So Sean Spicer went to the Emmys today...

Inviting people who were "just doing their (atrocious) job" to these sort of functions has been normal for decades. We constantly invite veterans to VIP events.

Why not invite Michael Flynn or Steve Bannon on too? I never understood this particular idea of feeling somehow sorry for Spicer as though he was a victim of this administration. Like hiding behind bushes to avoid the press and being denied a meeting with the pope are supposed to really endear me to this idiot? Scaramucchi was fucked over by Trump too. Do the same people want to break bread with him? Jesus.

Me right now. You've never had to fall in line and just do your fucking job before?

If your boss is having you do completely irredeemably immoral things day in and day out then that should not be your job. Don't act like Spicer's some poor guy who couldn't get any other job. Fuck off with that. He didn't need to be press secretary. He didn't need to go out and knowingly lie to everyone. He could have said nope and resigned. He didn't and he should face consequences of that decision. He shouldn't have job prospects anymore. His credibility should be completely gone. We need these to be the consequences so the next spineless twit at least has to think about what he's doing before he goes out and does what this asshat did. We shouldn't reward this crap with fame, fortune, and more job prospects. That's bullshit.

Eh, Hollywood's been using Spicer for the past year for material. Seems okay to invite him.

Didn't notice anyone walking out.

The consequences of his actions of lying, not saying gas chambers, etc., is being invited to the emmys. I think he's doing pretty good if this is what happens working for the dark side. He gets lambasted on twitter, but if hes not actively on twitter, then the criticisms pretty much don't exist since he doesn't see them.

Stephen Colbert has a lot of clout. It's highly possible he could have shut down the idea of having Spicer on in advance.

And he's one of the highest paid people in late-night TV. It's not like him doing this Emmy gig is a matter of making rent this month.

Yeah and as soon as he left, he was awarded with lucrative offers from Fox News.

"just had to do my job to make a living" doesn't apply here. Unless he was somehow poor and starved for work before he became press secretary?

Yup. He was a propaganda minister for a white supremacist.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
Hopefully Colbert is fired for this.

Huge over reaction. Not surprising. This entire thread is an over reaction. Spicer was the joke. He was used to provoke Trump and be shown as an example of the liar he is.

I guess all of the punches that were thrown at Trump in the opening song just before Spicer appearance wasn't enough of a hint.

Spicer gets a big pat on the back for being a good sport and being able to laugh at himself

This right here is the problem with USA and the world. Glorifying a man who make things wrong behind the banner "I was working for the president, what else could I have done?" People like Colbert, use this guy as a laughing dummy and then he is famous all the sudden because he spread lies and was ill-intended because it was his job?

I never held Russell Peters in high regard but this is still disappointing to see.

Just wait until Trump's out of office and back to palling around with all his media friends.

It's good then that literally the only consequence for working for an actual fascist is that you fail upwards, get a huge paycheck and applause from Hollywood then? I'm not seeing how Spicer is the joke here? He seems to have made out pretty well considering he apparently has not suffered any social cost for being an active propagandist for Trump and is probably getting huge money for this appearance.

This is only fine if you see Trump as some kind of exceptional evil that lives in a vacuum and not as a direct result of the trajectory that American politics has been on.

Fuck Spicer, shame on Colbert.

You think Spicer did this for free? Sure he can be the butt of a joke but he got paid so no skin off his back. Now he can get more offers by right wing orgs. He can get his own show on Fox News and paid in millions like other people have done.

lmao I wonder how trump tapped into the notion that the media and liberal elite were all a bunch of hypocritical snobs, couldn't be due to their actions right?

Live the GAFrage over the joke, I laughed when he came out particularly at the audience reaction. He's a modern Baghdad Bob for sure.

Isn't his job being a late night show host? When you're getting paid $10/hr doing some fast food job yes you need to fall in line. When you're making tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a year, you have actual choice in what jobs you take and what you agree to do when you take said jobs.

Colbert absolutely agreed to do this. He's always been a fake fuck though so this is not surprising.

The post you responded to is referring to Spicer not Colbert.

Ah my bad!

Same goes for Spicer too though although of course not to the same extent as Colbert. He's not exactly hurting for money if you take a look at the approximate salary for the job he took and the job he previously held in the government. It's far from minimum wage.

And this is what glorifying/celebrating a fucking liar looks like. Damn

Even worse than the stunt itself IMO.

Pass along the most dangerous and horrible lies of the Trump administration and berate people who call you out?

Get invited to the Emmys to meet stars

I wouldn't take that fucking job. And if, if I went into it not aware that it would require lying for Donald Trump, I'd have quit after the first day when it became clear.

He knew what the job was. He knew who he was working for. I have zero sympathy for him.

That said, I thought this appearance was funny and appropriate.

Child rapist Roman Polanski got a standing ovation from hundreds of celebrities for winning an award, yet folk are shocked and outraged that the same people would invite Sean Spicer to the Emmys and hang out with him.

I mean I understand why he did it: it was more to infuriate Trump than anything else. However, I do agree with most folks here that Spicer shouldn't have been invited to appear. It was normalizing what Spicer has been peddling to the country throughout his tenure as White House Press Secretary: a pack of lies. It's getting a blowback in the media where I'd be surprised if Colbert just swept this under the rug with no explanation toward his actions.

Wonder if he pulls a Maddow double down

Or if he recognizes the concerns
