Trump takes shots at Kaepernick, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field’

Man I didn't pay attention to that Uncle Tom. I'm not surprised one bit he wants to kneel today. His ass is going to make sure he try to be on Undisputed this week I bet.

I know they are but who fault is that? It's the players fault the NFLPA is weak as hell.

Just saying there's more at risk for NFL players, which likely explains some of the reluctance. NFL players also have shorter careers on average than NBA players.

They did it because Tomlin didn't want to "participate in politics"...

Not even showing up to the anthem is, arguably, even more offensive than taking a knee during the anthem. At least one side has the decency to be there during the anthem as opposed to completely avoiding the anthem as if it were the plague.

You're right, taking away someone's right to protest is way more offensive.

Trump is succeeding in distracting from their attempt to destroy health care...and the Russia investigation.

So sick of this dumb theory. He spent an hour at that rally talking about 50 different subjects, including healthcare. It's society that decided to self-select the two minutes they care about.

The strategy is to go up on stage and fill time by talking about whatever comes to mind at that second and what he thinks will get the applause he desires. Everything else is people trying to attribute something that isn't there.

Oh I know but this is more than about NFL. I can see if there was 10% black players. Most of the NFL is black so if they really wanted to do something they can. I mean look at NBA took an owners team for saying racist shit in the privacy of his home. For such a tough sport they dont act tough in reality.

I think the African-American portion of the player base is clearly larger in the NBA than the NFL, and that's true for the audience as well. I expect the NBA to always be more progressive on issues affecting African-Americans than any other sports league by a wide margin.

This is about public optics and the irony of it. If Tomlin's goal was to keep this apolitical, who tried to do that with an act that is, at least, as offensive to the flag itself. I didn't make a comment to the players.

Lastly, Tomlin didn't take away anyone's right to protest. Villanueva went out there and me his own statement. The other players could have, too.

My comment isn't making reverence of Tomlin's actions; my point was to point out irony of trying to keep things apolitical.

To successfully distract you really ought to either be doing something really good and noble, or at least keeping eyes off of you. Those topics come back up and people will be even more against them due to being against Trump.

EDIT: Damn, the above is more succinct.

How many of these people who take offense to this also proudly wave another (dead) country's flag?

A flag of confederate traitors, mind you.

I think that Villanueva going out there changes things quite a bit. As soon as you have one person choosing to go, it implies that the remainder of the team is actively choosing not to. Before that it just seemed like it was a team decision and players were in the locker room whether they liked it or not.

He is half-Malaysian from a country which treats immigrants and refugees like shit, so I imagine he appreciates the message.

Oh don't get me wrong I'm not criticizing him for it. Nor saying he is doing it for the "likes". I apologize if I came off as dismissive of his act or unappreciative of it.

Are y'all looking at the Steelers not participating in the anthem as a good thing? I just assumed it was a decision from above in the organization to keep them from being able to protest.

Genuinely curious, what's the intent here?

Not even taking the field as an entire unit is like kneeling times a 1000.

Unfortunately, the first amendment only protects against Congress passing laws and not the head of the Executive Branch and his administration pressuring businesses to fire employees that peacefully protesting. It's insane where we are right now.

Seriously though, does no one else think this whole Trump thing has distracted from the actual message that Kaepernick was sending?

Kneeling no longer says anything about racism and police brutality. It's all about sending Trump a message. If Trump hadn't said people that kneeled were sons of bitches, everything would've stayed the same. Players would say they support Kaep and think he should be on a team, but they wouldn't actually do anything. Now kneeling is the cool thing to do because Trump's an asshole.

No it’s not. Watch Tomlin’s comments. They did not want to make a political statement either way and are avoiding the sitiuation all together to avoid players making a choice against each other. It was not meant as an act of defiance.
