The way Mario is conceptualized it's best not to take geography so seriously. This planet was created for this game and its geography takes into account what matters for this game. If it's on this map then it's probably a place you go to, and future games will likely pay no heed to this map. As a cartooby video game Mario lacks real-world limitations in creating the stages the plays are performed on.

Plus Rosalina can always just reboot the universe and create a fresh planet with a fresh layout anytime the devs want

I thought the opening to 3D World made it clear that the Spirxie Kingdom is in an alternate dimension.

I always assumed it was on like another dimension connected to Mushroom Kingdom.

I would find it rather funny if the devs would take the lore that serious.

Sunshine was the last Mario title with a decidedly specific/non-abstract world, so if it is just a reference, I can see why they put it in over the other assorted landmasses the series has visited over the years.

The Mario series canon and lore regarding geography have already been shattered due to a lack of a Beanbean kingdom next to the Mushroom Kingdom. Or the fact that Bowser's Castle should be right next to Peach's castle, as per Super Mario RPG.
