Project CARS 2 discussion thread (provisional release date: Septemberish 2017)

Anybody have any good PS4 and/or pro impressions? This is my racing game of choice for the fall but it seems like things are mostly focused on PC thus far.

Playing there's quite a difference. And that's the thing with PC2: these videos are done with in game assets, no extra doctoring or using models that don't belong to gameplay. I see all the showroom pics and trailers from GT Sport, then go watch some gameplay videos and it's like generations appart. I'm yet to see GT Sport in front of me, but gameplay videos don't do it for me. IMO, asido from some lighting choices, PC2 looks far more consistent and realistic overall (super high contrast sure helps GT in looking appealing while in replays, but during gameplay it's very jarring).

The beta was hugely underwhelming visually. I realize there's still time to work on it but the assets just aren't up to par. Increasingly GT is a game that looks wonderful in replay trailers and screenshots and not so much in gameplay. I much prefer the look of PC2, which is a bit painful as a long time GT fan.

I played the beta and thought it looked great on my 4k TV with HDR, obviously it was still work in progress.

The game is looking really good with it's latest build though. PS Access has been doing videos all week.

Love the cars warming up the tyres before the race starts, very nice touch.

Bahahahaha

Needed a laugh today, thanks.

I genuinely don't think pCARS 2 will launch with any more 'issues' than your typical game this time (certainly nowhere near how pCARS 1 launched), but ANY bugs at all will be grist to the mill for anyone with even a hint of an agenda. SMS really do have an uphill battle this time around due to the unfinished state of first game. I just hope the goodness of pCARS 2 gets a chance to shine through.

Probably not, but considering how badly PC1 played (and still plays) on a controller, which is a prerequisite if they want to sell it on console, you've got to forgive people for being a little bit skeptical.

Bugs I can handle, they can be fixed (well, sometimes.....), I get that thing take time and the wolves and banging on the door so you need to ship, I get that.

Yeah, quite a few pad-playing friends abandoned pCARS for good within a couple of hours because of the joypad controls. They were bloody awful for anyone coming from GT or FM. Both of those use filters for very good reasons..!

Have you seen the series of videos showing PC2 being played with a controller on default settings? It looks pretty good.

I really hope for good default pad controls this time around. Dirt Rally had okay default settings, even Assetto Corsa wasn't problematic for me.

I do wonder how they could've transformed the controller feel without altering the general physics of the game.

Unless they've added whole new levels of assistance or extra support. I always liked the 'sector sensitivity' settings from the SimBin games that you could set three zones of different sensitivity (low input, mid input, high input) which gave you more precise control on the analogue stick.

GTR2 had wonderful feel on a controller too, but I don't know if that was because of how that game's fundamental physics engine handled grip.

'3...2...1...GO!'?

After all these years, GT are still using racing game start concepts from the 90s?

Don't really buy racing games but this is really appealing to me for some reason. Not sure if I want to pick up this or the F1 game.

The physics have changed. That said, there're ways to improve the gamepad handling without compromising physics and they have done so.

In general, the physics, particularly the grip and the differential, feel more organic. There's more of a grey area when it comes to grip and wheel spin. In PC1 you were eirther anticipating or spinning your tail. This change helps a good deal to gamepad controls, because the window to compensate is wider.

I'm guessing the TRUE SIMMERS will complain about the game being an arcade because it's easy to have the car inside the black. Now, doing it while going super fast ain't that easy. When you do a turn incorrectly, you lose time. When you do it terribly, you have big chances to spin.

Fun thing is all consultants and drivers in general agree modern competition cars are super easy to drive, they just become dangerous when you are pushing to the limit.

Just saying GT looks better than it did. PC's 2 still looks amazing too, I'm looking forward to both games tbh.
To be honest, we can't complain about today racing games graphics. They all look great. You can have your preferences, but anybody saying any of them look bad, is just being obtuse.

That said, I will never understand people salivating over 320px gifs or pics from showrooms.

I just found this:

IGN - HOW PROJECT CARS 2 IS POSITIONING ITSELF AS 2017'S SERIOUS RACER TO BEAT

Important quote about controls:

The impact of that handling overhaul, by the way, cannot be understated. I didn’t mind the handling in the original Project CARS (it’s grippy and stable) but it was very punishing on over-the-limit driving and required a lot of tinkering to hone it to a gamepad. Over the past year, every time I’ve covered Project CARS 2, readers have commented with their issues regarding the original game’s handling. My advice, at this stage, is to forget about that. On a wheel, Project CARS 2’s handling feels noticeably improved. The grip feels more natural and the force feedback language is doing a better job at communicating what’s happening to your car – especially when you’re teetering on the edge of losing it. On a gamepad – and this is the big one, considering it’s how the vast majority of players will experience it – it feels like a different game entirely. Throttle and braking control is still a bit tough on tiny triggers (without assists), but the steering is vastly more intuitive and less twitchy. This is out-of-the-box, too; I haven’t changed any controller settings yet. I don’t know that I’ll need to.

I really wish it had a demo. I got burned with pcars and YouTubers or fans playing the game early aren't going to persuade me really.

Even if pcars 2 still controls like shit, I've got Forza 7 and f1 2017 to enjoy.

