Its not mean its how toriyama writes, its the rigmarole of the Shonen battle arc structure, sometimes Vegeta and Goku are those characters. Characters who get bodied and are supposed to be strong to show the strength of other characters. Its just that , that plot device was nappa's life. His entire life was that. He didn't have a character , he was a big guy who had an uninteresting design who hung out with vegeta, he was designed to eventually be nothing.

They've been going with the current designs in most cases. The only two exceptions are 18 and Trunks. 18 is probably because they wanted 17 to tag along and have matching outfits. And for Trunks, the purple hair is just more iconic.

I don't think he's " effective" as a villain, I think vegeta is during that arc, because he's actually like... a character. And I feel like The ginyu force, The androids besides 19 and Majin buu a character who seems to incredibly dumb and can barely formulate sentences in two of his forms was a much more effective villain that showed a range of emotions, and goals and motivations, and very mcuh seemed like characters outside of that moment. Unlike nappa, nappa literally feels like he's a glorified saibamen I can't imagine nappa existing outside of that moment with vegeta.

Honestly, I think this is projecting Vegeta's character from later in the series onto him in that arc. Up until the Frieza arc, Vegeta was basically just Nappa but stronger. He was an angry shit who yelled a lot. It's later when he gets his Tragic Backstory™ and becomes more of a character.

But either way, Nappa didn't ultimately get that backstory so he's still where Vegeta was at the time. So it's fine to leave him out. I just want my SS4 Gogeta.

Raditz's secret is that he is always SSJ3, he had evolved so far beyond anything else his normal life was just walking around SSJ3, hence the regular hair.

But his downfall was mistakenly dying while doing that Dragon Ball thing of starting out low level just mucking around then going "Haha, you were holding back? I figured as much, well so was I!" *powers up*

Usually we repeat this 3-5 times a fight until finally 14 episodes into it they're actually fighting 'for real' now.

Poor Raditz got caught out early, woops!

Also I dream of one day Nappa's moustache turning SSJ.
