I completely forgot you have to pay to play online on consoles

It was absurd in 2002 and even more ridiculous now. GwG and PS+ free games are what should drive subscription services, online behind a paywall is something I can never understand.

I don't think anyone is happy about having to pay for online, I think most people just tolerate it because it's a minuscule cost and most people would rather pay it than not be able to play online. Of course everyone would prefer it if it were free. Not sure why people are getting so aggressive about it.

Can't you see why it's upsetting for people that don't pay for it? It affects everyone regardless of their choice. It's an anti-consumer practice and showing support for it will only push publishers and big names to throw more of them down our throats, something they're already doing at full speed since there's no better indication that people will pay for anything than a succesful paywall for P2P online.

If this only affected you nobody would care, but it shaped the industry as a whole. Remember when the PS3 had free online?

By the way I didn't tell anybody to get a PC. I even have a PS4, I just don't pay for that crap.
Do you think calling people fanboys etc. will change anything regarding this though?

I completely agree with this.

I stopped playing destiny 2 post campaign because i refuse to pay for plus

locking note sharing behind a paid subscription in bloodborne was so disgusting that i will do anything i can to get around paying for those services. nothing they provide is worth the price, including the games they provide

You can be 100% sure if Discord goes subscription a new program will rise and replace it within a month.

This is not consoles we're talking about, on PC it doesn't work that way.

This is what finally pushed me from disliking Sony to despising them. Absolutely shameful and vomit-inducing.

Just the biggest and most disgusting example of stripping a game's feature (even the most basic) away to make them hostage. A literal "fuck you, pay the paywall" they can shove right up their greedy scoundrel asses.

Meanwhile Demon's Souls still has free messages and online 8 years later.

I didn't mind paying for live when I played my 360 online everyday. I never paid for ps+ on the PS3 but I did on PS4 to play diablo 3. Once my live runs out on the one if it already hasn't I'm never paying again. I don't really play online much and mostly just use my pc these days.

I just don't care. It's a negligible cost and I've been doing it since 2007 with Live.

I'm not going to get into PC gaming at this point and didn't give a shit when PS3 was free.

No, I'm sorry but I don't see that as an excuse for labelling everyone that pays for it a fanboy or brand loyalist. I'm sorry that what I enjoy has an affect on you but the alternative is not playing games with my friends and not receiving something I feel is value for money (as a package). Would I care if they removed online from PS+ and open to everyone? No - of course not but that's not the case.

Won't happen. You need investments to run service like that. And if there's no money from users - there's no investments. Simple is that.

This is hilarious. You need to relax, it's not that big a deal.

It's good that you enjoy wasting money. Some of us feel you shouldn't have to pay for things that are free elsewhere.

This is what you can get away with when you have a true monopoly on a closed system.

It's what makes complaints about Steam's supposed "monopoly" all the more ridiculous by comparison.

I don't mind it as much on the Xbox side compared to before Games with Gold since I get to keep 2 360 titles (provided I didn't own them digitally already) a month regardless of subscription status. On the other side PS+ gives decent, additional, discounts so I usually end up making back some of that money throughout the year.

Free would obviously be nice though!

There are already open source, decentralized alternatives to discord. That's what I love about open platforms, competition and the ability to choose. People would leave discord behind and to back to IRC, Mumble/TeamSpeak and Slack if there were a mandatory subscription in place.

Good thing the people behind Discord aren't greedy or stupid enough to pull such a stunt. It wouldn't work.

Yeah guys let's all relax and just pay sony for their notoriously shitty internet service so we can get access to basic console features. It's not a big deal we've all got tons of money to throw around
I think thats referring to the hyperbole. You really think he/she was throwing up because someone is charging a online fee? Same thing that ~$60 isnt a ton of money.

The most important features of Discord are already implemented by a multitude of other free (and often open source) programs.
Many of these were in fact available before Discord.

My multiplayer gaming( well, gaming in general) has dwindled so much in the last, oh, 5 years that I can't justify either PSN or Live anymore especially with a PC. In recent years the majority of my online gaming was done on a Sunday afternoon with my two closest buddies on xbox live, usually we'd play something like Gears 3 Horde, Halo, Burnout Paradise, stuff like that. When the 8th gen hit one buddy went PC and to this day hasn't bought a current console( and is only considering the XB1 for a 4k player), and the other one bought a XB1 back in 2014 but is so caught up in his married/social/work life now that gaming is more or less a thing of the past. So I'm out on the paid online thing....PC completely serves my purposes just fine for when I want the occasional online game. Frankly if not for a handful of exclusives I probably wouldn't own a Playstation, the Switch offers a unique proposition with its duality nature so I would still own one regardless.

I've always been fascinated at the "pay for discounts" stuff.
I've since let it lapse, but while I had a PS+ subscription, I rarely played online, but definitely saved money considering how many games I was buying in the sales that had a discount of a few pounds for subscribers. One Christmas sale the sub pretty much paid for itself in a matter of days. It's simple enough, over four years or so I ended up slightly better off for having been a subscriber considering how many games I had bought, but as soon as I had most of the stuff I was interested in I let the sub run out. The monthly game rentals offered and online play were just bonuses to me, I only subscribed where I could see a raw financial incentive to do so.

