Junichi Masuda talks about the future for Pokémon on Nintendo Switch

"What I’m really curious about, and really excited to see, will be the main way that people play the Switch, Masuda explained to Game Informer, in their September issue.

“Will it be home for the most part? Will it be out and about? I think that is really going to depend on where the person lives, maybe. Depending on the country, maybe the main style of playing will be different. As we’ve been saying a lot, we always focus on, when designing the games, thinking about how the player is going to play the game – how they’re going to enjoy it, and what kind of experiences they are going to have. I’m really just kind of excited to see where the main style of playing is going to land.”

...

"Of course, it is very difficult to make the game, so I hope people don’t get their expectations up too high,” Masuda admitted. “We’ll do our best.”

I mostly leave my Switch docked, so that's likely how I'll play Pokémon on the system.

Either way, this interview doesn't seem to have much in the name of details. Not surprising, seeing as they still have to hype up US/UM.

Considering people are expecting Pokémon of the Wild and not Sun & Moon but maybe a bit more open and with better graphics means a lot of people are going to get disappointed.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
As long as you don't bring amiibos into the mix and hopefully stop charging for Poke Bank because we are going to be charged for Nintendo Switch Online (lol I doubt it) than he can do whatever he wants.

"Please don't be excited"

Lol.

All I'm looking for is something along the lines of what you've been making, scaled graphically to look good on a 1080p display. Everything else is pretty much gravy.

I'm totally expecting something that is essentially sun and moon with higher resolution.

"Don't get too excited for the first big HD mainline pokemon"

Impossible. I'm expecting the world. Sun & Moon is one of the best pokemon games, and yet pokemon switch needs to be even bigger and better. My brain is not even entertaining the idea of this having a chance to be a failed project, and if it did, it would be a bigger disappointment than five MGS V's.

Meanwhile I'm over here salivating at the thought of being able to play the same exact games on a TV and take them with me when I'm not home. I really hope that's what we end up with tbh.

It'll be interesting to see how they handle it.
Going from <PS2 level to >Wii U level from one system to another should lead to some impressive results...but it is gamefreak so we'll see.
If the combat will remain the same which it most likely will, I hope they spend a lot of time making the overworld and its presentation feel more modern.

The fuck? Gamefreak, you make tons of money. Hire some people if this is hard for you!

Looking back at that Wishlist thread, a lot of people are gonna be quite disappointed, and I'm not even talking about the people that wanted unrealistic stuff like the game going open world and what not.

Mine is pretty and pink
People epecting them to radically change their formula and not expect just a new pokemon game on a new platform should really calm down.

I hope the game atleast is like Gale of Darkness or Colosseum but bigger in scope and more open, with the handheld like 8 gym structure + full region.

And ofcourse better graphics.
Open world is not gonna happen tho.

It's going to be spectacular that's for sure.

That'll honestly be enough for me. Mainline Pokémon on my TV has been a long time coming.

Yeah.

Nintendo needed Monolith to help make BotW.

I don't think GameFreak itself is capable of doing any radical change.

Way ahead of you Gamefreak. I'm already expecting shitty performance, and the same bullshit online services that have plagued the Pokemon games since Diamond/Pearl.

I'd like to see them do something like Dragon Quest XI, make two versions with one being focused on the people who want a scaled back handheld version, and one for those who want a real console experience style of game. This could also work as the Red/Blue, X/Y, or Sun/Moon split for the game.

All we are going to get is a game that is marginally better then the 3DS games if it's not just a 3DS game to begin with.

Will this not be a mainline game going by his don't get excited comment?

It will be. But after BotW people started theorizing the new Pokemon would be something on that scale, instead of just a prettier Sun/Moon with better performance and a new region/story/Pokemon

I don't expect much. Basically HD Sun and Moon.

But I honestly don't see the reason why a series that makes as much money as Pokémon does couldn't evolve in a really dynamic and interesting way. What is it about Pokémon that makes it resistant to widespread change?

What are you expecting? Seriously, they announced this with no title or art work and have said it'll be a year or more before it's done. If this was August 2018 I would understand where you're coming from.

The more chat I see online the more I see people's expectations become more and more like Pokémon Breath of the Wild instead of a higher res and smoother gameplay/frame rate versions of what we've been getting. I just hope the regions are bigger and more detailed.

Ironic how we're excited for Pokemon being on the TV, when a big appeal of the Switch is taking "console level" games on the go lol

That they're already making crazy cash merely through making small changes, so why bother going all out I'm guessing? Not to mention it would take longer to make.