If there were particular cars being played with a controller, what would change your mind? I'm going through a range of cars with a controller at the moment and will demonstrate some obvious improvements.

I would have said the Caterham classic, but I don't think it's in PC2?

Other than that, the BMW 320TC was particularly touchy with a pad.

Odd. I used 900 with my thrustmaster, but using 900 on my new fanatec was all types of fucked up even after calibration. But I then set it to 500 and its better than its ever been with either wheel.

Ah, I might actually be using less than 900 degrees in pCARS come to think of it. I can't rightly remember.

Pre-Ordered the big version of this and forza today, also fifa 18, with scorpio in mind. Thats me until 2019 hopefully. Do we know what the scorpio targets are for pc2? hopefully locked 60 is prioritized.

I think they are prioritizing 60fps over 4K.

Sweet, But hopefully HDR is in there

Just watched a Dev interview video on YouTube and he said they were playing to all of the strengths of each platform including Xbox one x so I would hope that means it's in but he did not give details

Edit...
Btw the same vide was all about control of vehicles, both wheel and pad and game dev ran several races with both with all assists off. Looked pretty good in road cars and Indy cars even with a pad.

He looked a bit dodgy with rally cars though on pad.

Last night was a night of discovery. I was racing at snowy Nords with an old Race Escort (there's RallyX and Street variants too), 60x time speed with my XboxOne controller and I was amazed at how "easy" to control it was.

But the discovery was the Photo Mode. You can pause and take a photo and it just feels like you are doing photography. The game has bokeh built in and it just feels good out of the gate, like you are using a camera. Of course you'll need some composition and some tweaking to get the best results, but I was surprised at how the well autofocus works. You can add some artistic filters too.

The interesting thing is this is not a bullshot mode, as it doesn't add AA or anything like that, AFAIK. So it's basically like taking your camera into the game and recreating what you actually see during gameplay.

This is the result of me playing around with this tool for the first time:

As you can see, these are gameplay settings from my aging 770 (damn miners, why won't you let me upgrade to the 1060 I ordered!?).

Why VR Is Awesome #327

Parked halfway down Mulsanne in a 20-odd grid GT3 race last night, then got out of the car and waited for the field to lap me, just to see what those puppies look like from a couple of metres away at full tilt. Heard them coming, turned to face them just as there was a ma-HOOSIVE argument about thirty metres away, resulting in two cars spinning towards me at high speed in a cloud of smoke. I don't mind admitting I nearly soiled myself, and fell over my racing seat trying to get out of the way.

Edit: oh, hang on, it was Porsches, Lambos and Ferraris so must have been in Assetto Corsa, not pCARS. The new Assetto AI can have awesome crashes like this with high aggression.

Hah, the memories. I remember playing LFS with a friend who was trying DK2 for the first time. At the end of the race, I went straight at him and crashed. I heard a panic scream through my speakers followed by a burst of laughers (from me and others). This guy was breathing heavily while he said to me: Son of a bitch, I almost died there!

Good fun.

Sure! 1 hour long

Edit updated to beginning starts at 5:49 in (also echo goes away after a few minutes)

Thanks!

I cracked up at 10:50 where they both tried to keep poker faces and totally ignore the fact that the LaFerrari suddenly jumped into the air when the results screen appeared...

Mini land mine?

Eek.

There is functionality to get out of the cars?

You just stand up and walk away. The cars aren't real, you know. :p

(You will think you are going to bang your head on the roof the first few times though...)

Nah, this has to do with AI taking control of the car. It also happens when entering pits (sometimes). Hope it gets fixed.

I just assumed sitting or standing, the game would force your perspective to the cars cockpit

I don't want to derail from the game too much but I feel like pad/wheel discussions are not too far away from a pCars thread. I've actually kinda just stopped playing racing games for now until I can get an entry level wheel and was just wondering what recommendations ye might have for an Xbox One compatible wheel.

I can't wait for pCars 2 though. I enjoyed the first one but the Zero to Hero run I had done felt weird because all those invitations to other events meant I never really got into a groove with the karts (plus I'd need to change pad settings every time).

Looking forward to the new disciplines too.

Nah, you can get out and walk around the car, even peer up the exhaust pipes if you are so inclined. It's a great way to appreciate the details in the modelling (or lack of it sometimes, like really blocky rear wheels in the Formula cars in pCARS). Assetto Corsa seems to use full car models for the player's car, and some things that you'd never ordinarily see outside of VR are sometimes modelled in exquisite detail.

Christ, me too. It's a real immersion-breaker. It happens again at 25:55. SV even goes 'Whoah!' when it happens, but there's no explanation given. I wish he'd properly acknowledge the problem and say it's being worked on because it looks like they are just pretending it didn't happen.

Well, when you show your hairy balls in public you pretend it did not happen, you don't explain why it happened :p

I've not really fine tuned anything (since doesn't make much sense when the game is not even out), but overall I'm pretty happy with the performance (I've got the 4GB version). I'm getting similar performance to that of PC1, but with much improved graphics. There're probably more tough scenarios, because 3D trees, rain, snow and all that stuff, so maybe you can say performance has more ups and downs when these things meet one each other.

Thanks! I have a GTX 960. The performance I get from Pcars 1 was very good. (Or good enough for me). So I guess there is hope...
