Last of Us Patch Adds More Pro Support / Restores Supersampling

The removal of the super-sampling was because ND actually took away the 1080p options before when playing on a Pro at 1080p and performance got worse (thus people complained), as per DF's video on patch 1.07 not because of some great conspiracy as you're suggesting. This way, they've added the ability to play in 1080p on the PS4 at locked framerates as well as the option of super-sampling.
How to fix framerate for the 1800p mode ended in the removal of supersampling???

Patch 1.07 was to fix performace issues with 1800p mode... that fixed the performace issues with 1800p mode that is used for supersampling.

Patch 1.08 removes supersampling from 30fps mode that was rock solid lol

Which was affecting 1080p users as well.
For 1080p users it went from:

1800p supersampled with framerate worse then base PS4 (60fps with excessive drops) -> 1080p 60fps locked

For 4K users it went from:
1800p with framerate worse then base PS4 (60fps with excessive drops) -> 1800p with framerate equivilant to base PS4 (60 fps with drops).

People still trying to push the "Sony wants to sell 4K TVs" bullshit theory I see, despite the fact that there was zero evidence Sony requested that downsampling be removed.

If it were true, why add it back now?

There was no conspiracy.

Ok let's be clear here...

1800p had performace issues... that is not related to supersampling but because the supersampling uses this mode then it shows the same issues for 1080p users.

Patch 1.07 fixed the issues with 1800p mode... that means supersampling to 1080p users were fixed but Sony decided to remove supersampling for these unlocked users.

After that with patch 1.08 they removed supersampling from locked 30fps modes that never had any performance issue.

Supersampling never added performance issues... it was the 1800p mode that had performance issues.

Supersampling was removed altogether, it wasnt removed over two patches - and yes, the fact that they resolved the framerate issues in 1800p mode is exactly why Naughty Dog recieved flak for removing supersampling, but people do forget that the game was locked 60fps on the Pro on a 1080p display vs a mostly steady 60fps on base PS4, so there was some (even if it was marginal) benefit over base PS4 users. Hence, the more likely scenario is that Naughty Dog prioritised performance for 1080p owners after all the flak they initially got rather then assuming Sony forced them to remove supersampling intending to implement systemwide supersampling before scrapping it and asking them to repatch supersampling in..

I think at this point it's safe to assume there won't be an OS level downsampling option. But I understand why.

At lot of Pro titles don't hit 2160p/2160c. So hitting 1800c, upscale to 2160p then downscale to 1080p probably won't look as good as 1800c down to 1080p.

I firmly believe this is an SDK issue that needs to allow the game to render at an arbitrary resolution and have the system upscale/downscale as appropriate and then lay a native UI over the top.

I can be wrong in that part but I remember...

Patch 1.07: removed supersampling from unlocked mode while 30fps had supersampling yet.
Patch 1.08: removed supersampling from locked 30fps mode.

1.07 was the original PlayStation 4 Pro patch which included Super-Sampling at the cost of frame-rate, as aforementioned.

1.08 completely removed super-sampling (both modes) for users with a 1080p output.

I can't understand why this 1080p 30 FPS mode stil exists. They should remove it just like they removed the 50 hz mode in Jak And Daxter PS2 Classics so the unaware people won't be stuck playing in this inferior mode. I expect many PS4 Pro owners who may be careless and play in this 1080p 30 FPS horrendous useless mode.
Please Naughty Dog remove it to avoid confusion.

Can you pick which maps you want to play on in multiplayer?

I might rediwnload the game and try and get some of the trophies I missed it on.

Ohhhhhh that was my mistake... thanks.

Thanks.

What I want is a way to only play on certain maps, but it doesn't sound like the ever added that as an option.

The maps are weighted evenly so you at least have the chance of knocking out those map trophies. The multiplayer is still alive and kicking as well, it doesn't take any time to find a match.

Playing on a Pro/4k HDR TV, I just loaded my game and tried out the different settings. The 1800/60ish is bliss. Definitely what I will play with.

Does the PS4 perform the final upscale from 1800c or is that left to your TV?

On a side note, I think Sony should start mandating an additional 4K dynamic res option on all games in order to future proof titles. No patches required then when the next PS gen hits.

