Those not living in the USA, how do you feel about what's going on there?

I'm Portuguese.

Well, from an European perspective the US, even though progressive in some areas, always looked like a socially regressive society with all the pudic, religious and nationalistic stuff, but what's happening right now it's a bit scary tbh.

Not only because of the good folk over there (my heart is with you guys), but most importantly because of the influencies and repercussions over here. Fascist and racists, even though a minority here, are unfortunatly coming out and somewhat feeling validated by the madness happening there.

Spanish, GF tells me horror stories, I read horror stories on GAF and elsewhere, I think there are many fucked up trends going on, and a very flawed American culture.
Visited NY last year, I'm not sure if I want to visit again. Maybe California where GF used to live, but the whole gentrified Techie world doesn't attract me.
It all just feels either bigoted or shallow and fake.
Not everyone is what you see on TV. There are or normal ppl living normal lives.

This recent hate rally hasnt made me dislike the US at all really. It's such a minor thing really , the US has always been a fantastic place to be and visit over the years. And a couple of shitty bad apples wont make me change my views, sorry.

We have these nazi people protesting in Sweden as well so. It doesnt phase me really. I feel like media and internet and blowing these things waay out of proportion.

edit: Same with terrorist wont make me go on about doing stuff i wanna do like going to concerts, going my planes and so on.

edit: Seems there were some people from Swe that was at this rally in Charlotsville. https://www.svd.se/flera-svenska-hogerextrema-i-charlottesville. Swedish article but can google translate.

I didn't want to go back and visit the US before Trump.
This isn't new, it's just more out in the open now.

I think this is the logical conclusion of American apethy and unwillingness to deal with societal problems.

You can only sweep it under the carpet for so long before it all comes tumbling out.

Super disappointed that you guys blew that once in a century chance of making your country liberal for decades (SCOTUS).

Fortunately Trump is so incompetent that somehow everyone else can step up their game without really getting in trouble with the US. Trade agreements with other countries (and without the US) are completed in record time as we speak.

Of course #notallamericans, just millions.
So many millions that it exceeds the entire population of many civilized countries.
Then there's the millions of apathetic americans. If they didn't vote, they're just as responsible.

I was hoping the US learned something from the Bush years. Apparently not.

Way too many seperate threads about US politics and a lot of "leftist" praising and "right-winged" hating.

Everyone should have equal rights, but every right oriented voter is a nazi, fascist, racist and deserve the worst. Boring threads, so I stopped reading those threads for a while.

True discussions without starting with hunts against each other are severely lacking.

Trump is awful and the US is diseased. I feel bad for the decent and sane Americans living there and hope you can turn things around sooner rather than later.

Have some friends who live over there is some conservative areas and from the stories they told during the years I cant say I am shocked things are like this.

Obama really russled the racist feathers. This was the inevitable next step.

As a sociology student and a politics junkie I admit to following US politics much more than my home countrys. Things happening there are intriguing and a bit scary at the same time. From outside perspective, I can't believe how black & white things often seem to be over there.

It's funny that a few bad apples ruins the bunch for so many as far as wanting to visit. I meet and talk to a lot of tourists and they almost all go out of their way with very glowing remarks with how great their trip is and how friendly and accommodating people are. Maybe their expectations were low lol. The reality of visiting the US isn't what you are reading in the headlines about a few fringe nutjobs.

It's a disgrace, although I felt things were worse in some years of the Bush presidency. Evil people were in power in both cases but back then they got things done, this time around they're too inept and the constant failures and fumbles are more entertaining than worrying to me here in Europe.

Long term I think the US is f.cked if they don't overhaul their political system. An all powerful two party system is bad because it leads to divisions right down the middle of society and the political class has forgotten how to make compromises and negotiate. It's just blockades and revenge when majorities change from both sides. There is very little progress that way. Time to give space to smaller parties where more extreme views can find a home so that a big party like the Republicans can't be held hostage by a guy like Trump.