Yeah, this is why i mostly quitted consoles gaming and came back to pc.

Paid p2p online is unacceptable for me, it's a straight up scam.

Thank you Microsoft for giving everyone this brilliant idea.

Obviously not but if everything said here is going to be taken literally this forum is going to get infinitely more tedious than it already is
Sorry if i came off a bit harsh. There are different grades of exaggeration, also depending on in what the issue/topic is about. People are free to say what they want, but personally i sometime react if people use quite strong hyperbole over minor issues. I think that is why the other guy told him/her to relax alittle.

Its ~$60 being spent over the course of one year, and the group of people this concerns, they can afford to buy a luxury product like a console in the first place. In this context, i think its fair to say in a general statement that ~$60 spent in one year isnt considered "tons of money", not just to me.

That said, if people are sporting many other subscriptions in addition, things can of course add up quickly. Adding more money to this pile can then be over the budget, indeed.

Hard to disagree with this.

It's not that I support the notion of paywalls for online services, it's just that I couldn't give a damn about raising a fuss when it comes to paying 5$ a month or whatever the currency is when paying for a year-long subscription.

It's the reason I switched to PC gaming. Now I wouldn't go back even if they made it free.

Used to buy about 8-10 full priced games a year. Not only did Sony lose a long term customer (had PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP), they also lost their cut from all those game sales, which I imagine is more than what they would receive from me for PSN.

That money goes to Steam, Uplay, and Origin now and I'm getting pretty close to convincing three of my friends to switch to PC gaming as well. Pretty easy, they just need to come over and see the difference.

They won't, it's not 90s anymore. And IRC by default is afwul.

so you suggest that they're "greedy" to their employees instead? :) Services like that is not cheap. If it's "free" that means someone is paying for you.

I agree that having to pay to access online MP on consoles isn't great. It's a trend I was hoping Sony wouldn't follow when the PS4 was released. Sadly money talks in this business.

I have a PS+ subscription myself but it's mainly used for PSN discounts and cloud saves. I never really play the monthly "free" games and the only game I play online is Rocket League.

Guess I'm part of the problem, but I have been thinking of not renewing next year if it's any consolation.

Mumble is free, open source, slightly better voice quality than discord, and you can run your own mumble server very easily.
I'd rather pay £5.99 a month than spend thousands upgrading a PC every couple of years.
I did not know this level of ignorance still existed in this day and age, where pretty much any information is literally a web search away...
If you're not just trolling, it's basically like this; once you build your pc, you're set for a few years (if you chose your parts wisely). When it is time to upgrade, you only need a new graphics card most of the time. Get a mid ranger for $300-$400 (same cost as a new console really) and you're good for another few years. PC gaming is certainly not as simple as some will have you believe, but it's also not as complicated as a lot of console diehards will have you believing either.

Listen to the voices of experience, not the fanboys.

What pisses me off is that even though you pay for it PSN or rather PS Store is slow as fuck most of the time. Now I don't have a subscription, but I'm guessing they aren't limiting your speeds on PS Store if you aren't paying for it? Either way since a long way back I'm mostly greeted by a "please wait" screen that goes on for what feels like an eternity when just opening the store. 100Mbit (~12.5 MB/s actually delivered) line by the way. You'd think that for a service like this they'd have their servers up to snuff.

IRC is still great :) Not sure if its going to come back in full effect (or any effect at all) though.

It's free on Xbox. Pretty lame that it isn't on PS4 though. Not sure why Sony isn't getting criticism for that on gaf.
They have been criticized for that serveral of times. Just look in topics that are about paying for online.

I don't even play online. I buy PS+ for the discounts and the mystery games.

Worth it to me. Some of my favorite games this generation are 'why not I'll try it' games with PS+ (Until Dawn, TellTale Borderlands, Teslagrad).

I haven't played online since Destiny 1 launch.

No joke, I found a Switch in a store but decided to hold off because I remembered the pay-to-play online that’s coming down the pipe eventually. And that just knocks the value proposition of buying a Switch this early that I skipped the purchase for now. And I expect to feel similarity when I see new consoles sitting in store shelves.

I’ve let my PS+ expire and I won’t be renewing, I don’t think. If I want to play online, I’ll get the game on PC. Provided everything else is the same, that’s a huge feather in the PC’s cap for me. (Obviously though that’s not the only advantage the PC version will have)

So I feel the OP here. It does feel like madness to pay for online.

How do I do it?

I buy yearly PS Plus memberships for 30-35€ which equals less than 3€ a month. And then I enjoy some of the games I was gonna get anyway.

SO how much for that initial build and how long is "a few years?"

Not trolling, genuinely curious as you seem someone who is willing to give a straight answer and not downplay it because it is your perferred method of gaming.

I'm still waiting for when Nintendo drops the fee on us for what they want their online services.

There are so many games of theirs that I do enjoy playing online - Mario Kart, Splatoon - that i see myself doing it, if not for myself, then for other people in my family that enjoy playing Nintendo games online, as well.

They would at least be the first company to finally fleece men or an online fee, where Microsoft and Sony have failed thus far.
