Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

Someone who works at Sucker Punch who's here on GAF or knows people at Sucker Punch, please tell me they aren't closing their studio. Can't take in the news of another talented passionate studio go down like this.

Edit - lol

If it were up to the internet, I'd have panicked in 2014 after the layoffs at Santa Monica. Instead, they moved to a brand new studio, we found out the layoffs were due to a cancelled game behind the scenes (which, while it sucks, is something that happens more than people think), and the next year we got a great God of War reveal.
Yep, basically, shit happens. Can this turn out bad? Yes. Can it turn out good despite the issues? Yes.

There isn't really anything to worry about under those circumstances. What happens will happen and things will continue going forward.

If y'all wanna panic about something panic about the fact it's been 2 almost 3 years since that ape escape team photo and not a new ape escape title in sight not even 3 for os2 classic

Oh it was pretty dark times at SSM during 2014 layoff. Someone I know said it was just scary/dark not sure of where they are headed towards.

There will be a dancing thing for phones from forwardworks in jp.

Sorry.

Edit: nvm I think that's the Parappa game. I think I've seen something Ape Escape on phones though?

I wouldn't be too concerned. When coming up with a new IP, I'm sure all studios go through rough patches over the dev lifecycle... and considering the fact that it's rumoured to be a new open world IP, the silence isn't that surprising.

With that being said, as much as I love SP games I don't see the rush. Sony has so many releases in the pipeline over the next two years, this could potentially be in the oven until 2020.

I am a bit concern because their new ip is rumor to be a open world western game. Sony may see it redundant with red dead 2 coming out and axe the studio like they how they canned Stig project at Santa Monica.

If it is, I feel they'll still be fine. Releasing a Sphagetti Western (a genre that is not oversaturated at all), 1-2 years after RDR2 should not be a cause for concern.

An RDR2 clone would sell by the boatload.

If that were to happen, they could always go back to inFamous. With the way they left things in SS, next game could be huge.

Honestly, Sony is probably holding back another Horizon-like bombshell reveal. Once GOW, Detroit and maybe Spider-Man are out before E3. We are most likely going to get the next lineup of upcoming 1st party games.

That Sony Japan rpg is coming anyday now as well as suikoden Vi
Man, looking back I'm embarrassed for having bought into a lot of that stuff. Dude was a master bullshitter.

I guess since it was still early in the generation with so many games and devs unaccounted for, a lot of us on here just really WANTED to believe in all the stuff he said. But in hindsight, we all should have known better. Even if he did have legit connections nobody could have known the shear amount from across the entire industrycthat he claimed to.

This was basically my takeaway from their E3 press conference this year. They showed all their cards last year and didn't have anything else very far in development to show. Look at all of their big reveals the last few years. Horizon: Zero Dawn had a demo. God of War had a demo. Days Gone had a demo (and trailer). The Last Guardian had a demo. The only exception has been Naughty Dog (I'm not including FFVII Remake and Shenmue 3 in that as they're not Sony properties).

Significance of conferences going forward:

1. PSX - Should become the de facto conference. Speak to those that got your there and will continually back you up. Make it something special for the community with panels, games, and interaction between gamers and game creators.

2. E3 - The conference for the masses and for new comers. Satisfy the sites and blogs with a mainstream focus with some heavy hitters but save the announcements close to the hearts of PS gamers for PSX.

At best, it seems they may be able to pump out two titles. I think trilogies in the same generation are over with. Especially in terms of retaining/exceeding quality and the audience willing to stay in that long.

Yeah, the production values required from AAA games has skyrocketed over the last 7-8 years that the days of studios pumping out a full sequel in a year or two are long gone. Not to mention the heavy emphasis on post release support these days, from patches to DLC and even standalone expansions like Infamous FL and Uncharted TLL.

I'd be surprised if Konami weren't the problem with that.

there is nothing true on that rumor, and people should stop spreading it

I don't know why YOU bought it? But I bought it because he predicted an exclusive SFV and a next-gen FF7. I don't care whether people think he's a fraud but it makes my blood boil when folks pretend like those were both "obvious". We spent years saying S-E would NEVER do FF7 as a remake, then after it happens suddenly it's "so obvious" ? Fuck no.

