Rey is a clone of Luke, she was made by the bad guys after they found his dismembered arm and light saber in Bespin. She's the Solid Snake of Star Wars

The First Order: Galactic menace or prog rock band?

Ha you will all see when they reveal Rey's last name to be Romano and that all these new Star Wars movies have a been a huge ploy and are in reality sequels to Everybody Loves Raymond.

ELS cinematic universe confirmed.

looks great but good god Rey's hair looks so stupid from the back. I hope that's not what they're sticking with throughout the movie.

I don't, but I also remember that cloning Luke is not new for this franchise.

And it was godawful then. I can't imagine Kathy Kennedy or anyone else with an ounce of sense at Lucasfilm would resort to making the main female character - who's been received extremely well and has got a generation of younger female fans on board - be a clone of Luke.

Oh aye. It's a terrible idea, but it isn't impossible how it could be slotted into the story.

It's a part of one. An extremely small part. Focusing on this as indicative of anything regarding the larger marketing just strikes me as weird. This is par for the course EW stuff that every large film does.
First Major exclusive inside look in major entertainment publication isn't indicative at all of overall marketing strategy....yeah ok

You mean the triple knots/buns? That was her hair style in TFA too right?

Considering other promo material it looks like she'll be having a Qui-Gon hairdo for the rest of the movie.

oh shit it was. haha I didn't notice it before. totally a non issue then in that case. just seems so odd seeing it in a still frame like that

Why would they make a clone of just Luke? Surely a Skywalker/Kenobi mix would be superior. Maybe even throw in a little Palpatine if you wanna get wild. Mix it all up into one delicious Rey stew.

A theory I've read is that Rey was using this childish hairstyle on purpose ever since she arrived on Jakku in the hope that her parents would recognize her when they return. In The Last Jedi she changes hairstyles because she has finally abandoned the idea of finding her parents.

nah, this EW thing is really the big kickoff here, expect a trailer in a few weeks cause they got merch to sell on Force Friday, which is September 1st.

Lucas just has this stuff orchestrated to blow you out of the water by hitting you across all channels, vs drip drip drip.

plus you just had D23 a few weeks ago with new behind the scenes vid

Yep, I reckon there has to be a trailer coming before the 1st. There's one character in particular in quite a few of the merchandise leaks that I would assume they will want to reveal in a trailer first, rather than randomly showing up as merchandise.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

PM?

How will you maintain your cult of personality if you're wrong?

See, this is why you guys just populate cults instead of leading one: you're all too malicious! And exceedingly petty! You gotta be benevolent. Like me.

See, when you guys are inevitably wrong with all your stupid, simple prognostications based on limited imagination and broken coventional wisdom, I'm not even gonna MENTION your foible. It won't even occur to me to look for which one of you anxious bedwetters screwed it all up for yourselves yet again, because that's not really the point of this. That's not why I carefully, and with much premeditation and considerable effort, built this storied post history and glorious off-topic gaming forum legacy that soft grown men who have not come to know the warm embrace of my acceptance hiss and spit at in recoiling disgust like undead ghouls of the night.

No, this considered, artfully constructed cult of personality was built by these deft, fleet hobbity little fingers and my even fleeter, keener mind not simply to tut tut cheeping baby birds as they noisily plea for regurgitated genius!

Its to secure a position of power such that even the mightiest YouTube critic will fall from their lofty perch at my merest whim, so that I may brag to my wife later about having done it before I am asked to scoop the catbox again.

So go forth and speculate fearlessly!

If I didn't know any better I'd think that was a joke post but this ain't a joking matter for the one and only Gary Whitta.

Who is in the merchandise leaks that everyone doesn't already know about yet though?

None of the toys have contained any real surprises.

Sephzilla's official thoughts on Rey's parentage and probability of it being true

Rey is Luke's daughter
Likelihood: 70%
Reason: Everything in The Force Awakens points to Rey being a Skywalker. The Skywalker family lightsaber calls to her through The Force. She's a talented pilot just like Anakin and Luke. She has visions of Luke in her dreams. In her Force Vision, every character seen or heard in the vision is related to Luke in some way (Vader, Kylo, and Luke are all heard in the vision. Obi-Wan and Yoda both trained Luke). And the core Episode movies are pretty heavily focused on the Skywalker family.

Rey is a Kenobi
Likelihood: 10%
Reason: It would take too much time to explain how Obi-Wan fathered a child despite the canon seemingly showing he never had time for that. Plus how the child of a Kenobi flew under the radar and fathered a grandchild in Rey

Rey is a Palpatine
Likelihood:0%
Reason: Yeah, lets take the first female lead character in Star Wars and make her related to the super-villain of the franchise. Bright idea.

Rey is Anakin reinarnated
Likelihood: 0%
Reason: Yeah, lets take the first female lead character in Star Wars and make her a reincarnated version of a child murder and villain in multiple movies. Bright idea.

Rey is a clone of Luke
Likelihood: 5%
Reason: Yeah, lets take the first female lead character in Star Wars and make her a gender swapped version of the male hero from the first trilogy. Bright idea.

Rey is a nobody
Likelihood: 15%
Reason: It's possible she's just some random nobody who happens to be super powerful in The Force. There were way more Jedi than there ever were Skywalkers. But considering these movies are mostly about the Skywalker family, I doubt it.

Rey is Snoke who is Bobby Roberts
Likelihood: 1000%
Reason: Because I damn well said so.

Hey, is the illusionist just behind GOB the guy who plays Jeff Bridges' partner in Hell or High Water?

edit: just checked imdb and I guess it's not him.

He was in a couple episodes of Veronica Mars though. And on Buffy.

Concerning the reincarnation theory. Why couldn't they take eastern slant on it like the Dalai Lama, or the Avatar cartoon?

Is that all you got? Honesty, I think this would be the most inspired lineage for her character both because it's less predictable than her being a Skywalker or a Kenobi and because it would make her a nice foil to Kylo Ren. You'd have a Jedi, whose lineage is Sith, taking on a Sith(Ren?) whose lineage is Jedi. I'll be disappointed if they don't take it there.
