The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

Because it's no longer 2008, and his Nostalgia Critic schtick wasn't any good even back then. Hell, the "critic with a gimmick" thing is super outdated by now.

Doug actually has a series called "Doug Reviews" where he reviews movies without the Nostalgia Critic persona. It doesn't get as many views.

Nostalgia Critic:
Wonder Woman - 334,000 and climbing
Transformers non-review - 555,000
Alien vs Predator - 782,000
Suicide Squad - 1,179,000
Flintstones 2 - 829,000
Clockstoppers - 739,000
Fan4stic - 1,079,000

Doug Reviews:
It Comes at Night - 96,000
Power Rangers - 276,000
Get Out - 114,000
Split - 191,000

Could also look at Sibling Rivalry (where Doug and Rob Walker team up to talk about movies):
Wonder Woman - 173,000
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - 180,000
Beauty and the Beast - 324,000
Logan - 194,000
Fifty Shades Darker - 251,000
Rogue One - 196,000

Doug seriously tried to get rid of Nostalgia Critic back when this thread was created in 2012, but Nostalgia Critic is the one that puts food on his table.

The way he tried to end it was never gonna work. You gotta ease people into new things. James did well with that, even if his main output is slower now

I did like his first review back the one with the kids but the skits early on was annoying and insufferable while now it is a lot more tolerable

The first clipless review probably would have gotten better recived if it weren't for the two week wait and if it wasn't a surprise i understand why does it but still

So it sounds like the Critic was completely accurate with his Transformers "non-review".
What a mess.

It's kind of weird that I know the Ben-Hur remake from last year was a thing, yet at the same time I don't think it exists. It's like Schrodinger's Movie.

it does make me wonder how people kept watching Transformers

A lot of people in China have shit taste. Probably due to their lack of internet.
But yeah, the reason these movies keep doing well is China and other overseas territories. The Last Knight underperformed here in the States but will do well due to other countries.

We had a thread on it one of the reasons going was that Spectacle provided by such movies are done the "best" by these american movies especially when HW can throw a budget of a country at it

I went to see TF5 after seeing some people online talk about it like a entertaining train wreck. Terrible, but entertaining for how bad it was.

It wasn't. It was the worst film I have ever seen.
Yeah, it was a pretty boring ass movie besides some things here and there.

Well, it was going to have a death, but the backlash to TF: The Movie caused them to change it to a "coma"... (even though he gets stabbed right in the heart so survival should've been impossible)

It was still a heck of a better way to go compared to
Cobra Commander

It's getting bad reviews here. When u asked my colleague for help buying the ticket (cause I hoped it would be an entertaining train wreck) she recommended I not go cause she heard it was bad

Cool to see that Doug has apparently accepted the inevitable and just shaved his head. It's gonna take a minute to get used to, but I think it was the smart way to go.

Channel Awesome side-show "Top 5" counts down the Top 5 NC Episodes, as voted by fans

Apparently the 10 year anniversary was yesterday the 3rd. Wow.

His direct, only occasional skits, reviews are still the best.

Also, OMG @ the Dove website they put on the cover:

http://www.dove.org/review/11724-norm-of-the-north/

My favorite part:
"Nudity: Woman in shorts."

Ah yes, the Dove Foundation.
Brad Jones is very familiar with them, especially since he added the recent trend of "Christ Exploitation" to his targets. Movies like God's Not Dead, War Room, Old Fashioned, Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas, essentially the entire PureFlix catalog, all of which get glowing reviews from them despite the terrible messages (and film making).

Brad saw enough of these that he produced a parody movie called "Jesus, Bro!", where an Atheist YouTuber nearly dies, meets Santa Christ, and tries to spread the word of Jesus. Surprisingly it has a way better message than anything from PureFlix. Dove then actually reviewed it, and they HATED it
Brad had fun with this review.