I wanna make a Suikoden joke to tie back into the guy BSing, but it hurts too much. Plus someone confirmed there WAS a Suikoden in the works, it just got canceled. :(

Edit: There WAS no rumor on Sucker Punch making a Western game lol. Just concept art. Only thing we heard was that it was called Sentinel but you shouldn't trust that either.

So, the supposed new IP of From Software wasn't revealed at TGS right?

PSX then...

A new From exclusive - if it's happening - will get the hardcore riled up like few others. Probably be an E3 megaton. PSX mostly seems to be smaller crowd-pleasing stuff or more info on games that have already been revealed.

Our tag line should be panic to be honest

Just Panic

My biggest complaint about this generation is the ballooning development times and how it affects new IP.

Last generation, a two year development cycle was pretty much the standard, especially once you got an IP up and running. In the PS2 era, some studios could churn out a quality product every year, like Insomniac did with Ratchet & Clank.

This generation, everything's been all over the place. Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch got things going relatively quickly, but relied on old IP to do so. Santa Monica floundered with their new IP and still haven't released a game. Horizon took 5-6 years to bake - and it was phenomenal - but I was hoping that lengthy of a dev cycle was an anomaly. Seems like that's gonna be the new standard though.

After Infamous, I really thought we wouldn't have to wait this long for a follow up. I thought there was a 99% chance we'd see something last E3, and was hoping for a Q1 2017 release.

Really makes you wonder about consoles' life cycles. You used to be able to easily get a trilogy in during a console's life. Now, you may be lucky to get a single sequel. All we've really got so far was Knack II. The Order probably would have been possible by now as well had it gone over better.

When I look back at consoles past, I immediately think of my favorite trilogies: Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Resistance, Sly... Will we be able to do that when this generation is over, or are we just gonna have a list of one hit wonders?

That's really the main reason I'm in no rush to see a PS5.

For a big ambitious new AAA IP 5+ years is going to be the standard with most games from now on. Heck, even The Order 1886 was bordering on 5 years, if memory serves, and I doubt SP's game will be a highly filmic 5 hour campaign.

Dreams is going to be so good. I have a lot of faith that they're creating amazing tools but the tricky part is making it easy to use and palatable for the general populace.

Not really 1st party but I feel like a Crash Team Racing remake reveal is a guarantee at PSX (with a slight chance of it being at PGW instead). I'm gonna guess it'll launch for $20 digitally in April with a retail release with it and the N'sane trilogy the same day at $40. It'll be exclusive at launch but will release on Xbox One and Switch in fall 2018. Less likely but I think a completely new Crash platformer will be announced at PSX as well. It'll release in the first half of 2019 but release on PS4, Xbox One and Switch at the same time.

I'll be there day zero for a CTR remake. Still my favourite karting game ever (and I played MK8 recently which is excellent but CTR is still king), and I just hope they keep the handling intact.

True. I'll agree that it will probably will be the most original/unique/innovative new IP this generation but whether or not Dreams turns out to be a good game remains to be seen.

Mm are 3 for 3 so far. They deserve the benefit of the doubt, and given how long they're being allowed to work on this (LBP2 was early 2011) Sony obviously has faith in them.

Sucker Punch still radio silent. I think it's safe to assume that whatever they were working on got cancelled or got a major overhaul. It's been too long for a studio that was very competent in almost every department, not a trailer, teaser, a leak, nothing.

That's a pretty big jump considering they released 2 games in 2014, little over 3 years ago. Assuming they went straight into working on something new they could conceivably be only 18-24 months into a new project by now (ignoring all of that Glassdoors stuff on the last page).

For anyone who likes Playdead's games, I absolutely have to recommend Little Nightmares which scratched a very similar itch to Limbo and Inside. It's a fantastic game and if you haven't played it, might help towards filling the long wait for Playdead's next project.

Yeah, I need to play Little Nightmares but it's going to have to wait for a sale & for me to tackle some of my backlog.

If GG didn't release KZSF, you would be saying the same thing about them?

