Obama tried to give Zuckerberg a wake-up call over fake news on Facebook

Was Russian placed ads om Facebook this big a deal that people think they influenced the election?

Yes. Absolutely. Yes.

Why are we suddenly acting like controlling the flow of information isn't a powerful tool to influence public perception?

The self assuredness with which people here write "Zuckerberg is a shitty person" is hilarious. As if this character judgment is an unassailable fact, an assumption almost not worth stating in conversation because it's universally accepted common knowledge.

The audacity for him to lie about the fake news problem on Facebook during a one-on-one with the president is pretty amazing. Watching him get eviscerated in the political arena would almost be worth having to endure his 2020 run. Hopefully if he craters his stench will stick to other silicon valley sociopaths and keep them at bay.

Yeah, Zuckerberg can fuck right off.

Knew he was scum from how long Palmer Luckey managed to last at Facebook after getting his ass Exposed. I wouldn't be surprised one fucking bit if Zuckerberg was in on the take before the Oculus buyout and it influenced his decision to buy to donate to the Trump campaign by proxy.

If he were to end up winning I'd either die or literally leave the country. Hes a sociopath.
Zuckerberg is the one potential Democrat presidential candidate that would cause me to abstain from voting even if it meant another four years of Trump. That said, I believe in the Democrat base. As much as I wanted Bernie over Hillary she was still an understandable choice all things considered. I have faith that billionaire sociopaths don't have any openings to exploit with the Democratic base or party yet. Also, I guarantee Bernie would rise from the dead if it meant stopping a Zuckerberg candidacy with momentum and barring some crazy scandal Bernie would kill him in 2020.

I rather he run and get destoryed.

Dude has the charm of a soggy English muffins

You don't need charm, you just need to be a rich white guy who spreads lies, be racist and talk loudly like an complete idiot to be a successful presidential candidate.

Regardless of what people think about his ability to win the prospect of someone in control of a media platform that has the reach and level of influence as Facebook is fucking terrifying

Suppress all negative stories about himself. Or allow fake positive stories about him to get posted everywhere. Ramp up fake damaging stories about his opponents. He could easily do all of this.

He and his corrupt platform need to fuck off

Just read this. Can this douche please not run for president? Please?

I want him to run to see how quickly someone uses this in an attack ad

No easy way to fix it? Fuck off.

For some of them you could do it with a fucking IF statement! If the category is political, and it's targeting US voters during certain dates leading up to an election, and it's paid for in fucking Rubles....reject it!

Zuckerberg is the CEO of the most powerful information distribution company in the world. The idea of him running for office and being able to control what voters see on a day to day basis is scary. I wouldn't dismiss him out of hand.

I refuse to believe Facebook didn't know about this before the election. No way if you get $100,000+ in ad revenue do you not see how much is coming from Russian accounts targeted towards Americans, setting aside their content which was clearly pro-Trump.

Trump's election win will only empower foreign governments to attempt to influence any Western election from now on if things go unchecked.

Germany and France aren't letting these incidents slide. They've got healthy democracies lacking slave state enabling electoral colleges on top of higher voter participation. Germany is also building quite the cyber defenses iirc. Macron also dressed Putin down on television for the whole world to see in regards to Russian fake news propaganda and hacks. If anything Trump's win will just encourage foreign governments to meddle in US elections again since his administration has made no significant preparations for future attacks and sweeping electoral reform/voter registration will never happen under a Republican administration.

This is what I'm most afraid of about Trump.

Not what he'll do, but what he'll inspire with these braindead celebs/moghuls trying to copy him and run for president (e.g., Zuckerberg, Bloomberg, and, God forbid, Kanye West)

Obama's practically a scholar on Fake News, given how he's been on the receiving end of it pretty much the entire time he ran for and was in office.

This dude sucks. I can't wait to watch him spend a shitload of money on a political campaign that will inevitably fail because he can't speak in public for more than thirty seconds without looking like some kind of sweaty, dumbass alien from Planet Robotic Jerkoff

Donald Trump is president. Anything is possible.

Bloomberg actually had experience running NYC as Mayor for a few years. While he's done some not so great things, he's also done good things for the city.

What have you done for the world that can compare to the billions he has pledged to charity and research?

Nice.
When I'm a billionaire, I'll kill millions, then I'll just donate a few billion to orphaned children. All good breh.

He's an asshole and charisma-less but im curious to see these people dismissing his presidential chances when the guy can effectively push promotional posts about his campaign via Facebook, direct to an incredibly large audience, every day from now to 2020 if he wants.

Dismissing the power of Facebook advertising this way is the folly we are criticizing Zuckerberg for, no?

Yup, no easy way to fix it! I have no idea how these ads for my election showed up this election cycle. I wish there were a way to write a good algorithm to stop this, but I just can't help the billions in free advertising.

The problem of fake news being proliferated, and of Facebook targeted ads have a similar outcome but a pretty different cause. You're only describing the one that *is* easy to fix, but that doesn't seem to be what Obama was talking about.

Neither are easy to fix but neither are impossible to fix and it is telling the zuckerbergs first response / reaction (and second third and fourth) is that there either isn't a problem, or there isn't a solution.

In his mind Facebook is designed as well as it can be, and it should not be questioned.

He employed whole buildings of 1 dollar an hour labor to process flagged posts and check if they show a tit or a dick in them or not, but cared not about pictures of beheadings, racist memes, anti-semitism, private picture sharing groups, fake "news" that is presented the same way as respectable journalism, political ads from anyone with cash including foreigners, and undoubtably a ton more we have yet to find out.

Now he gets some heat from a toothless senate committee and suddenly Facebook is boasting about how easily they can write new code to fix just one area. Is that a change of heart, or he just got caught? How about forcing the oligarch that owns 10% of his stock to divest? How about admitting they have a lot to learn and FB needs a ton of work before it can be trusted?

I dunno where you're getting that from. Disagreeing with someone's criticism doesn't mean you're saying it "shouldn't be questioned", is it?

You just described a lot of totally different things that are totally different in nature to determine. A tit or a dick is unequivocal - it is, or it is not. And I don't know why you're saying they don't care about beheadings - they get taken down, just like tits and dicks do. Racist memes and private picture sharing groups are not at all as easy (especially if you're hiring someone for a dollar an hour). A group of people may well be able to agree if something's racist or get to the bottom of if a given picture has the subjects' consent to be shared (maybe), but it's obviously not unequivocal like dicks or tits, except in very extreme cases. And getting to the bottom of "fake news" is difficult, which is one of the major reasons it's so prolific. It's one thing to have no evidence for a claim, it's another to actually determine that it's therefore fake.

Isn't that what people were saying about Trump?
"I hope he wins the Republican primary and get destroyed in the election."

At least Trump has some talent and a clear connection to the base that determines who wins the republican nomination (the south, specifically). How does Zuckerberg win in the south? It's not going to happen.

The bigger fear is that Zuckerberg blows up Booker over the NJ school funding. Say what you will about Booker, I'm not a fan...but he's got a good shot at the nomination. Having him bloodied by a candidate with 0 chance (Zuckerberg) would be unfortunate.

I would throw an actual irl party if the government just shut down Facebook one day. It would actually be a great thing for the future of democracy and discourse.

And I don't think anyone under the age of 50 would give a shit at this point.