You say that likes its difficult to do, apparently a war movie made by Mel "pack of wolves" Gibson (his views probably changed) did a better job then them.
oh god

isn't norm on the north also recent
The Dvd is out at least if you're worried about clips and he did say it's something he did due to requests and was the 10th anniversary so he said why not

Norm of the North

Also, NC is 10 years old now. That's... wow

So I was thinking that the Rob Schneider "derp" joke they did in this review (joke performed by Tamara) was a South Park reference, and then I just watched the Tamara's Never Seen episode on Judge Dredd (1995) and Tamara did some more Rob Schneider derp jokes, paired with a couple of South Park screenshots, so yeah, it was really clearly a South Park reference.

I had no idea it had been 10 years. Crazy.

I guess with that and the top 5 video, what is everyone's favorite top 5 episodes?

For me, a lot of my favorite videos were for old films that I was nostalgic for (shocking, considering his name), so I really like the old reviews, like Godzilla, Blank Check, Casper, and so on. That's partially why I was so adamant that I wanted a review of the Prehysteria films because they are old, nostalgic for me, and utterly bad and bizarre; the third film is about the tiny dinosaurs helping to save a miniature golf course! But, for the more modern stuff, I did like the musical review of Moulin Rouge despite disagreeing with a lot of it, and The Room, which is extra amusing considering how many times it got taken down back when it was originally posted.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
I don't know how to rank them but my favorites, excluding special videos like top 11, commercials or old vs new, are the first two titanic reviews (the third one was funny but not as good), neverending story 2, moonwalker, the flubber/home alone 3 double whammy (I forgot if they aired in the same week), all of the shcwartznegger reviews in arnold month, alone in the dark, casper, ferngully, christmas tree, avatar, sharkboy and lavagirl, spy kids 3d, and the whole of sequel month.

I recall that Cats Don't Dance was one of the top 11 films that Doug mentioned he wouldn't review. Could be the reason for the editorial style. I remember watching it back then and I thought it was pretty good.

Edit: After watching the mini-review, the funny thing about Doug bringing up Tom, I always thought Danny looked a lot like an orange Tom. And the concept of using animals as an allegory for discrimination and prejudice does indeed seem to be used in that film, before it was practically handled straight on as the main premise for Zootopia (and showing that both kinds of parties are guilty of such). Really didn't consider it as such, when I watched Cats Don't Dance before, though it seems to be from a historical standpoint when minorities weren't given big roles in films.

The fact Doug checked out both Cats and Balto, man does it feel weird seeing such films and wondering if they still hold up.

Also apparently one of the reasons the film failed was because WB didn't advertise the film, upon buying Turner. Apparently they didn't want Cats Don't Dance to overshadow, of all things what many consider a Disney rip-off!

Quest for Camelot

And another bit of trivia: Cats Don't Dance was Lauren Faust's first job in the animation industry, when she was one of the animators for Sawyer.

I saw this in theaters and maaaan it really doesn't look good now.
HULK POODLE

I saw it in theaters too, and it was still terrible back then. It was very widely blasted, not just for the baffling directing choices, but... "And why does the CG look so shit? Professional Hollywood CG is supposed to look so much better than this."

I actually think it's CG is holding up relatively well (compared to other movies which used to inspire awe but now they look amateur, this has always looked amateur). It's not showing it's age, you just didn't notice it the first time and now you're seeing it for what it truly is.

Yet it's because of this film that we're not getting a solo Hulk movie anytime soon.

didnt we get one mcu hulk that had norton

Yes we did. And that was earlier into the MCU. And oddly, it's been almost a decade since the MCU was establish and yet for whatever reason Universal still carries the Hulk solo film rights.

And as for the 2003 Hulk, I remember having some enjoyment out of the film and then thinking "Can't believe I actually enjoyed that." The irony that the "Hulked Out" dogs scene was the first major scene there; it was absolutely ridiculous!

And yup, those scene transitions felt pretty out-of-place IMO, even if the film was based on a comic book.
