PUBG tops 8 million copies sold and 700K concurrent users

Games just a fad. Since when was it possible for a mod turned standalone game to be this successful?

I would guess this is the biggest one.

This is seen as some weird PC multiplayer game that's going to outsell Zelda, Horizon, Persona 5, Nier Automata, Uncharted 4, and even some major singleplayer hits of yesteryear like The Witcher 3.

But... I think it did outsell some of those games?

Zelda - I think yes, it should be at 5-6M copies
Horizon - I think yes??? It is not an Uncharted level seller yet.
Persona 5/ Nier 2 - of course. Those are 1M sellers tops.
Uncharted 4 - I do not think yet? I might be wrong, though.
The Witcher 3 - I do not think so. Wasn't Geralt 3 @ 10M copies?

We're not talking about quality or GOTY-ness here just pure selling metrics.

This place, despite being supposedly an enthusiast forum, is super mainstream. I don't use that in a derogatory way - but it's the total opposite of what enthusiast forums usually are.

Enthusiast forums are usually the ones championing underground, indie stuff (not just talking about games, here). Grassroots success stories like this are supposed to be fuelled in part by forums like NeoGAF.

But in large part due to the phobia many on here seem to have for anything that doesn't fit the mould of their standard, AA-AAA single player focused console games. What they grew up with, the games that they never had to seek out - the ones that were advertised to them in magazines, on TV and appeared prominently on store shelves, NeoGAF doesn't feel like the place that has any real part in the success of these types of games.

It feels like the loudest crowd on here is ultra conservative when it comes to games, and PUBG is just another one of those online focused games that the industry is trending towards. To them this stuff is inexplicably popular. Just look at the GOTY threads a few weeks back regarding this game, a reasonable amount of people just couldn't conceive of the idea that a game like this could be considered 'GOTY'.

Some people over here are hostile or at least dismissive of this game for the same reason they're dismissive to many games that aren't AA-AAA single player focused games.
Very well said. It's not just these online games -- everything that threatens (and I use the word very loosely here) the "console single-player narrative AAA" status quo is met with disproportionate derision. Just look at e.g. mobile games, or VR.

I think that was his point (or one of the other examples).

There's also another factor that differentiate PUBG with those games.

Those games have 'stopped' selling. 8 million of PUBG is still on a roll for unforeseen future.

I'm more interested to see if the audience stays loyal to PUBG once higher budget and/or more feature rich substitutes enter the market. Until now the early access loot survival audience has been very nomadic mostly because the product was often faulty. PUBG seems to be the first one that mostly delivers on execution, so maybe this time the audience will stay.

Many big publishers tried high budget MOBA too.

PC-only titles rarely stay in the spotlight for long here. Everytime PUBG gets brought up, someone goes "Again?!". Itd be interesting to see the general reaction once the X1 version is out.

I think Nirolak's point was that there is resentment from some because PUBG is eventually going to outsell all of these games (which are GAF darlings, and all single player games available on console), and from these numbers it seems obvious that this is true.

Personally, I'd rather play Nier than PUBG, but that's no reason to be angry about its success.

The answer is obvious. It's just normal console fanboying, but directed at a PC exclusive.

Nothing to do with it being multiplayer. Crysis got the same treatment.

Totally agree. I see people here, getting angry when a PC exclusive has a lot of success, and in all PUBG threads, console gamers are there, shitting on the game.

That´s it.

Wanted to wait for the console version(s) because I hate mouse and keyboard controls, but I´m jumping in on PC tonight.

Yup, in a year where we've had many narrative heavy, non boilerplate SP games perform way above expectation it is argument that can only be made in bad faith.

I hope the port to consoles plays well enough so we don't get part 2 of the whining extravaganza.

People want Microsoft to have 1st party exclusives. Not moneyhat third party exclusives.

There's a difference.

People seem to be quite happy with Sony moneyhatting 3rd party exclusives tho and no I don't hold a candle for any of the plastic box producers

What? I'm saying that from a business perspective, Microsoft will want to maximize the value from this IP, either by securing permanent exclusivity or otherwise investing in the developer.

Agreed. For MS they are probably thinking more about helping Bluehole get PUBG out on PC and Consoles and then tap the devs up for a real exclusive project. 6-12 months game could be dead and everyone is raving about the new hotness. It could be what Bluehole move onto with MS support.

Plus, MS will keep an ear out for any talk of Bluehole's head(s) wanting to cash out, Notch-style.

