I'm imagining this now and just laughing my ass off

I didn't say it would look good. :p

But yeah, just think of live action portrayals of characters like Sun Wukong. It can be done, and they'll just make him more humanoid instead of a living mascot character.

He says there have been many discussions about a live action figure in the past 20 years, and he personally started getting involved with a live action adaptation 3 years ago. Lots of ups and downs, but he feels they have good partners on this one. His condition is that the project does not disappoint fans of the series who have supported it these 20 years. Blahblahblah. Fluff talk.

Lol

I love one piece to death..... how the fuck can this happen. Like I physically cant imagine it! I'm not even against it i just can't figure out how.

so I have processed this more.

and I think to make it work you need to make a number of changes.

Luffy I think needs to lose his powers and instead become more of just straight up punch fighter with super strength and tough skin (aka luke cagish) a cannon ball is coming... he punches it back.

zoro is going to have to lose his third sword.there is absolutely no way to make mouth sword fighting look any good in live action.

usopp would likely need to become a real sniper with a gun instead of slingshot or make him a tech guy.

nami would likely just be eye candy, maybe they would remember she is a thief and use her as a black widow like character.

and sanji of course would be a kick fighter.

I imagine you cut out the boat as well as main story wise not that much actually takes place on the sea. You just have to have them travel from area to area.

at which point even if you keep the original story for the most part and playfulness it still won't be anything close to one piece.

How disconcerting is Usopp's nose going to look in live-action?

they most likely would ditch the nose or just make it a little longer than usual.

Sounds like they twisted his arm into reassuring fans on this.

I... What? Did Toei trick someone into thinking One Piece was Dragonball?

Though this does explain it's sudden cancellation on Toonami...

Just doing "simple" stuff like making Luffy not made of rubber or making Zoro only use two swords max is exactly why this should never happen. The fact that you had to try...

One Piece: Presented to you by Scott Buck.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I'll be straight, adapting Jojo's Bizarre Adventure would be a far easier feat as a Western TV show than One Piece. Even the really crazy shit that happens in later parts of the series would be far more palatable as a live action adaptation.

I feel like they're gonna make it a bit grittier, more pirate gruffy, which I'd probably prefer tbh... at least it'll then feel separate enough aesthetically to be taken on its own terms.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.

Wasn't the cancellation due to Toei wanting more money and Demarco thinking the ratings didn't justify it?
Even though this was an easy fix by not putting it on at 2:30 in the middle of the night and following it after the boring-as-shit Naruto Shippuden which was going through a filler arc when One Piece was removed.

Tbh the only chance this really has to be great is if it took place in the world of One Piece but had it's own story separate from the anime/manga. That way they could have more freedom with what they can do while at the same time still having core aspects of the series like the World Government's strangelhold of the world.

What if the TV series takes place in the past is going to be about Gold Roger's long journey to becoming Pirate King? Gold Roger didn't have crazy Luffy-esque powers, so they could do a more traditional pirate thing with it.

Uhh, no thanks. One Piece characters aren't Asian.

All three pre timeskip admirals were designed based on Japanese actors, so they're most definitely asian. Sengoku would be too.

That's if the tv show ever gets to the point where they're introduced lol.

Omg I would love it if Robin was played by Deepika Padukone (from the latest xXx movie)

Robin with a darker skin tone >>>>>>

This is inherently the reason why this is one of the worst adaptations ever.

The main character, face of the franchise, is made of rubber. His entire fighting style (as well as several gags) revolve around this.

There is no way that doesn't look horrible on a television budget.

NeoGAF's smiling token!
There's no way this will go well, best bet is some kind of prequel where they can have free reign, but even then I doubt they'll have the budget to do various islands/locales.

Probably because aesthetically it takes alot from American and European comics.

This sounds awful. There is no way this can turn out well. Luffy and Zorro's fighting style inherently don't work in reality and let's not get into characters like Franky

Yea exactly. It won't work as a movie because of scope. It won't work as a show because of production limitations. It just won't work as live action unless it's 1) an absurdist, Monty Pyrhon-esque self-parody, 2) stripped to a more realistic core, or 3) centered on a different story than the Straw Hats'.

Almost none of those bode well in a preferential sense either.

I'm confused on why there hasn't been a Hollywood JoJo film or TV series. The first two parts take place in London and North America respectively.

I think you would lose the whimsy and the slapstick, yes. Even if they tried to keep it in it wouldn't work (I'm picturing Power Rangers camera work with a dude holding a sword in his mouth).

You could keep the sense of adventure and heavy world building, and do a pirate Game of Thrones of sort. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that exact phrase gets used when pitching.

Does that make it a bad adaptation? Maybe. I think so, but if they hit some of the other notes I might be able to think of it as a different take of sorts. I mean, I'd love a quality pirate live action show, and tossing in super powers is fun.

Can we afford Danny Devito as Hogback?

This is perfect casting.
