If they do make a sequel I'd like it to take a completely different path and tell an original story, maybe involving one of the other Death Gods with ridiculous names like Armonia Justin Beyondormason. A creepy golden jewel skeleton would be pretty neat.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Sounds like the script is a bit of a mess. Even the reviews that praised it have mentioned that it has to rush through the first hour so it can position itself for the final acts. Which isn't that surprising considering this is based off a long form story.

Very curious to see how this turned out. I HATED the Japanese live action film. Saw it in theaters and wanted to leave the entire time...but fans love it for some reason, so I'm sure this will find its fans either way.

For you.
yeah but it's rotten tomatoes... I almost never see good writing for movies I like, (but yeah i didnt saw DN yet so)
You do know that RT is just a aggregate of reviews right? Go through the list and read whatever reviews you wish. They've been out for a while.

I want a Death Note sequel where they bring back the Death Eraser. It made the original Death Note one-shot pretty dramatically different.

All the reviews for this that have come out so far saying the film is shitty have weirdly made me more interested in watching this than I had been before. Currently at a 38 on Metacritic.

I'm probably going to regret asking this, but is there any reason that there doesn't seem to be a white-washing backlash towards this movie, compared to Ghost In The Shell?

The trailer looked really neat. I've never watched the Death Note anime but I'll check out this movie + possibly the anime too.

I kind of think of it in the same light as The Departed, which was an "American Remake" of a Chinese Film. It's not criticized the same way that something like say Ghost in the Shell or Dragon Ball Evolution were because it's clear in this case that it's a complete retelling of the story with a clear American setting, rather than trying to poorly fit American actors into characters who should be Japanese.

As much as I've been waiting for this movie, it still snuck up on me thanks to The Defenders.

Ready for tomorrow (tonight?).

feels like if you dont knock it out of the park with light and L then all you are left with is some bullshit that isnt going to be any good

other than Ryuk of course, but Dafoe Ryuk alone isnt gonna salvage the whole thing

The same reason The Ring and The Grudge weren’t critisised for whitewashing. It is not casting White actors to play Asian roles, it’s an adaptation of a Japanese story set in an American setting.

Nothing personal against Nat, but he doesn't have the appearance of being a leading protagonist. I'm sure he's a fine actor, but the clips looked amateurish.

Those movies came out before people started to frame this topic as a casting issue. There were certainly people criticizing The Ring, The Grudge, etc., along the lines of "whitewashing", but it was more about why the originals needed to be 'Americanized' in the first place. It was more about appropriation then, and it's a discussion that's been going on for decades.

I do think we collectively accepted these adaptations as 'better' movies, because of Hollywood's glossier production values and big names. What came with the territory was a lot of white actors filling roles, because that's what happens in all Hollywood movies.

So it's a double whammy of bungling the context that these stories came from, and then not even portraying "America" for the way its ethnic makeup actually looks like.

I think we're going to get a sequel. The director Adam Wingard has talked about doing it after shooting Godzilla vs Kong and I think the film will be the highest watched Netflix original film they have made thus far therefore showing a market demand for one.

Plus Netflix has talked about building movie franchises on their platform.

Lol it won't get more views than a netflix adam sandler film.

This is a adaptation, of something that already had live action movies on the original country. Several. Even a TV series. Not quite the case with Ghost in the Shell.

Because the point of an adapting existing material is that you're setting it somewhere the targeted audience is familiar with. The ethnic backgrounds of the characters in Death Note isn't a plot point; it's not the same thing as, for example, adapting Monster and recasting Tenma as a white guy because the ethnic background of the main character is a critical plot point.

I just got my lil cousin(13) into some anime recently. I want to watch this with him but I heard there is nudity in the movie. Can anyone confirm if that is true and what "kind" of nudity it is??

In the original, Light's a straight-A student who's dad is a cop and who starts off obsessed with punishing criminals and who starts to believe in his own innate superiority. In the context of American culture, making him a white guy actually makes a lot of sense here. (Whether the movie effectively plays off the thematic/narrative angles the change in location opens up is of course yet to be seen.)

Still have never read the manga or watched anything but a random episode or two of the anime, but I know what it's about and am kinda excited to see if they can actually make a good live action adaption.
