Overwatch trolls will face tougher penalties

There's a Reddit thread called "Its nearly impossible to solo carry your team to victory, but very possible to solo throw your team into a loss," and I think that's the main cause of Overwatch toxicity.

In CSGO, people will scream and yell at a guy for messing up, but they'll still try to win because a 4v5 or whatever is still manageable. In Overwatch, just a single player not pulling his weight creates such a hopeless situation that everyone tilts. Similarly, a thrower in CSGO is much, much more limited in impact than in Overwatch, so people don't do it as much.

God, this. I'd say at least 50% of the games lost in Overwatch are because someone refuses to switch to a more productive hero. If you have five angry teammates yelling at someone who just won't switch, it won't be long until they start turning on each other.

Blizzard is basically putting people in frustrating situations without any real solutions. Of course the community is shitty and toxic.

How the report function still isn't available on console is baffling. But based on what pc players are saying, it doesn't sound like the report feature does anything anyway.

If a mercy is being trash, I'm going to tell them, if a DD isn't killing, I'm going to tell them. I work too much to waste time coddling bad kids. All my trash talk is gameplay related, I don't attack them personally, I don't know em. But I know if they're playing like shit. I've been master past 3 seasons and gone as high as 3900. It's worked for me since day one. I play in a group of 3 and we maintain a 50%+ win rate. You can defy trash talk without demoralizing people. Look at the army.
Man, what a joke. I can't believe this shit.

What I mean is, when people like you start throwing cause they can't take trash talk, I stop worrying about them. You're throwing, the match is done, I don't waste time getting mad once someone starts throwing. I'm only concerned with winners. I'll get my win back.
You'll get back your win eventually but if you were smart, you might have 2 wins instead of 1 loss.

Blizzard babying the user base much?
What's next? Coupons for sippy cups and tell everyone that everything is going to be alright at the end of every match?

I'm so glad I was part of a generation that's tougher than a weak goomba.

My gawd, the edge.

Oh and, a weak goomba as opposed to a...strong goomba? Are you a strong goomba? What's a strong goomba anyways?

I recall the days of battlenet StarCraft and oldschool Counter Strike. The trash talking was not nearly as bad because those games don't force teamwork and cooperation upon players. I wouldn't say the 'older' crowd had thicker skin.

It's bizarre that you don't understand that you're the problem, you're the one causing the game to be so unenjoyable for others that they no longer care if they win or lose, they just want it to be over quicker to get away from you. You're the type of player I mute instantly after your first tirade, followed by a report if applicable. I wouldn't throw, though, I always try my best to win even if I have a toxic player on my team. But I can tell you right now, I play worse when I'm on tilt, so flaming me isn't going to make me play better, quite the opposite.

I'm definitely not going to report someone for spamming. I mean, why? lol.

Other games like COD modern warfare 2 would simply kick the player for being AKF.
It shouldn't be MY JOB to do THEIR WORK.

Trash talking is what makes pretty much any competitive game interesting.
Being trash talked only triggers me to trash talk back.

I'm not about to cry and call mom because someone told me to git gud or something more aggressive.

Just man up and deal with it.

Daddy issues, the post.

I play for fun, if someone starts trashing me because they think I'm not healing enough or not killing enough I just laugh, usually they rage.

I get it, even this post makes me feel like I'd want to trash talk you. But you know what, I'll keep it civil since clearly you have some insecurities. It's shown by this internet tough guy persona you are trying keep. I wish you the best and hope that you will overcome your fears and anxiety. We are here for you if you ever want to talk.

Back in the day we had server admins to deal with shitheads, but now that things are mostly matchmaking that's not as much of a choice (though Overwatch does have the option of servers), so it's up to the developers running it to deal with them.

Sorry to break your rose-tinted glasses of a time when people could be rampant assholes with no consequence though.

Or someone who has thick skin...
I get along very well with my mom and dad.

They didn't raise a pansy.

For a badass you sure are incredibly insecure about your masculinity.

Life does not come to you on a silver platter.
I'm not going to lie to myself and feel entitled to anything.
This is what keeps me strong and head held up.

You seem to have a problem with how I handle reality.

Trash talking in Video games today is NOTHING compared to chat rooms back in the 90's.
If you can survive that then you're practically invincible compared to what's considered harsh by today's standards.

Yeah people face many hardships ofcourse and people need to find ways to cope with it. Video games are one way to take a break from that, so why poison it. Keep in mind that not everyone is out there to hurt you, you don't need to keep that "impenetrable" shell all the time. You don't need to push strangers away from you with hostility. It doesn't make you stronger. If you are down, absolutely try to pick yourself up. But trying to drag others down only makes them miserable too, but you are in no better situation yourself. There's nothing to gain by that.

Again, having "thick skin" and "being a man" has nothing to do with the hobby of video games. And only a "pansy" would have to defend his or her right to be an asshole to people for no reason.

Testosterone is poison.

You are correct - life does not come to you on a silver platter, outside of being born into money or similar ilk. If your lack of entitlement, as you claim, keeps your head up and keeps you strong, why would you defend the practice of belittling others for no other reason than to lash out at those with little consequence?

