The Nostalgia Critic |OT| He Remembers It So You Don't Have To

Unpopular opinion and all, but I'd takes The Hulk over The Incredible Hulk. At least it tried to do something for a change, and it's more interesting then a lot of comic book films. The Incredible Hulk is not bad, but it's pretty blah in the grand scheme of things, and I don't actually hate The Hulk either.

Fun review though, I appreciated the lack of skits, and I do agree that the film is probably too melodramatic for its own good, but I still like it.

I still don't get the line 'He remembers it so you don't have to'

It refers to the nostalgia aka the past. He's reviewing shameful films from your childhood, or at least that used to be the case. The phrase had a lot more meaning when he started out anyway.

What's not to get? Don't bother wasting energy trying to recall the virtues and flaws of those popular and terrible movies from your childhood...he's got you covered and will do the work for you! Just give a watch.

But as soon as you watch it you've remembered it and you might have remembered it anyway even without prompting

This isn't a criticism of Doug specifically, but I'm disappointed that he did the same thing everyone who talks about this movie does, which is "this is boring, get to the violence". Compounded by having a sketch that, instead of mocking the commercialisation of the movie (which has a rich vein to tap into), basically just did "isn't men having feelings funny" sketch #45985.

I guess it's just because toxic masculinity is at the forefront of my mind right now, I know he's done it before.

Review was fine otherwise.

It's actually a nostalgic catchphrase. Back when many service industries were emerging, they used that kind of line to explain their services. Like... Kentucky Fried Chicken. "We do the cooking so you don't have to." Because at the time, home cooked meals were the overwhelming standard, and some creative entrepreneur proposed the idea that you could actually... hire... somebody else... to do an unpleasant job for you? What a novel concept!

Many people remember old TV shows and movies and form opinions about them. Nostalgia Critic is offering a service in that he can take over the job of remembering old TV shows and movies, and he can provide you with opinions about them (particularly the unpleasant ones).

Yes we did. And that was earlier into the MCU. And oddly, it's been almost a decade since the MCU was establish and yet for whatever reason Universal still carries the Hulk solo film rights.

Still, surprised it's canon.

...wait, Marvel doesn't have the license of Hulk film? The hell.

The service he provides isn't just in the recalling, but critically analyzing those memories. The strengths and weaknesses, often which nostalgia can cloud.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Rob mentioned two movies to be covered soon.
Monkeybone and Tom & Jerry in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
. Doug also posted a picture on Twitter holding the latter.

He might also be doing something with Corey Taylor of Stone Sour and (ugh) Slipknot fame.

Remember how long it took to get the rights to Spider-Man back? These licenses were in place years before Disney bought them.
I get that, I was just surprised they still don't have the rights since the last one had IM cameos, and iirc the general there was in CW. But I guess back then the MCU wasn't a thing.

Marvel is able to use the Hulk in many of their films that feature other characters, but Universal holds the distribution rights for solo Hulk films. Though it doesn't seem like it stops Marvel Studios from using characters that are mostly associated with the Hulk, as we saw when Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross appeared in the Incredible Hulk film, but he eventually appeared in Captain America: Civil War. And being reprised from the same actor no less, which in Thunderbolt Ross' case being William Hurt.

The Incredible Hulk did have the cameo of Tony Stark in that film's mid-credits scene, not to mention some footage of that film being shown near the end of Iron Man 2. And of course on film short that featured Phil Coulsin which acknowledged Abomination's capture and containment. Otherwise, it does seems a lot of things were pretty much forgotten and some plot holes, like the hook of Samuel Sterns turning into the Leader.

Granted that bit was pretty much resolved in an Avengers movie tie-in comic.

Oh boy, with a face like that, I do wonder if it's possible for him to consider that film worse than
Tom and Jerry: The Movie.

Update: Well the Channel Awesome Twitter has very much confirmed the next review:
Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka & the Chocalate Factory.

Aside from films released in theaters, that didn't really take very long after that film was released, granted it was released digitally about a month ago.

Update 2: Review is up.

Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

What a weird movie.
Animation all over the place and ugly. At least he acknowledged the final face was messed up.

Can't wait for Tom & Jerry and The Shining.

Wait, the review is an editorial? Interesting, it's pretty long compared to the Cats Can Dance too.

Well I actually decided to check out that Tom and Jerry Willy Wonka film. Yeah it's indeed pretty bad, though I consider it one of those "so bad, it's good" kind of films. Those facial animations are just flat out weird, though I do have some pros for it:

For one, the signature Tom and Jerry slapstick is still there, I will give it that. But sadly it very much distracts from the songs, notably the one where Charlie and Grandpa Joe sing together.