I played through the game earlier this year and recall there were a few darker sections where the contrast/black levels were completely screwed up. I found a weird way to make it look slightly better was to leave the PS4 on full RGB and set the monitor to limited RGB during those sections.

I haven't had the chance to check yet but it would be amazing if this was fixed since it seems to be a forgotten issue. Has anyone who noticed the same issue taken a look yet?

not every game has the headroom for a dynamic 4K resolution boost, nor does every engine support dynamic res

A dynamic 4K mode option that never hits 4K is fine. No patches required to enhance current games on the next gen would be a great draw.

I mentioned this at launch, the black levels are completely screwed in the first third of the game, especially when you're underground.

www.polygon.com/platform/amp/2016/11/11/13597836/the-last-of-us-remastered-ps4-pro-fps

It was making rounds on every gaming news site at the time, and 1080p users in particular weren't happy at the time.

I was perfectly happy with the supersampled 1080p/30fps mode, that I was playing the game on at the time, and I preferred it over the performance mode.

"The Last of Us Remastered runs worse on PS4 Pro than standard PS4 at 60 fps"
"Why The Last Of Us Can't Handle 60FPS On The PlayStation 4 Pro"
"The Last Of Us Remastered Performs Worse On PS4 Pro"
"The PS4 Pro might actually make your games run worse"

Those clickbait headlines, that made it seem like it's worse altogether on the Pro, were the driving force for the bad publicity and the resulting downgrade. As much as I was pissed off about Sony removing supersampling, it most likely wouldn't have happened without those headlines, and I could have played the game the way it was nearly ten months ago. At least the damage is finally undone.

im saying a 4k mode being unplayable on the pro just to 'future proof' a game makes no sense for developers to entertain with the extra effort required

Great to see the supersampling back for people with 1080p TV's, since the framerate issue for 1800p / 60fps mode was fixed ages ago. It was weird it got removed really, as the framerate issue was so minor, it wasn't a big issue anyway.

Maybe it was a bug with supersampling that was causing the small framerate dips and they took it out to fix the issue, but it wasn't a big priority, so it took them a while to get around to fixing it.

The 1080p supersampling is very slight to my eyes which is odd as I usually really notice a massive difference.

Still get shimmering on edges...will have to take a look put in the open for distant cables and meshes to really see.

That was the first thing I thought.

ND just waiting it out cause it's coming system wide and now bringing it surprisingly back so long after the deletion cause it's not coming anymore.

Well, too bad, Xbox One X will have it and it's one of the biggest reasons why I'm switching my main console in November.

X is nice and all but it dont have ND or the rest of Sony exclusives so regardless your not getting ND games supersampled.

For the Pro it's not a good idea but on PS5 it would make a lot of sense to prepare for a possible PS5 Pro.

I feel a bit skeptical of downsampling happening on 1080p...

Got to a scene that has overhead cables and they look the same when on 1080p or 1800p. But on other things like window edges you can see an ever so slight improvement on aliasing. I do think it's there but it's not the best use of it I've seen when comparing to CoD for example.

I know it's not stated in the patch notes but does HDR look even better than it did before? Things seem to be a bit brighter during the bright parts of a scene and darker areas have greater detail in their shadows.

System wide supersampling dream is dead?

In either case, good news!

Yes I'm afraid the optics on this combined with the silence after the Pro patch and the imminence of the xbonex don't look good.

So Bruce Straley removed downsampling from the previous patch...

No?

Hahaha I immediately thought this too.

Congrats to the intern who did this over the summer.

Well they did launch the uncharted expansion so possibly they were given to green light to come back and mess with this.

So the missing shadows have been fixed then with this patch. This is great.

Accordingly, I really hope they will patch Uncharted 4 and The Lost legacy to improve the motion blur, enable SSS all time and bring the missing and higher shadows of the reveal of The Lost Legacy.

I never tried the 30fps cap before, so I don't know if this issue is new, but from my try the frame pacing feels way off. Doesn't seem like a proper 30fps cap to me, the stuttering is all over the place. I played Horizon and FF XII HD before, games with proper frame pacing, and it's a big difference. Not sure what's up there.

The increase of PQ thanks to supersampling is good, though. Not a big difference like for Rise of the Tomb Raider, but still a nice improvement.
