwork never mentioned the X1 or future consoles, it requires new paperwork and signatures from the publishers and any related rights-holders, such as musicians and car manufacturers. I'm sure it's a bit of a nightmare for many titles. In some cases, the game could be released but never actually sold digitally, but if so, that lessens it's appeal as a BC title because all this work costs money and it's helpful if MS and the pubs can make that back through new sales.

Because these games are being published on a new console not stated in the original publishing agreement.

In some cases, games can be published again without have a digital license purchase available. But Microsoft seems to want every digital game to be available to purchase as possible. Games that make this harder seem to be on a much lower priority.

So that means they can make NCAA football and basketball BC but not sell it digitally, I would be ok with that

Ubisoft has been pretty good at supporting BC, so there may be some specific issue holding up the SC games.

Talking about support; SEGA is at the top (behind MS, of course) when it comes this program. This is looking good for some of their OG titles making it (Gun Valkyrie and Panzer Dragoon Orta specifically).

Maybe the Tom Clancy's name license.

Capcom just make easy sales in no effort ports. Not surprised they don't bother. Suppose they could maybe do some of their catalog though.

Capcom is 7th on the list of most supported games (14), but most of those are XBLA titles. They also have a larger pool of titles to draw from than some of the companies lower on that list so percentage wise they are a lot lower.

Sega owns Atlus now, correct? They could prove their BC master spot by making P4A and P4AU BC then. God knows my xbone needs more fighters.

Ubi, Sega and Rockstar deserve props for actually giving a shit about BC. Capcom, on the other hand, has shown a lackluster amount of effort.

Nah SEGA is not off the hook until we have at least half this list:

Aliens V.S. Predator
Alpha Protocol
Anarchy Reigns
Armored Core: FA
Binary Domain
Chromehounds
The Club
Condemned 2: Bloodshot
Dreamcast Collection
Full Auto
Phantasy Star Universe
Resonance of Fate
Several Sonic games
Vanquish

Happy to see Radiant Silvergun. I never... figured out how to play it effectively, it's weird, and I'm looking forward to giving Virtual On a shot in the near future.