Yes, KZSF was a rushed ps4 launchtitle.
Just give them time, a new IP is always very difficult to develop and after the big success of TLOU, Horizon and Until Dawn, Sucker Punch's wants to deliver a very good and an unforgetable game. I'm sure they're not big as Santa Monica or ND is, they could do the same way as Bend Studio is doing.
A small team with a longer dev cycle to ensure quality.

Still not expecting to see SP's new open world IP revealed until E3 2018.

So is Forwardworks connected to Playstation at all or is it a seperate entity within Sony? I see that mobile space fishing game will be coming out on PC as well but none of the consoles.

I am really curious about Sucker Punch's new IP.

We know it is Open World and Action. And that it has amazing graphics. But nothing about what it is and how it plays.

This kind of stuff is so exciting. I am hoping we got a Horizon-like reveal for their new IP. It will be even more surprising since for Horizon we had some leaked concept arts but SP new IP... nothing!

Whatever it is I hope they find the same sucess Guerrila found.

It's PlayStation's Japanese mobile gaming division. When they say PC support, think more along the lines of a browser game, not Steam. I'm not even sure they're interested in localising their games, since we still haven't heard anything about Everybody's Golf yet.

I hope we get no leaks and it's a wild concept like Horizon.

Think of ForwardWorks kinda like Sony Online Entertainment... that is more likely to stay than being sold off.

It is a PlayStation-owned and managed entity that works on mobile games, with access to internal Japan Studio talent and PlayStation IP.

But so far, it is not connected within the conventional elements of PlayStation business that we know of.

ForwardWorks handles all its own marketing, communication, etc, with practically no marketing support of the broader PlayStation family. At the same token though, they're self-managing without any of the liabilities and expectations to support the broader PlayStation family.

So, afawk, there are no commitment from FW to support the global market until they themselves deem it necessary/worth it, even as PlayStation now is a global brand where every first-party game is localised. And there is no commitment to support any form of PlayStation console too, even when there is a PC-version being made for SoraUmi.

Why is FW likely to succeed with SOE failed?

FW's board is chaired by the presidents of SIE.

It's clear that Sony/PlayStation wants the mobile money that FGO is making hand-over-fist, but they're now gun-shy about being "ONE SONY" when it comes to integrating PlayStation and Mobile Games, because previous mobile endeavours by Sony can be said to have failed because they brought in their console mindset to mobile gaming mindset ( exclusive hardware, expensive games, etc )

So instead of finding a middle ground like what Nintendo is doing with their mobile business ( mobile games that appear on iOS/Android, but still marketed and treated as part of the Nintendo family with the localisation and support from Nintendo ), they go all the way to the other end of the spectrum in that ForwardWorks barely feel like a PlayStation company at all, if not for the fact they make games based off Sony IP.

Ahh I see, TIL. If its going to be browser based maybe they're going to translate it so ppl can still play it in the West without having to publish it in the West, like Granblue.

I’m really curious to see more trailers/gameplay of Days Gone, I hope Bend knocks it out of the fucking park because I love seeing new IPs on console this gen do well critically like Horizon.

Shit... those Glassdoors reviews... That would explain why they have so many openings lately. They are bleeding talents. Unless the current leads are replaced... it seems like they will continue bleeding talents. :(

I'm not sure why Sony is giving MM such a loose leash with Dreams.

Because they are a small studio for today's standards that made a huge hit for them, and that has important role in PlayStation when it comes to tech experiments and solutions. I mean, they have Anton Mikhailov, co-creator of PS Move and PSVR, working at Media Molecule these days on Dreams tools creations and atunement. Thats how much prestige they have

And of course, the money. Even without releasing a big project for some time, year after year they have still been profitable

Having a leash on a game about creation is how you end up with Project Spark. In terms of creation there is no studio like MM and that is why Sony allows them to fully embrace their creativity.

I also get the feeling that the engine MM is using/making is going to be something they use for quite some time.

If Dreams hits its full potential it could be Sony's equivalent to Minecraft. It's no surprise they're being allowed years to work on it. I think Sony will want them to get the UI as perfect as possible.
