Trump ponders Rudy Giuliani for attorney general

President Trump is so unhappy with Attorney General Jeff Sessions that he has raised the possibility of bringing back Rudolph Giuliani to head the Justice Department, according to West Wing confidants.

In internal conversations, Trump has recently pondered the idea of nominating Giuliani, a stalwart of his campaign.

Even before last week's blast at Sessions in a New York Times interview, Trump had expressed fury at Sessions — also one of the first prominent Republicans to back the
Trump campaign — for recusing himself from the Russia investigation.

And in a Monday morning tweet, Trump referred to "our beleaguered A.G." not investigating Hillary Clinton.

As Axios reported Saturday, Newt Gingrich — who also went all-in with the Trump campaign — may take a more visible, frequent role as a defender as Trump girds for battle with special counsel Bob Mueller.

Giuliani would have a tough time getting 50 Republicans senators to vote to confirm him. He was such an early and ardent Trump backer that he wouldn't be seen as an independent guardian of the department in these tumultuous times.

In fact, the nomination could be seen as Trump throwing gasoline on a fire. And Giuliani's stop-and-frisk police policy as New York mayor, and clients since then, also would be controversial with many senators.

Giuliani as AG would be an epic clusterfuck.

So I fully expect Trump to do it, since making something into a clusterfuck is the only thing he knows how to do.

Do we know Giuliani's stance on drug laws and private prison? Sessions is truly awful so it may be an improvement.

Much as all of this is a Shakespearean mess, I would actually prefer Giuliani to Sessions. Sessions disrespects the rights of states to make their own positions on issues like marijuana legalization, and his position on civil forfeiture is sinister.

Sessions holds many positions that seem to be way out of the mainstream.

I hope he's out soon.

Trump ditching Sessions for Giuliani would be hilarious for one reason - it would mean Sessions lost his Senate seat for what amounted to a half year stint as AG. I presume he'd re-run for the seat in 2018 if he did resign/get canned.

Giuliani would probably be less folksy racisty personally, but just as bad in every other meaningful way.

I'd prefer just about anyone over Sessions. The little fuck is as racist as they come. Horrible person.

So if Sessions is forced out, does the incoming AG supercede Rosenstein on authority re: Mueller?

Yes, as the new AG would be Rosenstein's boss and would not be recused from the investigation.

The only reason why Rosenstein was able to appoint Mueller was because Sessions recused himself from the investigation.

I'd move to Canada within 24 hours of Trump announcing "verb, noun and 9/11" Giuliani as AG.

Imagine walking down the street to enter a convenience store to get a coke and getting harassed.

Imagine heading into a job interview for a corporation. Everyone is at lunch with windows overlooking the campus. You get S&Fed in front of the gate with everyone watching. You get the full treatment of who are you, where are you going, basically interrogated. Do you think that you'll get the job?

AG "verb, noun and 9/11" is the absolute worst choice for AG given his track record. Imagine him giving the CBC the same speech he gave in Brooklyn where basically told all those black people these crimes were their fault. He'd bring back those racist statistics that only mention this alleged black on black crime that stopped in 2005.

Is Giuliani stupid enough to take the job?

True... if Trump had offered him AG at the start, he would have jumped on it. As things currently stand, he may want to just stick to his awful security company and make bank fleecing the Trump administration rather than get sucked into the vortex of failure.

Isn't Guiliani under investigation though? Seeing as he helped with the campaign he'd have to recuse himself too, I imagine.

Good point. Anyone involved in the Trump campaign should be required to immediately recuse themselves as part of confirmation hearings.

Sessions is worse and he's already bringing back those racist statistics.

He'll fire Mueller immediately.

True. Those calling for Sessions to be replaced don't realize that Sessions can't interfere with the Russia investigation whereas Rudy can fuck up everything. Rudy also can't be trusted. He teased the Comey letter. Not to mention that Rudy has a history of supporting racist policies too (although not as racist as our friend tortured Keebler Elf).

I'm in for the gasoline added to this dumpster fire.
The dumpster fire formerly known as America?

I live here so I would rather they not burn everything to the ground and pray this is a low point and not the new norm.

It is insane to think of all of the shit that has happened in just the last 6 months...

Commander Nefarious, Captain Im a Bad Guy and Admiral Bone-to-pick

Didn't he turn this down once before? I'd love seeing him dragged through Congress. Also enjoying Sessions getting shit on from all directions.

As for policy, we're already on a shit path. Sessions is already expanding civil asset forfeiture. Rudy would probably take NYC's stop and frisk national.

It's happening whether we want it to or not.

Oh good grief. Just fire Sessions already. Like you care about anything. You fired Comey and nothing happened. Just fire him.
