Ive more fun on the Switch this year than I have on any console dating all the way back to the super nintendo.

Worth every penny, especially if you have not played BotW.
Same for me.

I have owned every Sony console except the Vita and every Nintendo console except the U and VB and I owned consoles prior to the NES.

For me the hybrid console is a game changer. Hard to go back to a regular console or portable for me after the Switch.

I do wonder about the price. Skyrim SE launched for $60 last year and DOOM 2016 did too but several months earlier, and dropped in price pretty heavily pretty quickly. I wonder if they'll try $40 or $50 seeing as how they didn't care to maintain the $60 price all that long when it originally released.

Expecting $60 though, it's a new-for-Nintendo release just like Skyrim. People will buy it at full price.

Couldn't agree more. My PS4 was collecting dust not because It didn't have anything good, quite the opposite. I could never find enough time to play or the tv was occupied. The flexibility of the switch is a game changer. All it took was a 2 year old tegra X1, and nintendo's vision and magic to convince us that this is the future of gaming.

The use of such a powerful SoC was required to deliver a WiiU+ level console experience, but frankly what Nintendo brought to the table in the form of their concept for the device was really compelling to go alongside this. The docking is something anybody could have come up with, but the local 2 player coop out of the box with no extra parts is ingenious. Games like Snipperclips, Overcooked and Mario Kart are ideal for this and when the inevitable Smash Bros comes out it's going to become even cooler. The Split Joycon mode is also surprisingly comfortable and useful for playing in bed or on a train or aircraft.

What every mode has in common is just a base level of elegance that sort of lacked from a lot of recent Nintendo hardware. 3DS and WiiU had good games, but they also lacked a level of polish and refinement. Even just down to aesthetic things like the WiiU hardware looking kind of goofy, or the 3DS having asymmetric screens that never looked right. The super low res on the 3ds screen and wonky colours are just... bleh.

Once they roll out multimedia applications and VC for Switch it's going to more or less be a dream device... well maybe if they also fix the stupid online voice chat rubbish too.

You know, I didn't think of it that way. Every switch is 2 player right then and there. Don't even have to find a second controller, and it's not even like the console bundles that game with two controllers - the console, by virtue of needing to operate, REQUIRES that you have both of it's controllers at all times. It's like a wireless version of the Famicom coming with two permanently available controllers, but iwth more buttons than the Famicom and even the Wii.

Agreed with all of this except the idea of playing Smash Bros with one Joycon. Now I'll have nightmares thank you.

Yup. Bought Sonic Mania on Switch despite owning a PS4 Pro and 4k TV because I could take it with me anywhere. I also have played and beaten DOOM but plan on picking this version up because it's looks decent enough so far and...it's portable.

I love the Doom series, and Doom 2016 was one of the few/only multiplatform games from last year that I really wanted to play, and even though I have a PC with GTX 970, I knew I wouldn't play the game on it if I bought it (since I haven't played a single PC game since building the PC years ago, despite collecting dozens on Steam)... On Switch though? I will pre-order it the day it gets listed on Amazon.

Same story with Skyrim. Never played it (and I own it on Steam), but will play it on Switch.

I'm so eager to try this that I already finished making the OT. Looks great.

Just waiting to plug in some of the details.

Not saying they'll never add multimedia stuff but they really have no incentive to. The system is selling great as is the software, and selling software is what drives revenue for them and their partners, not a bunch of people streaming movies on Netflix.

Plus the fact that it was been their plan to not have these extra things since they were pitching the console to devs and pubs like 2 years ago.

I think multimedial apps will come sooner or later.
Anyway, I read here on gaf that the media has embargo will be lifted this week... Hope it's true and hope we gonna have good news.

I think we're going to see $60. I also expect them to not follow the typical price drops we see on the other platforms, with both remaining at a higher price point on Switch.

I don't see any compelling reason why Nintendo would not want Netflix, Twitch, Youtube, Amazon Prime etc as available software. It won't lower their sales at all. Nor do I see any reason why those companies wouldn't want their software on Switch. They want their content and services on every platform under the sun. It's frankly Bizarre that it didn't launch with that stuff, and even more bizarre it's not on there right now.

It was about 5 months between launch and the 3DS getting Netflix. The only reason I can think of why it wouldn't be on Switch is if Nintendo intended to get some kind of OS update rolled out before they allowed non-gaming applications on it. Even that is a stretch.

Well we do know they'd (the usual ex Factor 5 suspects who do all of these aps) already been working on it and there's just some businessy stuff holding things back.

Yeah and Japan already has the NicoNico App and Karaoke Joysound will follow soon.

I can't help thinking that the advent of a true portable console could change how publishers look at developing their games so they get maximum mileage. I think we're going to continue seeing publishers do ports at a later date so they don't cannibalise their sales on pc, ps4 and Xbox. As Switch starts to become more mainstream and is a secondary game console for everyone they can take things further and give people a reason to buy two copies via some sort of cross save concept. Play on ps4 and resume on Switch on the go via an account setup. Taking it further again they will have exclusive portable features. Taking things even further why not design the game to take advantage of all gaming situations. So have scenes where it's best played with mouse and keyboard, then longer exploratory scenes where it's best playing on the PS4 on the couch and then build aspects of the game where it's perfect for the portability on the Switch. All seamlessly played via cross save functionality. Could give people a reason to buy multiple copies to get the best experience with the game. Okay ill go back to smoking my crack.

I don't disagree really, it's just a bit disappointing that they'll be doing their best to gouge the growing audience. But like I said people (including me) will most definitely buy it at full price.

We do? I must have missed that...

This is the first time I'm hearing that lol

A lot of people have been saying 9/20 for the embargo since that photo of the Gamestop guy started showing up. I don't know how they know that but I'd be willing to trust these people.

Yeah, the multimedia side of things has never sold to me. Vita had a whole load of stuff that I just didn't use. I would imagine that a lot of us already have a smartphone and hefty hard drive in their pockets. I always head to that for media and having a machine pared back for just games playing suits me fine.

£49.99 in the UK according to Amazon, same as Skyrim. I can't say that I'm really surprised or offended by this. They're going out of their way to port a pretty demanding game to the Switch, and on top of that they probably have to use the 32GB cartridge (which are supposedly expensive as hell). It all adds up.

It is pretty jarring that I was able to get the Xbox One version the other week for €10 brand new though, but I suppose the game just didn't sell well on those platforms. Hopefully the Switch userbase will take to it more, since it's a great game.

Do we actually have sales figures? I thought it sold very well, but for whatever reason the price dropped super quickly regardless.

It would be kinda hilarious if DOOM becomes the next "sold better on Switch than all other consoles combined" success story.

I agree that this pricing seems acceptable to me. Being able to play these games on the go is a completely different value proposition than playing them on an XBONE.

What makes you think it didn't sell well on those platforms? The game definitely sold several million on PS4/Xbox One combined. and 2+m on PC alone. I think the issue might be that it had a price cut rather early on due to potentially slow sales initially?

I mean, this is the same price any other game is on Switch is when it comes out?

What you can buy it on any other platform has no bearing. Even being a portable version has no bearing.
