The Naked Gun appreciation thread

Haven't watched these films in years, but watched Police Squad early last year and had a blast. Shame the series was so short, because it's absolutely hilarious. Really should rewatch the film's soon, but the blu-ray box here is a whopping €35!

Maybe Netflix has it 🤔

These movies plus Hot Shots 1 and 2 were my favorites as a kid. I still watch them once a year and they still hold up, for example last week I noticed that in the final scene of Naked Gun, before Frank tries to stop Jane from shooting, the extras keep changing in every cut.
Oh and the eggs moving on the fridge in Naked Gun 2 1/2! Such a good detail.
I miss this type of humor so much, thank god there's still the Lego series doing it.

I'm rather lazy in terms of posting on GAF, but I'll be damned if I miss out on expressing my appreciation for the Naked Gun!

This, together with Hot Shots 1 & 2 + Loaded Weapon always makes me laugh. :D

I've never got around to watching PS, but I've seen this clip and it's fucking genius.

You have to watch PS! They do variations on the joke every episode.

My favorite is the one where
the perp they caught wonders why every one freezes, escapes handcuffs and then escapes.

Glad that Police Squad is also getting recognition. When I discovered that show while nobody here in Germany knew about it, it was the best time surprising my friends with it.
Also don't forget "Top Secret!", it's from the same creative team, just as funny, but it often gets left out when people remember these movies.

The Naked Gun movies (and its ilk) are the best comedy movies for me. The humor per minute of running time ratio is huge. Its like every few seconds, there is a sight gag or quip leading up to a big punchline. Such an amazing written and directed movies.

I'd say Angie Tribeca's another does of Police Squad. A Touch Of Cloth is another dose of Naked Gun.

(In that Angie Tribeca's in 30-min installments, whereas A Touch Of Cloth - while also TV - is in the form of two-parters that end up about feature length)

Free tidbit from ATOC, when they're trying to find a juror in a hospital who may be in danger:

I love background sight gags. Classic.

One of the few movies I can watch and watch again and laugh like I've never seen them before. These were my type of comedies. New stuff barely gets a laugh from me.

Always find them hilarious. I miss Nielsen and these wacky comedies. As a kid in particular they're like gold dust of useful information.

God damnit GAF. I'm sitting here at my desk laughing uncontrollably because of this thread. So many good memories. I know what I'm doing this weekend!

Just realizing someone should make a version where the sign can say/be anything, to go along with his facial expression.

I love Rashida, but I don't think she quite gets it. Gotta play it straight / deadpan everything in this style of comedy. She tries, but can't help but giving it a little too much ham.

Rashida Jones brings charm to her roles but she can't pull off full-on comedy.

"Sorry about your loss. We would have been here sooner but your husband wasn't dead yet."

Forgot about that one.

I so desperately miss screwball humor in movies. Too much snark and cynicism in modern comedies. Discovering Wet Hot American Summer was a breath of fresh air.

"Jane, since I've met you, I've noticed things that I never knew were there before... birds singing, dew glistening on a newly formed leaf, stoplights."

"I've heard police work is dangerous."
"It is. That's why I carry a big gun."
"Aren't you afraid it might go off accidentally?"
"I used to have that problem."
"What did you do about it?"
"I just think about baseball."

These are my favorite comedy movies ever. The jokes keep coming at such a pace that multiple viewings are required in order to catch them all.

"Ed, he's got a picture of your wife!" :'D

My Police Squad dvds ain't working anymore. :\
Tried to watch them last year, and around episode 3, they started to skip (and eventually stop).
It doesn't look like they have scratches, and they used to work, i don't know what happened.

I should've ripped them when i had the chance.
I think they were just terribly mastered using the lowest quality materials. Like they didn't want to spend too much money on an almost completely forgotten short-lived Cable TV series from the '80s.

We would have come earlier but your husband wasn't dead then."

I should probably pick these up soon. I've seen the first one more times than I can count, but I'm pretty vague on the sequels.

The first was the gift that kept on giving. I was in for nothing but the slapstick as a little kid, but as a got older, I kept picking up on more and more jokes.

And yeah, Police Squad was great as well.

I loved The Naked Gun movies (and Police Squad) growing up and I still do, they are just so damn funny and never seem to get old.

I've lost count the times I've watched them over the years and they still make me laugh. The 3rd one is not as quite as good as the others, still has it's moments though but PS and the first 2 are absolute classics.

Leslie Nielsen's comic timing was amazing and he's the reason they hold up so well today.
