New Super Mario Odyssey trailer

Skel1ingt0n

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Really hard to argue with this after the latest trailer. Xenoblade 2 is also looking much better now, and also releases this year. They completely, absolutely and utterly stole 2017.

It's probably best to dial down expectations; this year is absolutely crazy and would be hard to top in the best of situations. Zelda is a game we've known for years, and there are no similarly long-known games lined up for 2018. Of course, Odyssey itself wasn't known before 2017, which is nothing short of a magician act...

I'd have to agree. I think 2018 will still be a great year, but to ask for a one-two Zelda-Mario bang again is greedy.

2019, though? Metroid Prime, Pokémon, BOTW spin-off, an IP revitalization, and a new surprise are all very high possibilities.

I am concerned that it might end up like Jak 3 where gimmick missions (however well executed they are) and mini games take over the core platforming moveset of mario. That being said, I can't help but notice that almost every "unique" action by Mario has a way to speed it up to silly levels which are good if they are going in that direction.

I've seen this "concern" come up a few times now here (mostly from the same people) and I'm not sure where it comes from. This looks exactly the same as SMG2 from a pure conceptual basis just completely seamless in its structure. You acquire stars through mini games, "gimmick" missions that change the way you control Mario and platforming challenges. And if you break it down to its complete essence, 3D World would be the same.

Watched the direct this morning before work as it aired at midnight here.

I wanted to look away, i did look away but then i had too look back at the screen. I was like WHOA that´s soo cool, then i looked away to keep more surprises but then looked back and was WHOA that´s soo cool.

That was me watching the whole thing.

I cannot wait. I CAN´T

The jungle world is the Lake Kingdom, right? In the shot at the end where lizard Mario flies over the jungle, you can clearly see the jungle is on an island in the middle of a giant purple lake.

It remember when people thought there were only 4 worlds in Odyssey?

Now we're around 10 worlds in and that's not even the total amount lol

We still don't know what Retro is working on. It'll be what, four years since their last game? This could be a big one, or at least, I think we all hope it's a big one.

I also feel like with Splatoon 2 and Arms successes, we'll see Nintendo going into more new ip directions. Zelda and Mario going all out, means to me the teams will be ready for something new as well.

I feel like Retro's game is going to be the huge 2018 game for Nintendo.

Game looks great.

I hate to be a downer because the game looks so amazing, but I'm not sure I'm super comfy with Bowser wanting to marry Peach against her will. There's some dark overtones to that.

man, it's almost as if Bowser's the villain or something

I agree and disagree. Between what we know they have coming (Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Metroid Prime, Pikmin) and what it's reasonable to expect (Smash Bros., Animal Crossing) I think the stage is set for a really solid field over the next two years.

Fire Emblem with Animal Crossing in 2018 and Pokemon with Metroid Prime in 2019 probably aren't as big as Mario and Zelda... but they're damn close. In my eyes at least.

And after that you can start hitting the old franchises again. Odyssey 2, a new game in the BOTW engine. I hope they can keep up a solid pace, even if it'll never be as impressive as 2017.

So there are 69 Moons in the Sand Kingdom... I'm starting to wonder whether the total number in the game will be 1000 (or 999). If that's the case and 69 is an average number per kingdom, that would be mean there would have to be 14-15 Kingdoms in the game, which sounds about right.

Plenty of content!!

If we add pure morality to every single video game ever then that would be very boring imo.

The shapes of the palm trees are distinct to the point I feel the jungle is the unnamed palm tree islands on the world map (and the regional coins are leaves, which doesn't seem to fit the Lake Kingdom either)
E: and I don't think that fits "Lake Lamode" as the location either

Same story same plot for the 500th time

But it won't affect reviews, guess they can get away with it

It looks simply incredible. Smooth, fun, agile, felt free. Reminded me of the sense of freedom I felt when I first saw Mario 64 trailers - but in a new way. Can't way.

To be honest, I was a little worried about this game's showing in this Direct. After two excellent trailers and some really nice gameplay at its last two events, I figured we had seen a lot of the ideas in the game and that whatever else they show would either: feel like a bit of a retread, or, not live up to the expectation set in previous showings.

Seems like I was wrong all around. :D SMO continues to be a delight in each presentation.

I hate how every Indiana Jones movie has the same plot. Why does he always have to hunt for ancient treasures? Why can't we get a movie about Indiana Jones starting a bakery?

It's the Super Mario 3D World effect all over again.

The problem is with the graphics maybe getting updated is that they had to use different custom cutscenes at E3 to not spoil the tiara ghost and stuff like that so we don't know if they actually had some of that stuff already

Basically we don't know when they made those cutscenes for E3

Yes, every main entry has has the same plot, but Nintendo actually switched it up since Mario isn't a plumber now!

Seriously, story has never been the focus in Mario mainline games. It's like telling Bethesda that their characters aren't charming and they always get away it.

There are still people that say this hyperbolic nonsense after what 31 years?

If you're going to just drop this and then leave then that's poor for, but if you could actually substantiate what 'story/plot' you'd put into a Mario game without it being terrible and getting in the way of the fun then I'm all ears.

This game is turning out to be truly fantastic, on the same quality of BoTW. I will do everything i can to buy Nintendo Switch Odyssey edition this year.