Very disheartening. There are many reasons why I love and respect American culture and that's pretty much why I'm on this site in the first place but these days... Damn, it really feels like watching the fall of the Roman Empire from afar.

I never imagined I'd witness so much hatred happening in America in the 21st century. I guess the hatred was always there and I just wasn't aware of it. And my own country is far from perfect of course but at least we rejected the far right in the last election.

As I said, this is just very disheartening. I hope our american friends will keep fighting and that in 2020 sanity will prevail if an impeachment doesn't happen first. But the wounds that have been opened will take decades to heal, if they ever do.

That's GAF being left leaning. Plenty of sites lean the other way.

That's the way the internet works now. It's mob mentality where majority dogpiles on the unpopular opinion and chases away opposing views. Good luck finding a site that'll have civilized, neutral discussion.
Social media is all about self-affirming echo chambers now. Pick your bubble.

A complete trainwreck and worse the train is full of manure.

I'm being selfish but I just hope Trump's damage only affects America directly. You had presidents that were less of an embarrasment like Bush Jr and Nixon and yet they fucked the world for generations, Trump hasn't done anything as bad as the war on terror or the war on drugs (ffs, America can you chill for a generation at least?) and while he has potential for bigger disasters, I hope his divisive nature will get him impeached before he launches a nuke or starts a big trade war. Even if he's not impeached, he could be a lame duck held in place by your institutions.

People here are rallying for human rights, justice for the poor, and other relevant issues in our country.

People in America are rallying because they support Nazis and white-supremacy.

People here are so diverse, from Muslims to Christians, from Black to White skinned, from Asian to Western, etc. We didn't have any news everyday about hatred and racism. America on the other hand...

I won't praise our politicians though, as there are many bad apples working to fuck us up. But I think it's not that different with American politicians.

Moved to NY (legally, yes, it is possible if you work hard and respect rules) from Europe a year and a half ago. Best decision of my life.
I would not change that for anything else, and I love it here.
And millions that try to move here every year (legally or illegally), probably think the same.

People that "are disgusted" by the US and have never been here make me laugh.
YOU would know that something is "bad" just by following some of the garbage media that constantly changes things up and only focuses on one thing.
Not particularly referring to Trump, so please, Outraged NeoGAF, don't start attacking me like it happens in 95% of US topics on this forums (which is why it has become a chore to check the Off Topic section).

If you ever wanted to visit a city in the US for years, I will guarantee you that NOTHING has changed in terms of danger and stability from the previous President to now.
I used to go out in NYC when Obama was President, and it was lovely, and it is still lovely.
Same applies for other major cities I visited for years.
Instead of making up these crazy ideas on things being terrible from the outside because of the political climate, get a real sense of things.
Visit a country, give it a chance, and then talk.
If you don't really know, how can you speak on things by reading articles on the internet?
Are you also the same people that review a game by reading other reviews?
Is this that common on NeoGAF?

For people that live in the US, well, cannot say much. If you experience things and you are unhappy, that is a different story.
My only criticism is that I feel tons of people are touting "the end of the world" when clearly, that is not even remotely the case.
Bad shit happened when Obama was in charge as well. A LOT of shit. Denying it would just be lying to ourselves.
Obama is a nice human being (or at least, looks like it), but he was not the best president. Being great at giving speeches does not make you a great president, and I am a little tired of people putting the two things together.

Despite the outsiders calling the US a "racist country", or better, Trump bringing racism to the US, all I have personally experienced is a very diverse and open minded community.
Obviously, we have to fight racism, but chances are that in a nation with 323 million people, you will hear about bad incidents here and there.
It's an unfortunate, terrible, number game. The bigger the country, the more likely shit like this is there to happen (with media obviously focusing on it big time).
To make it short, stop generalizing, please. There ain't any end of the world here.
I surely agree on having to fight stupidity, racism and hatred, but don't use an unfortunate event to describe a whole nation.
It makes you look really bad.

