Sonic Forces - Casino Forest gameplay

Was the first thing I noticed. Sonic Generations physics indeed

More like Lost World's Forest Level and Tropical Resort? Damn this looks like they really are reusing legacy assets

I thought they were recycling stuff from Lost World's forest zone as well.

Man, it would be really nice if they were to show just one unambiguously exciting thing about this game. I really like the concept, but the actual design is WILDLY unexciting.

The only good thing I've seen from the game is the theme song, and... well, it's a Sonic game. A good theme song is the absolute baseline.

Only on PC.

Ah, lame.

Just saw this. Initially started off as generic orchestrated stuff, but then quickly kicked into high gear. Definitely good shit here.

...which makes it all the weirder that the in-game music we've heard so far is so awful.

I love how your posts in Forces threads can be distilled down to "this looks shit, Mania is awesome"

Not that you're necessarily wrong, mind. You're probably right.

;)

I was actually pretty positive/optimistic about it back when it was called Project Sonic 2017 but I think it was the custom hero trailer that broke me

The cap on Sonic's running speed is so low. His speed crashes almost immediately after rolling down that massive slope at the end of the level. There are even times where he slows down while running down a slope, because the boost from a speed pad wore off. The obstacles don't feel like they lead into each other all that well, either. I wonder if I'd care less if they hadn't just released Mania, but it really feels like there's no flow to any of it.

Plus this level is probably shorter than any level in Mania past Green Hill Zone. I hope that's not the entirety of Classic Sonic's Casino Forest section.

I think someone can replay Mania 4 or 5 times and not get sick of the amazing level design and music.

I dont think ill replay Forces more than once. Just like for Unleashed and Sonic 06.

That lighting is absolute shite, you can barely make out the foreground. The music sucks as well.

I'm sorry, but can we just compare this to Tropical Resort from Sonic Colours? A 7 year old Wii game is visually far more impressive.

This is funny and sad at the same time, I hope reviews will drop before the release because I'm not sure I want to keep my pre-order.
And to think the thing that hyped me is Shadow DLC with remixed SA2 music.

Sigh...what happened? I thought the Classic Stages wouldn't feel like such an afterthought. But if it's really Force's 'Werehog', I don't mind much, at all really. It looks fun, it's based on something people love (though done not-as-well) and some specific levels could be designed well. Sucks Classic is put in the game for padding, but it would be less 'problematic' if Mania didn't just release.

Regarding the gameplay footage itself, well...a few thoughts.

Firstly, it looks really poorly thought out. A casino built in a forest sounds fun, but what's really going on is taking the Lost World's Casino and Silent Forest Zone assets and re-using them in a more realistic art-style. I mean...it looks FINE, surely. But by far one of the weakest looking zones in the entire game thus far visually.

Music is at least on-point, with it not being horrible like Classic's Green Hill (how did they f*** up such an iconic track...remix Toot Toot Sonic Warrior-like in the Game Gear games :l). It seems to have fun gimmicks but there doesn't appear to be much level depth. I noticed a lower path but they didn't bother showing that off.

Classic is a very 'odd' style in Forces but at the very least, it looks 'fun'. But I'm excited about Avatar and Modern's take on the level. Maybe those acts will fully utilize this zone's concept.

man what is going on with the music on classic sonic stages

I forgot about this shit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1wYD5b4VUw&t=1s

The music in general has been a bit mixed, dare I say. I'm not gonna sit here and criticise the butt rock and Infinite's theme because I love how cheesy it is. But then you've got some tracks that sound like they were made following a "how to make dubstep" tutorial on Youtube like the music in the pyramid stage, and the Sonic 4-esque Classic Sonic themes. Some really strong stuff too, but it feels like more of a mixed bag than usual.

Yeesh. Looks... bad.

Say whatever you want about not needing Classic Sonic because it's redundant after Mania, but some actual well-designed classic stages would've done wonders for this game. Looking at something like Studiopolis and then... this... it's jarring to say the least.

I want this game to be good. But that was so bland and poorly designed. And as others have said, the lighting is awful. Where are the vibrant colours? The game looks more "alive" in screens than it does in motion, which is just not good at all. I know some have complained about the longer Mania zones, but at least those were unpredictable and fun. This is a minute and a half of wet fart zone.

Sonic Colors is worlds above this Casino Forest trash. After seeing the final Mania stage I thought it could never be topped in terms of awfulness but apparently I was wrong! Sonic Team proper has outdone the Mania devs in that area.