The tunnel scene is just as bizarre as the original 1971 version, especially given Tuffy is saying it.

Although can't be certain if this occurred in the book, but
Mr. Salt drags out Veruca by the ear and plans on punishing her after escaping the furnace.
Now I thought that was a truly awesome moment for a film that is otherwise not good. Don't think any version (not even the Johnny Depp one) showed
Mr. Salt truly standing up to his own spoiled daughter.

All in all, I wouldn't consider it the worst thing to happen in Tom and Jerry history (there is far worse like the Gene Deitch shorts and the movie where they talk), but indeed it was a purely unnecessary crossover.

Only other Tom and Jerry crossover movies I checked out was the one with Sherlock Holmes and that Nutcracker one on CN, IIRC. I just hate that Hanna-Barbera shows have been reduced to being involved in crossover films, such as those WWE ones.

And you know, the fact Doug is a huge Tom and Jerry fan, I'm surprised he never refers to the dog as "Spike," who was always a recurring character in the old cartoons.

the Scooby movies were good though

What era has Spike came around? Also the "leashed dog" is his son right, and iirc he's "mundane" so the joke of him being leashed unlike the other dogs works.

I believe Spike had appeared close to when Tom and Jerry became a thing. His first appearance was probably the first time Tom and Jerry worked together in fending off Spike (then called Butch).

And yup the leashed dog is Spike's son, Tyke.

holy crap, I know what episode of the Simpsons that picture is from.

It's Homie The Clown, & it's the scene when Homer is driving home while still dressed as Krusty & complaining about being a clown.

....edit: lol he actually figured it out later in the review.

Monkeybone is a weird-ass film and I'm not sure if I hate it, as much as it actively annoys me. It looks great, and it's actually got some creative visuals, but good god is Monkeybone the actual character like nails on a chalkboard. He's just that irritating.

Good video too, though I disagree with Doug on Fraser, he's a very charming goofball, and he works very well-around animated characters too, who's even given a few very good performances (Gods & Monsters for example)In Monkeybone I actually thought he believable with the animated characters, despite me not much caring for the film in general.

I imagine the editorials will reappear. Just needs to find subjects to talk about.
I do miss "Was That Real?" He could do failed pilots.

Some pics appeared on their Twitter hinting at future videos.
One will be a crossover with "Some Jerk with a Camera" (he reviews theme park rides at Disney and Universal)
Another will be something Nicolas Cage related.
Though they might be related.

The "crossover" might just be the fact he joined Doug & Rob for a Real Thoughts for The Haunted Mansion, which was rather interesting since they talked about some hilarious behind-the-scenes stuff, like why that Gummi Bears show was created & how the movie could've turned out different.

Doug's reaction to learning that some people would actually spread the ashes of loves ones on the Haunted Mansion ride (26:32) was great.

Yeah, it's a real issue on the ride

Hmm well I always thought that Webby acted and sounded like Mable. But I personally consider it a great step up from the original version.

Been loving the DT reboot in general!

David Tennant makes a great Scrooge McDuck!

Yeah I see plenty of potential in the DuckTales reboot. More than the new Spider-Man cartoon which looks like it's made on a budget of loose change.

Man the views Doug gets on YouTube are insane. The DuckTales video is only a couple days old and it's nearing 650k. This doesn't factor in the Vidme views.
And people say his show is dying...

A lot of his videos get to the millions and are on the trending page (though I heard that means nothing)
While he's probably not as popular people are just being ridiculous and some seem to want him to crash and burn

I already appreciate him for being not related to video games. Why that genre always spawned out terrible personalities is beyond me.

Depends, I don't find 95% if Doug's attempts to be funny anymore so in that way the comedy element of the show "died for me". Stuff like the dt reboot episode was great since it wasn't bogged down with any skits it actually felt like a classic episode, but I didn't really laugh at it. I just enjoyed Doug's take on the reboot which is very different from how I use to consume the show.

Is there any convenient way to watch this on mobile or do i have to wait for YouTube

I tried reading the book years ago. Thought it was boring. No surprise the movie ended up this way.
The most I remember is a RiffTrax comment.
"Huzzah! Welcome one and all to the Renaissance Festival!"
"Carolingian or Byzantine Renaissance?"
"I don't know. HUZZAH!"

On another note, they're doing a clipless review next month AND another theatrical premiere.
The new adaptation of Stephen King's It. Makes sense, he did review the original.