Am from the UK.
Last year I learned that Donald Trump was more than just a Flaming Lips lyric, and was in fact a pretty disgusting individual.
I then learned that your country (like ours) is full of gullible, potentially racist people.
And then Nazi's happened and what the hell guys

After Obama this abomination in the white house is an international embarrassment. A low point on the level of the Iraq war for America, and all the potential to be a even bigger disaster for the US and the world.

They were always there, not always under the Nazi name but they were always part of the US. It's what happens when you have a 200 year old country, not that far removed from a significant portion of the country being slaves. The difference here is you have a guy like Trump that seems to enjoy their company.

I'm Norwegian and I still can't believe you elected this disgusting nazi piss fucker as your president. It's almost like we live in different realities or something. According to a recent survey I read, Norwegians now trust Trump even less than Putin. And let me tell you, we do NOT think highly of Putin. It's an entertaining but frightening shit show.

Still in shock that he won. American news media is garbage, so it's not very surprising when you think about it.

The US went from having the most inspiring world leader to the most scumbag greedy full of shit president.

I knew they were about, but I had just assumed they were backwater yokels like in that Louis Theroux doc. They certainly seemed to have been galvanised by Trump

Edit: I still laugh at the fact the US president's name is a synonym for fart

It is mind boggling for me to imagine the president of a developed country going "Both sides" after a terror attack AND when one of the sides was actual fucking Nazis.

Everyday its just constant astonishment really.

I feel like the right has taken off their mask and shown their true face. The moderates and so called "independents" can no longer claim to be innocent while supporting regressive policies. The David Brooks and Friedmans of the world have been exposed.

On the plus side some privileged people seem to have woken up.

ahem sir, you are posting an article from the onion... the... onion...

Canadian. I'm scared that it might spread here. We have hate speech laws that mean at least certain things won't fly over here, but it's still scary, and there are certainly some types that probably support Trumpian ideals.

You ever stub your toe and it hurts so much you start to laugh it off? Watching the US is a bit like that. It's not funny, but it's so bad you laugh at it in disbelief.

Not only that, but it seems it just gets worse each week. All the shit that was brought up about trump weeks ago has been forgotten due to the much worse shit that has happened now.

In a few weeks, it'll be something else.

USA was a country you always looked up to. I always wanted to visit as well.

But seeing so much clear racism is scary. Also I have the feeling that it's a failing super power and things will get only worse.

Im not a historian but I have been reading alot about american history in recent years.

It seems like the only thing that has changed recently is that these arseholes feel emboldened to kill, lie and justify violence. Whether this is due to economic troubles or Trump (or more likely a mix of both) I'm not sure.

Honestly the whole thing has made me see america in a better light. All countries have their demons, what makes a country great is seeing people fight it and the backlash against these nazis is great to see (the video of the nazi crying is particularly great). It shows that your president actually has little influence, whether that is all presidents or just trumps incompetence is not too clear to me though.

I'm constantly baffled, but then I think "Brexit" and that shuts me right up.

^That too.

No offense, but your president just called for human rights activists to be shot.

Really can't emphasize this enough. I would highly recommend visiting the US to those who are interested, most of us normal citizens are pretty open and welcoming.

It pisses me off because all of my Dad's siblings and their families live there. My aunt works for an organization that deals with helping bring in refugees. My uncles and cousins are black (mixed family, but they are the most obviously black of us). I have lots of friends in the US too of varying differing backgrounds, many of which are affected by Nazis and Nazi leaders currently in the White House.

I feel bad for Americans.

Scary, but I will say that the result of a racist, Nazi supporting government in the US. have strengthened my resolve to fight that we in Sweden do not do the same mistake with the Swedish Democrats who are cut of the same cloth, except their party leader is not as stupid.

I do worry for a cousin of mine who lives in the US. but I still have hope thanks to the more progressive large cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco etc. who tell Trump regularly to fuck off.

I really didn't think he would win, like yeah there's a shitload of racist and republican there but I thought that they would put aside that part of their character because Trump was and still is completely incompetent.

They proved me wrong and all the events which happened afterwards didn't surprise me because of that.

It's just sad but to be expected it seems.