Also, I was in plenty of chat rooms in the 90s, and I really don't recall the vitriol you seem to discuss here. To be honest, I don't remember any sort of major doxxing or swatting occurring either. If your personal internet PTSD has forced you into a "reality" where you think your physical or mental strength has anything to do with video games, then deal with your stresses outside of a hobby that affects others. I might also suggest therapy, or at least attempting to learn empathy.

WARNING: completely utterly anecdotal

As someone with 2000 hours in Dota and about 200 in Overwatch I think Overwatch's toxicity is actually uniquely worse in some ways.

A bad pick in Dota will attract rage but you're stuck with it, so on some level people are still trying to make it work. Overwatch allowing switching at any point has brewed this environment where nearly every match has at least one person dictating everyone to switch to his liking, and when a pick is just blatantly poor and ineffective it makes it that much more infuriating to people if it isn't being changed.

Also, I think Overwatch attracted a lot of people who haven't played a competitive game before. Even though it's seen as rather casual in the wider scope of Dota/LoL/CSGO/etc, for a lot of players this is the first game where they've felt ladder anxiety and the sweet release of watching your Personal Worth Rating go up a nice +25 after eking out a win; in other words, they're still working with a rather thin-skin in regards to losing, so the community at large seems weak at containing their frustration relative to older esports.

It's a far cry from the "LMFao WhO CaREs Xd" c'est-la-vie attitude towards losing that a good portion of Dota's playerbase has apparently developed since I started. I've had so many matches in Dota where we lost so summarily that everyone just starts laughing, doing stupid shit and playing polka music over voice chat while drawing dicks on the mini-map. I never see this in Overwatch, it's always rage-feeding into the meat grinder while bickering all the way until the defeat screen.

Completely agree. I play symmetry a lot. I'm good with her. Like pretty fucking good. But Jesus Christ I want to not play her sometimes because it instantly tilts people. Or they're like passive aggressiveness about it and then they die immediately I and then flip out and demand I switch, one push means they were right
I and I made a bad pick.

And worse because they focus on that pick and not what they're doing that's affecting the game. Usually me not taking the bait and just talking level headed and making call outs is fine, but sometimes it isn't. It's always those games with those people that is a loss. They're also usually the ones who refuse to switch and demand that I switch to whatever they think we need, (which is a lot of times a healer, because these people never actually play healer because they're not team players lol).

And these people, ugh, once they get started they just don't shut up. Probably the worst part.

People are allowed to have thin skin and enjoy a video game. Not everyone is as "strong" as you.

If you can't play a game without being negative in tone, you have more underlying social issues to focus on.

Aw, the weight of truth is falling in his shoulders

What I remember from back in the day playing OG counter strike and BF1942, basically a couple of people with good cooperation could dominate most of the opposition in any random server. Sure there was trash talk, but the abuse was really damn tame compared to some of the League of Legends and Overwatch mess I've seen. There is something about that MOBA and hero shooter formula that is so fine tuned to make people rage, I've never experienced anything like it from other multiplayer games. Rocket league might be pretty bad too but I muted everything but the text callouts after hearing 10 year olds chatting. I'm really not sure if these games have much in common aside from being popular, competitive team games.

Good old days, but funny part is that almost no one took this trash talk seriously, ppl knew that it's just adrenaline and there is no reason to care about words that some no name saying

Wow. You're all having a full on meltdown because i'm able to handle myself.
lol just calm down. Everything will be alright...

...

I mean, they're razzing the hell out of you because you, very proudly and somewhat ignorantly, proclaimed that your a better person for not only buying into, but leaning hard into toxic masculinity.

But you know, you do you man. "Being forged into a better person by constant verbal assault" is literally some cultist shit but hey, your skin seems plenty thick.

Fuck that, I talk trash all the time. Makes the team step up. Don't punish me for thin skinned people who can't mute folks. Grief is a whole different matter and should be a bananable offense.

"It's actually about trash talking my own teammates in video games"

wait that doesn't make it sound any better

I doubt they'll do shit.
I had a Plat Mercy that decayed all the way to silver do nothing but shoot her gun and not heal when we could have held the point with those heals.

The worst part about it is some idiots on our team (and of course the other team) defended them saying that Battle Mercy was a legit "playstyle" and that it wasn't throwing.

Lol not really, don't know bout the rest but I just think it's laughable how talking shit to others make you think you are hard boo

It just goes to show how easy it is to set people off now days.
I'm not even trying and people here are like:

The only point you've made is that you're a pretty poor excuse of a human being. If you honestly think acting this way makes you "hard" or that you're impressing anyone but yourself, then you're sorely mistaken.

We're laughing at you, not with you.

I don’t trash talk my teammates. I’ll be honest and tell them if something isn’t working and ask for a switch of characters. I’ll change characters myself if I have to. There’s no point in demeaning people. It doesn’t make them play harder it makes them hate you and play less hard. Don’t understand why this is so difficult to comprehend.