Point is, they will want this IP in their corner, permanently.

Do they? I think you will find they cop the same amount of criticism. Only fanboys of their respective console seem to be happy with moneyhat exclusives. At least from what I have seen.

This isn't some agenda against Microsoft.

Correct. It's past most of them. I meant that statement more transiently since I thought saying "has or will outsell" was a bit wordy. Uncahrted 4 is only marginally past it as of our last shipment numbers, so that should be done soon.

Thanks Hektor - appreciate the effort - seems I undersold Nier2/ Persona5 a bit, thanks Nirolak.

There you have it. A confirmed top-seller and phenomenom. I am sure top brass at some other companies are eyeing this closely while planning their next steps.

Aren't most super popular games more like 100:1 sales/concurrent ratios? 10:1 seems completely insane.
Wouldn't that mean the average *owner* of the game plays at least 2 to 3 of hours a day?

Or is it only super popular in one region?

I often read exclusive doesn't matter too. Now it's seems like a big deal, even only timed.

In the end it doesn't matter what we think on this forum - MS and Sony from time to time think to "invest" into a game to get a benefit from that. Then we get talk about it (RoTTR, PUBG for MS, SFV for Sony) or not (RE7VR). In the end, all of the discussion means nothing as this will continue for both companies.

Amazing numbers, game is a ton of fun. Whether it has staying power will depend entirely on the development, given it's early access.
With new maps/features in the works hopefully it all goes well. I hope it doesn't stay in development hell like so many other early access games.

I tried it some time ago (thanks to the steam refund system) but I guess it's not my cup of tea. I mean, if you lose yourself or else, you can meet nobody during the match and it feels boring

I mean, given that the playable area on the island keeps getting smaller as minutes go on, that's a bit unlikely.
You'll be forced to face other players sooner or later.

Not to mention that in some popular "hotspots" is essentially impossible not to run into other players from the beginning.

It is literally Battle Royale the Game. 100 people in a match, land naked, gather gear, survive. The end.
I got that much, maybe it's just what I've seen of it on Youtube and the fact that I'm not big on online PVP. It's a cool concept.
Eh, being in early access doesn't really make it any less fun to play.

And while isn't the most shiny game in terms of production value, I think it looks more than decent enough, frankly.

Eh, it's not so much about graphics or anything and more what I saw of others playing with it and some of the issues including exploiting a seemingly wonky draw distance with players changing the settings to their lowest giving them an unfair advantage with sniping and such, never mind the devs being seemingly trigger happy with bans. Maybe it's better now being it's EA and apparently getting frequently updated and all. But, again I'm not a huge fan of online MP, especially competitive PVP so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe I'll give it a shot before my GMG code expires at the end of the month.

Yeah I know, I even played H1H1 and in the first match that's exactly what happened. I've finished 2nd place only meeting the last guy in the last spot xD

I'm sorry GAF but this game can't be anything but utterly shit on a stick because clearly Early Access = Shit on a Stick©® and it will never ever ever come out and something about performance and crates.

Nothing will compete with this game. Even my friends mentioned last night that this is the first game in awhile that we have all stuck around on and not given up after a week of playing.

It is literally Battle Royale the Game. 100 people in a match, land naked, gather gear, survive. The end.

It's the same with my group of friends, even the ones with kids and usually no time to game at all have bought the game and are showing up every night wanting to play.

Yes this is very true -despite the sarcasm- regardless of your obvious bias towards liking the game.Truth is something else like this or similar will come along like all the others and this will still be in Early Access. Which means poor performance, shoe-string online play, cookie-cutter mechanics, bad modeling...etc. Because why go to far away from that? with people giving you money hand over fist.

I for one wouldn't want to go anywhere near their code base after every patch, with every change, tweak and (crazy ass) addition. That will prompt instability sooner or later. As they make odd decisions and slowly descend into "making money at all cost" mode, because they will be tempered as the pattern shows.

Pretty sure this is going to release. You think Microsoft is going to let them stay in EA forever? They're clearly committed to moving the game forward significantly in each patch.

It's obvious that tons of early access games have problems actually releasing, or turning into cash cows that stagnate, but theres plenty of signs the devs are committed to releasing the game in a timely manner.

Dunno what your weird nonsense rant is about their code base. Do you work for them? Have you ever programmed on a game dev team before even? Or are you just talking out your ass?