Oh I actually haven't seen this.

It's... not Sonic. At all. I mean it's perfectly passable, sure, but it sounds more like the score to an anime TV movie than anything to do with Sonic the Hedgehog.

I didn't even like Lost World but that game had the string quartet thing going on too without diving head first into anime territory. That game's final boss theme was straight 🔥.

Kinda funny when you think about it. Sonic Team seemed to make lots of people happy by finally getting 3D Sonic right for arguably the first time ever with Generations, and they go ahead and drop the ball on the next game pretty much immediately.

I mean, it's sad. But also funny.

Man, this does not hold up favourably to Mania at all. The level design is so bland and boring. That music is awful. What is going on at Sonic Team?

They really should have picked a better stretch of gameplay to show. it's like they threw a few segments of Casino Night together and called it an evening. Not an interesting gimmick to speak of.

I don't think the music is bad at all.
That said, Genesis soundfonts don't give me life like they did in my bedroom musician days.

Awful sound, vomitous visual work, laughable level design.
Just give all your money to Mania team.

Titanic Monarch makes this look like amateur hour. Well, it does that by itself. But TMZ has actual enemies and platforming... and awesome music.

Sonic is not loved by everyone and its game design for a platformer is fairly divisive?
Doesn’t excuse the dumb comment.

On topic: stage looks super dull, classic Sonic stages in Generations were cool even with the shitty physics

I'm a bit impressed with the music. The tune itself isn't too great but I love how the drum sounds feel just like Genesis.

That being said, the physics still look wrong.

Is Sonic Team purposefully making classic Sonic NOT play like classic Sonic or are they unable to? I'm not sure which would be more infuriating.

Seriously, he should control EXACTLY as he does in Mania.

The crazy thing is they fucked it up immediately after with Lost World which most people thought was ok at best and the most common consensus was to go back to Generations.

Which they did, except they also made it way worse for some reason.

Titanic Monarch isn't even bad. It's just kind of...overdone?

I'll take "too much of a good thing" over "too little of everything."

I wonder if this is a mission level based around collecting a certain number of rings? It would certainly explain the lack of enemies.

In any case, I think we've all figured out by now that Sonic Team simply has no interest in making Classic Sonic levels anything more than "passable". They literally had a guy who knows the classic games inside and out working for them and they still couldn't be bothered to make the physics in Forces better than Generations. I'm more interested in how this is going to look as a Modern Sonic level.

Ehhh I'm not really feeling Classic Sonic's gameplay in this video. The level seems empty and just not fun, so hopefully they make it more lively. The music is good though. The main thing that bothers me is Classic Sonic. I love Mania, because they got Sonic to play right, and it will be hard to go back to the way Classic Sonic plays in this if he controls like in Generations. So far I'm not sure if I will be there on day one as I'm only interested in Modern Sonic sections, as well as Episode Shadow, and I'm not sold yet on the Avatar sections.

Looks and sounds like it dropped out of Sonic 4 Ep. 2, but with even worse level design.

And Sega, it isn't a new zone if you're just reskinning an old one.

I love how people are super ready to shit on this game, but flip their shit if someone didn't like Sonic mania.

Anyways, this level looks too dark (as in literally dark) for a Casino themed level full of neon lights.

You know you really got that Sonic design down when you have to put multiple speedboosters on downhill slopes to make Sonic go fast.

zxIU3if.gif

(text added by me)

Sonic goes down a hill and hits a speedbooster. He hits a steeper downward slope and SLOWS DOWN. Then he falls off a ledge and hits TWO MORE speedboosters on a downward slope and gets hardly any height off the ramp it leads to. Generations didn't do this kind of shit. How is this game worse than Generations?

Visually the level needs more lighting but is an okay concept.

Music: as awful as this game's Green Hill. Seems like they're going to overuse that synthetic drum in every Classic Sonic track because they think that's what the Genesis games sounded like just like with Sonic 4.

I noticed it in the 3d gameplay, but wtf is with all the coins in this game? If chao were in, that would be paradise.

Also, lol at the responses to someone not liking mania. I need a bingo sheet for Forces threads at this point, and at least 5 boxes would have to with mania.

Well remember these are only snippets of larger themes you're hearing. It seems like they're also leaning with the orchestral characteristics of Sonic 06, which I have no issue with considering it's one of last gen's greatest scores and one of the franchise best.

It does seem at odds however with pop-py cheesy rock, and abysmal Classic themes however.
