"Chat's saying you need to pick up the purse?"

Man I miss old Giant Bomb. Can't believe that website is almost 10 years old. GB is different now. I guess we all grow older.

Time to dig into some of the older stuff. I never saw the BR run of Deadly Premonition, think I'll go through those today.

What's everyone's favourite old GB video/series to go back to?

Dan/Drew/Jeff-era Demo Derby is perennial, and their SOPA/PIPA video is still hilarious

I got into No Mans Sky with this new update and re-read Alex's review of the game and man, what a great review.

I love Alex's writing and the way he approached the game and the review were great.

as a heart attack. If you're going to make an allegory for civil rights, your stand-in for minorities probably shouldn't be ACTUALLY more dangerous than the status quo. That's not a strange opinion dude. They can certainly touch on those issues but there's a whole problematic dimension if you view it first and foremost as an allegory because of this.

Also there's the whole thing where Professor X's school of thought is "if we're just nice to humans they will accept us eventually" and uhh it's 2017 and look at the state of racism in the US. Why I do believe just last night there was an actual Nazi rally.

So your requirements for a proper allegory is that the fictional characters are 1 to 1 representations of real life and that even allegories crafted in 1963 must not differ from the realities of 2017. Ok. That's a pretty novel idea of what an allegory is supposed to be. Make a thread about it.

"Chat's saying you need to pick up the purse?"

Loved that bit and Dan not knowing what they're talking about.

It's a power fantasy and professor x is repeatedly proven wrong.

But there are just as many, probably more, stories where Magneto is made out to be the villain for using violence against oppressors. This is the problem with a blanket statement like "X-Men are an allegory for civil rights" because in a whole bunch of them the moral would be "the oppressed fighting back against violence of the oppressors is wrong". This isn't true nearly as much anymore, but also X-Men isn't really about this all the time at all. Some X-Men stories can work as a metaphor for coming out, or civil rights, or what have you, but as a primary means of reading the entire premise, it doesn't really work, is what I'm trying to say. If you're going to filter every single X-Men story through the lens of this specific allegory, you're gonna get some weird shit. But don't take my word on it, I'm just a cis dude.

I didn't say that, I just said it would make for a pretty bad allegory, because of the above. And as times change, so must our understanding and interpretation of the text.

Breaking Brad: Demon's Souls is an all time favourite for me.

Allegories are packaged in many forms, by nature. That the stand-ins for gays have superpowers doesn't mean much when they are written to be stand-ins for gays. All of the scenes that allude to this (like Iceman's mother in X2 asking him to "try to not be a mutant") aren't negated because of the supernatural packaging.

As for the Professor's philosophy, yeah, you could say he's wrong... but that's also irrelevant to the matter at hand. His being wrong doesn't negate the interpretation that the mutants in the movies are stand-in for gays. You're talking about oranges when I'm talking about apples.

This is the problem with a blanket statement like "X-Men are an allegory for civil rights" because in a whole bunch of them the moral would be "the oppressed fighting back against violence of the oppressors is wrong".

Again. This doesn't negate the interpretation. You are simply disagreeing about what they are saying about the matter. Not that they are saying it. Do you see the difference?

Human Trashcan angrily throwing a book to the ground

"COMMUNISTS DON'T HAVE SNOUTS"

I'm kind of with him but allegories don't necessarily have to be 1:1

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say when I said it "doesn't work". Not trying to say you CAN'T read it that way, or that it was never intended to - a bunch of stories and scenes from the movies obviously are, like with Rogue and Iceman. Apologies for the confusion.

As a one off, I really love that bridge ql

I miss Austin. That quick look is funny to watch the first time. In the same vein, the Ravaged QL is one of the all-time best.

Dan/Drew/Jeff-era Demo Derby is perennial, and their SOPA/PIPA video is still hilarious

Whiskey Media was such a special time. I wish the guys would do more dumb shit like that SOPA video again. Maybe we're due for another Big Live Live show.

Loved that bit and Dan not knowing what they're talking about.

I genuinely thought Dan was playing dumb with Vinny for a while there.

Breaking Brad: Demon's Souls is an all time favourite for me.

I loved when Vinny fucked around with Brad's character when he wasn't looking. Vinny + Brad is a great combo.

I wonder what Giant Bomb's gonna look like 5 years from now. These guys have been doing this for so long and there's limited vertical movement in their type of career -- I think there may be a chance for people like Jeff or Vinny to move on to something new and different.

The fun world we live in: enter "Giant Bomb" into the google search bar and the first suggestion is now "Giant Bomb Abby." (I checked this on my wife's computer, so it isn't picking up on any GB related searches I've made in the past).

Everyone just appreciates that she's the best hire they've made since Austin.

Is anyone else disappointed when a QL turns out to be a GBWest joint? I was looking forward to the QL for The Long Dark, but was kinda bummed to hear it was Brad and Jeff. At the very least, Brad seems into it.

No, I much prefer GBWest QLs of good games and GBeast QLs of bad games.

Sorta.

It's not that I'm intentionally not watching anything West; it's just that I barely watch QLs as is and having it be Beast is usually what pushes me over the edge into actually watching it.

Somewhat, but funny that it wasn't that long ago when we'd see a QL go up and be like "that thumbnail looks boring and it's like 1.5 hours it's probably GBEast."

I couldn't help but laugh at Jeff getting upset about having to kill the rabbit in The Long Dark. Must be the California in him.

Always funny seeing people being upset about killing animals but at the same time not having problems with eating lots of meat.

Yes, I definitely do hate you and it's because of something as petty as this.

dude no, come on. I thought we were steam bros. we played BRINK together man. BRINK.

Brink was cool and you are a cool dude. I'm not sure I deserved that pot-shot though.

Pretty much anything from whiskey media era I will generally watch on a regular basis. 2011 was a special year for sure.

That Giant Rom vid is fucking amazing. Will definitely be the best video of the year besides GOTY stuff. Time to catch up on UPF and that Long Dark QL.
